  1. I used to wear contact lenses most days, and one day I had some dust scratch my eye. Unfortunately, the cut got infected, and it got very bad. Had to go on several drops and antibiotics for a few days, couldn't tolerate any sort of light, spent several days sleeping/sitting in a dark room. That was 3 years ago. Had my eyes checked recently by the optician for a routine check up, he couldn't believe how scarred my eyes are from general abuse. He stopped making notes on where they were and started drawing them on a diagram instead. The worst scar, from the aforementioned event, is so close to the centre of my eye, he said I was lucky not to be blind. The scars on my eyes mean that I am no longer a candidate for laser eye surgery (until new methods are developed) as there is a small chance that the scar tissue would cause the lens flap to stick (the flap that they cut and lift before lasering) I try to avoid wearing contacts now unless its raining, has helped with a lot of issues. Also if you do get in your eye, be VERY careful when trying to get it out. Don't stab at your eye with tissue paper or something. Sometimes it is clear, and you are just feeling the scratch, and you are simply further aggravating it!
  2. I watched this the other day with the gf, really awesome movie. They set the scene with some training clips, give you some background info on the characters, and get straight into it. Loads of action, plenty of gore, really incredible human perseverance and stuff. The ending is pretty sad though! I have to admit that it was tricky to hold back a couple of tears!
  3. Found this thread while searching through some old Isle of Wight threads. I took some pictures of this tree last year. Hopefully some of the users who posted can finally enjoy them!
  4. With further investigation, I have found out that they are a wing of Find a Tradesman, Trusted Local Tradesmen & Builders, Home Improvement & Renovation Specialists | ServiceMagic and HomeAdvisor.com | Get Matched to Top-Rated Remodelers, Plumbers and More some sort of directory website. HomeAdvisor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia They seem massive, but quite a lot of controversy seems to surround the services they provide: Service Magic Complaints and Reviews @ Pissed Consumer And a bit more detailed info here: http://www.contractortalk.com/f100/protect-your-company-online-servicemagic-will-undercut-your-google-rank-31749/
  5. Hey guys, I've been working on my on-line advertising for a couple of weeks now, and there is a site above me on google that's giving me some grief. Tree Stump Removal Isle Of Wight - Compare Quotes Now, at first glance, it seems like a good website, but it seems to be an automatically generated template full of key words. The 'Isle of Wight part is interchangeable for any location. For example: Trusted Tree Surgeons Manchester - Compare Free Quotes or even Trusted Tree Surgeons England - Compare Free Quotes They have an 'online quote form' for any job, yet they disassociate themselves in other areas, saying that they are just a directory. Some of the pages carry the ISA logo, but there is no other mention of the ISA. But it doesn't stop there! Swap tree surgeons for something else, and its evident that this site is some sort of plague. Trusted Services East Ayrshire - Home Improvement Quotes Unfortunately, they dont respond to emails, and I have tried to google an answer, but the results only show yet more variations of their site. If it seemed to be a legitimate service, I wouldnt mind them beating me on google search results, but they just seem to be spamming the web! Has anybody else got any insight as to who or what this is, and anything that can be done? Is it worth reporting them to google? My main issue is that my potential clients are going to be tricked by this website (which seems legitimate at first), and will submit a query... who knows what direction they are going to be pointed in!
  6. I always switch out from the winch to the bollard if we are lowering for a while and dont need to lift. I like to think that there is less wear on the winch drum that way! I'm surprised to hear that everybody doesn't do it!
  7. I must admit, I have my doubts that Mr Blackman will be returning to this thread! That's a lot of criticism for anybody to take on board, even if they are right! It's just a shame that so many 'tree surgeons' don't know the difference between a round-shape lopping session and a reduction, there are plenty more out there, and clients don't know any different!

  12. Hey guys! I just made a FB page for my new side-line in grinding. I've been reading about web SEO (search engine optimisation), and having a facebook page which links to your website helps the search engines create links, increasing your potential ranking. Anyway, if you'd be willing to like my page, I'll go ahead and like all of yours! https://www.facebook.com/wissonstumpremoval Thanks!
  13. I cant imagine the tree being 30m with that DBH (based on the perspective in the photo), so my guess is cherry. Interesting to see how even the split of guesses is!
