  1. Cordwood just means uncut length of tree trunk say 2.5m long. Usually bought at roadside (where the trees were originally felled) by the artic truck loads (say aprox 30cm3 etc). If you heat you whole house on wood, so get through alot its worth considering. Make sure you have an entrance big enough or large/ space for the truck too unload. Check out Woodnet. WoodLots
  2. Cheapest local sellers are Tree surgeon selling mixed hardwood for £60 a 1m3. Another place is doing 1m3 soft & 1m3 hard for £115 including delivery. So im not sure what profit margin they are making... There are also some brand new wood selling ventures that have just appeared locally in the last few yrs who buy in artic loads & are selling it alot more expensive than the above. Energy Cost Comparison | Nottingham Energy Partnership According to theese figures wood is the cheapest form of heating, if you don't live on mains gas, apart from getting heat pumps put in. Bet my old rayburn isn't anywhere near 85% efficient though
  3. I have tarps over top of my pallet wood stores with the sides open. Trouble is rain goes sideways so you need a large overhang to keep it off & the tarp stops sun. Ideal would be a polytunnel (they seem cheaper than building a shed) or a cheaper idea was buying some clear tarps.
  4. I have a damson (technically a bullace I think but i call them damsons) tree in my garden, that is very productive its a massive old tree of the local native variety, probaly over 50yrs old. Make alot of damson jam & damson jelly. Also damsons (plus sugar) are nice, cooked from the deep freeze served with yoghurt or ice cream. Noticed once that the local Waitrose were selling punes of damsons at £8 a kg. You will have to compete against prince charles duchy brand: Waitrose Duchy Organic preserve damson - Waitrose
  5. Eucalyptus! Nah proably a forest big enough that it could have everything in different parts Would like it to have alot of forest rides with avenues of trees either sides. Maybe a massive circle of oak trees witha "secret glade" in the middle. Would also have bluebells wild garlic etc & a river with reintroduced beavers living in it. Mix in alot of edible species like damson crab apple, apples etc Maybe have natives in one area transition in into a more manged area with exotic species.
  6. Buy a cheapo ebay moisture meter if you don't already have one so you can test when it goes under 20%. Seasoning time there are alot of variables like log size wood store localtion/design etc but 1 yr sounds about right.
  7. Gutted Iv'e just being planting a load of oaks I grew from seed. I still have a load left in pots i need to find a home for.

  9. Didn't someone on here already install log gas boiler hoping to get the RHI commercial rate for two dwellings? Seems unfair on people who have invested alot of money in it on the belief RHI covered there choice of heating.
  10. Can you not bag it up & get people to buy it for animal bedding or garden mulch etc. Place locally sells it for 40 quid a builders bag which works out more than B&Q bark
  11. I didn't know they even did brushcutter qualifications

  16. Rather than using bottled gas hob in kitchen thinking of making an outdoor stove to cook soups/stews etc on (grow alot of veg so i make alot of soups etc) Don't like open fires as smoke is unhealthy, & its very unefficent cooking method Looking for a proven & easy design to copy out of firebricks etc. Alot on the net about rockets stoves but step by step construction info is sketchy.

  23. I bought a a second hand one & its still going strong but I had to buy a new oil pump though when it stopped oiling. Local highstreet shop wanted to charge me £45 quid for it! But found it on ebay in the USA alot cheaper... 021245007 oil pump makita dcs4610,dcs400,dcs401,dcs34,dcs340,uc3500,uc4000 | eBay Shares alot of parts with dolmar saws as its the same company.
