I don't think I got much better than 35m3 in .3m3 clearfell over that sort of distance, 8 chokers add igland dd on a County with bomford blade, 7.5 m sawlogs to 20cm top and about 5 tonne stacked by hand (not by me). I'm sure I could have got treble that with the same county and grapple loader 10 years later. By the time I packed up I was moving 58m3 over 1km of 2.4 pulp, just about competitive with a purpose built over that distance but they kept tracking the same ruts, I used the whole ride but couldn't travel in the forwarder ruts.

Rod beat me to it, it's about controlling the relative humidity, if it's hot then you need to maintain a higher RH under the damp proof membrane but you will still need controlled airflow. It's not the heat that causes the cracking it's the amount of moisture getting from the log to the air. Also the cut of the timber will make a big difference, boxed heart will always have more problems that something sawn down the pith as it cannot releave itself by cupping.

My letter from them says it's been reduced to £74.30! Why such variation? Any cheaper places in Surrey? autogas only costs 5p more a litre.

How can that be classed as waste ? A lot of this was done post 87 storm, I often wonder what the ground looks like now. Technically it's unlicensed waste land filling.

I expect it was a local debate on whether to institute a dog control order. A couple of points I was expecting to be picked up on: why not allow only truly compostable bags be sold for dog droppings? as this is essentially a health issue, notwithstanding the aesthetics, and the principle worry is toxicara canis, which takes 28 days to incubate in the pile, why not incorporate a weak biocide in the bag material?

Woodguy posted realistic figures. Wood dimensions don't change much until it dries below the point where there is no free water in the pores or cells, this is about 25% mc wwb. One it falls below that the water is being removed from the cell structure where it is loosely associated with the structure. This causes shrinkage mostly in the radius, some tangentially and little in the length. If we are considering roundwood then the only significant factor is the change in radius, split logs would be affected by tangential shrinkage also.

The two butts looked nice, straight, little sapwood, much like I remember of procera in the mid 70s when you couldn't give the stuff away.

Have you a cite for that? The Dogs fouling of land act was superseded by the Clean neighbourhoods act which allows areas to be designated as with Dog Control Orders, until then local byelaws and the Dogs fouling of land act still applies. The Dogs fouling of land act specifies public areas where it is an offence not to pick up dog faeces but it is by no means all public open spaces.

But are they biodegradable? Even the starch based ones cannot be flushed so I use the cheapest and put it in the black bin IF I am obliged by law to pick it up or it's near a path.

I would have thought the first people too complain to would be the local authority environmental health team. If the incident also raises a pollution concern then the Environment Agency hotline 0800 80 70 60

The flowers are an early spring show, I didn't think it persisted and only grew on recently disturbed ground.

I was being. The simple fact is that the thieves cannot be traced and whilst all of us with insured machines are the overall losers the one who takes the big hit is the guy who inadvertently buys the stolen goods because he wasn't prudent in carrying out checks. -

Yes About 1/2 hour of light pruning per charge Twice the bar length with 3 or 4 fully charged batteries if you're lucky. It's a good topping saw, not as quiet as expected but but reasonable for light use. -

I have just dealt with a stolen recovered machine, I have mixed feelings about telling the police now as they will not pursue the case yet the insurers, who paid out in full for the machine, will now take it from the guy that bought it in good faith. As far as I can tell it still has all the original serial numbers so a check with the importer would have flagged a problem. -
It shouldn't make any difference but in practice it may. VOA are the people that decide if a premises is rateable but since April the local LA gets to keep a proportion of the business rate, this has made my LA very amenable to large business schemes in the face of green belt rules.. Paying rates may be evidence of change of use but it will need ten years to pass for entitlement to that use. Planning is a separate issue and if the building already exists, in good condition, and redundant they must allow a change of use. There is a hierarchy of uses which has to be considered. Since April there has also been a relaxation of how use may be changed between categories unless the LA applied for an exemption. This was a dangerous change in a crowded country IMO. The chief means of changes occurring under the planning system is that planning departments have retained all their powers but their budgets cut so badly that many abuses which would previously been enforced now get through the net.

Did you get any pictures of the bark? I have been struggling over the ident for what seems to be padus, leaf as yours with red petiole, but the bark looks distinctly ailanthus like rather than dark with lenticels.

Probably applies to all parts. Jensen blades are similar and cost 80 quid, greenmech discs 40 quid, so a set is about the same yet you can turn the greenmech 3 times. How many times may each be sharpened? and at what cost?

Notionally about 40% of the rateable value which itself is supposed to be calculated on the open market rent but if it's in dispute and is still agricultural then no rates. There is a rate holiday for small businesses with under 65m2 in my area but I'm unsure this is universal.