  14. if you are desperate, quote your tree work lower and price your landscaping work a bit higher. If you continue to get landscaping work, you'll make more; if you get more tree work from competetive pricing, once the ball is rolling you can raise the prices again and rely on word of mouth. The more hedges you do, the more hedges you get. The more trees you do, the more trees you get. People will usually recommend you to their friends for the job you did for them!
  15. Some really great ideas coming through, thanks everybody so far for taking the time to look and speculate. I will be making a note on all these suggestions and make an attempt to amend them! Please keep the comments rolling, its very useful to the development of this tool, which has potential to go places in the future! Don't forget, it's a work in progress!
  16. Thanks all for the feedback so far. If anybody else has observations or ideas to throw in, that would be really great!
  17. Please note that pictures are not yet added, feedback required for the existing content
  18. Thank you everybody for your feedback so far. As the project has moved onto a new stage, I have created a new thread. At the moment, people are getting a bit confused, thinking that it is still a book! Please check out http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/training-education/66694-feedback-required-please.html#post1014055 for the latest. Cheers
  19. I am in the final year of my FDSc in arb, and am currently in the process of completing a "specialist project" module. For my project, I have decided to develop a database of tree information, to gather all of the information available on each tree species, particularly the hard-to-find stuff, in one place. For more background information, have a quick scan through this thread, which features some early samples and ideas: http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/59301-new-product-idea-book-feedback-please.html Today I present to you, the first working web-page sample, presenting a large quantity of information on Sorbus torminalis, commonly known as the Wild Service tree. I chose this species as it is an important native species to the UK, but is not necessarily well known by professionals in the industry. Tree Wiki If you could have a look at this page, and provide me with some feedback, that would be extremely useful for the development of this new tool. Comments on the layout, distribution of categories, format of information and so on would be very useful to me. Please keep in mind that the information is not yet properly referenced, and images have not been properly inserted/enabled, as this is a feature still in development. This is just a prototype, and a long way from the finished product! Any alterations or additions to the content of the page are also welcome. I have designed this tool to help everybody in our industry, as well as related industries; even curious homeowners. Some information is very difficult to find, and the ultimate aim is to make a huge amount of species-specific information available to everybody; on pcs, laptops, tablets and smart phones. Users will also be able to add and edit information, providing that information is supported with linked referencing materials. Thank you for your help, I look forward to hearing back from you all soon!
  20. I think one of the problem is that people rely on sitting at home, applying for advertised vacancies, and waiting for a call. If you want to work, you have to make the effort to find it. Write to enough people, go into shops, factories, workshops, sell yourself, offer trial days. If you are hard working, reliable and sensible, you're already in the top 25%, and you should be an asset to somebody. There will always be work if you spend your time actively trying to find it.
  21. My guess is 57m!
  22. I originally wanted an extra-cab l200, but settled for a single cab when the opportunity arose to get one at a good price. I bolted a sentribox x515 to the bed by the cab, which holds several saws/climbing kits, and has more than enough space for all my kit. I wouldn't want to keep saws and kit in the cab as it would always smell of petrol (not nice for the missus!) Sentribox - Lead others follow The Official Website The Professionals Choice Even with the tool box, the bed space is great, I cant imagine having a double cab. I saw a double cab navara on the road the other day with a 20ft ladder in the bed, tied to the ladder rack, was sticking 12ft in the air over the bonnet! Looked terrible! If capacity is important, single cab. If you are not regularly moving chip/logs, and need the truck for domestic use as well, I'd consider a double cab (only 1 passenger feels very restrictive sometimes!) Extra cabs are a pain to find, I wanted an extra cab ranger because of the half-door at the back, but they seem to be super rare!
  23. Even manually pushed grinders are heavy, and pulling them up slopes is a pain. also pulling them back over sawdust and generally manoeuvring can be difficult. They are often advertised as being lighter, but even 2 men can struggle to lift most of them. The self-propelled machines can climb slopes, track themselves up trailer ramps, and crawl over dust piles with ease. Considerably heavier, but arguably less effort and more capability.
  24. You timed this perfectly, I am in the market for new boots. I'm going to give the forests a try. Roughly when in December are you expecting them to arrive?
  25. Depending on the length of the rope, I can imagine you'd loose some pull taking the elasticity out of the rope. This is a great idea that I had never thought of though, saves getting the ladder out if its a simple throw!
