  1. If by 'control the spread' people mean 'fell every ash tree within X distance of the infected trees' there is a strong chance that we will wipe out genetically determined resistance. Research in Denmark has shown that this exists at a small (and randomly distributed) level throughout the population. The last thing we want to do is fell and burn the DNA of our future ash trees! If the fungus can spread across the channel to Kent, Essex and Suffolk and has already been confirmed at several locations from Kent to Scotland, it is almost certainly very widespread indeed throughout the country, and probably on at least its second generation of infection. Presence of natural genetic resistance in Fraxinus excelsior (Oleraceae) to Chalara fraxinea (Ascomycota): an emerging infectious disease
  2. Intervals are by far the best way to get your run times down. Try running like this: 4 min 30 - normal jog/medium run 30 seconds - sprint like hell Repeat Do this for 20 minutes at a time to begin with (too long and you run a serious risk of shin splints/plantar fasciitis/ileotibial band problems) and work up over about 8 weeks to doing it 3 times a week for an hour. The minutes will iterally drop off your 1.5 mile times.
  3. My wife broke her toe two weeks ago - nothing as dramatic as a collapsed jockey wheel, she kicked the bed I've broken most of my toes - the best one was when I was about 14, putting up my foot to stop a roller that was rolling off a transport box on the back of a tractor. Reflex reaction with predictable results... Hope you mend quickly.
  4. It's a testament to just how good this site is - I Googled the ash sawfly and the best result was Arbtalk!
  5. Thanks, that sounds quite feasible if I can work out a way of getting there. Obviously some sort of donation to your favourite charity would be offered I've only ever been on weekdays in the past, so can't comment on the Sayurday thing.
  6. I might try to get to that. Got to be worth a sickie

I was on a rest day watching Neighbours. Can't believe I was watching that crap.

    BBQ fuel??

Woodsmoke is full of carcinogens....but then loads of people use wood for barbecues on a regular basis and live to perfectly decent ages. Unless you cook every single meal that way I somehoe doubt you'll run into problems.
  9. Here's the entry in the parish register for my 7 x great grandmother's burial, on the 2nd May 1792. She's the top one.
  10. A public footpath (i.e. a public right of way) is a highway maintainable at public expense. Armed with this information try telling the highways dept that there is a danger to the public. A tree is a tree is a tree - how it got in the ground doesn't matter.
  11. 1. Is there any specific relevance to your statement that there are lots of self seeded trees? Trees grow, mature and produce seeds - some of which then grow into trees. That's how woodlands work. 2. You could contact the Land Registry to try to trace ownership - if the land has been registered (e.g. if it has changed hands since compulsory registration began in your area), they will be able to help. Get the local authority to confirm whether or not it is theirs as well. It may well have been the subject of a Compulsory Purchase Order if sub-standard housing has been demolished in the past. 3. You don't a right to work on a dangerous tree on neighbouring property, but you may be able to rely on the fact that you were protecting your own property as a defence. It sounds like the same thing, but there are subtle differences. If it overhangs yours, you may cut back to the boundary line though. 4. There is no duty as such to have the trees made safe, but every land owner has a duty of care to his neighbours.
  12. Is that an annual thing or just this year? Was looking at some very mildewy sycamores on Saturday.
  13. Maybe - I was going to go (missed the last one), then a change in circumstances came along and I wasn't going to make it. Which way are you thinking of going? M23/M25?
  14. http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/tree-health-care/17559-brownheaded-ash-sawfly.html maybe?
  15. It must have been - the death penalty in all forms has been revoked from civillian law in the this country. Even 'arson in a Naval dockyard', which catches people out sometimes.
  16. I came in from work one day to find that my ex had spent the day cutting the heads of old girlfriends in photos. It's a good job I didn't keep pet rabbits, that's all I can say.
  17. Good old Mr Dowson! I do indeed have the app, and nothing makes a day more interesting than trying not to get caught!
  18. Thank you, I suspect I will need it!
  19. Nice one! I start the Level 6 next month.
  20. I put something on my work Facebook page suggesting an apparent increase in Erysiphe alphitoides 4 or 5 weeks ago. The summer created ideal conditions for it, so it's probably not surprising. What is fairly apparent to me is that in general, it is far less abundant (and possibly less frequent as well) down here in Kent than it was when I was working in the scenic, yet slightly damp, Forest of Bowland.
  21. Sadly not. Did you know that James Toseland got married (to Katie Melua) at Kew on Saturday?
  22. If you have Raynaud's disease your fingers will look like this - it's brought on by cold and/or stress, not vibration:
  23. Great pics - I love the old stuff. My evil ex-wife binned all of my old work photos, probably close to about 500 of the blighters. Needless to say, I was fuming. Her reason? I wasn't looking after them. They were in a box in the bottom of my wardrobe. Short of cuddling them on a regular basis, I was never really sure how I was meant to look after them better.
  24. Windmills or kettlebells in general? Yes, they'll mess you up if you do the exercises badly but if you do them properly your back will be fine. It's all about where you bend it, which can take practise to get right.
  25. I was with a guy on Sunday who does windmills with a 62kg kettlebell. Farkinell!
