  1. Good point about the pith, it does always seem to cause problems however I my defence a; it's a very pretty piece of wood b; (and being a tight git this was the most important point) it was free! :D
  2. He doesn't sound much of an engineer. I hope you get it sorted without too much expense.
  3. That's a beauty, what speed did you use when you first mounted it?
  4. Lovely
  5. Yep, just amazing
  6. Well you said keep em coming, so guess what I've been doing this afternoon. This is elm burr. Decided to go with a natural edge, unfortunately the bark came off in one place so I then had to pick it all off to try and match it up. Quite pleased with this one.
  7. Now that made me chuckle
  8. OK as promised here's a few that I've turned recently, some better than others. Colours aren't quite life like, the camera was struggling with a combination of natural and florescent light, the first one especially is very yellow. First up is the laburnum from yesterday with some slightly better light Next is a Yew bowl, I think I made the foot a little too narrow A square beech platter, i painted the edges black before turning and had to round the corners due to tear out Cherry Tulipwood Oak, from a rootball, quite liked this wood, I might go back and try to cut out some more but the rootball is full of stone so it could be really hard on the chain. A beech moneybox for the other halfs plant sales trolley at the end of the drive. Its rough and ready and probably won't last too long as it will be outside but its colourful and will do its job. Comment please!
  9. Good tip that, tbh it really didn't look to me like it was going to split like that until I got the wall thinned down. Maybe I need to look a bit harder
  10. Barry Do we need a Honda engine i.d. guide or do they have identification plates?
  11. Was a pig to photograph, might try to get some in daylight tomorrow along with a few others that I haven't put up here.
  12. Buy good oil and everything gets 50:1
  13. Yes that's copper wire, the centre wire from a sky cable Not sure what's going to happen when it oxidises, might just leech into the wood. Ian, I would have used bark, I know you have recommended chestnut bark in the past, but I wanted to get it stitched up fairly quickly in case it decided to open any more. Unfortunately the only bark I had to hand was oak and somehow I don't think that would really do it
  14. This thread is doing nothing for my bad case of saw envy. I started with a 650 and 30" bar then got a 36" alaskan. After several problems with the 650 I ended up putting a 660 top end on it. I've always looked at getting something that would cut a bit faster so have half heartedly been looking for a big old Stihl for a while now, my landlord has a 090 but won't sell it to me! I did buy a 056 for £50 last year but it has an issue with the flywheel key, must speak to spud to see if he can come up with a clever solution.
  15. Not a lot going on here (probably because Steve's lathe has had problems) So I thought I would put my latest effort up. Laburnum which had some nasty splits coming, one piece flew off (the missing v ) and I thought would try stitching the other side. First attempt at this, the first wire I tried was too thick, just about got away with the thinner one.
  16. Garlic naan for me please
  17. Well done for posting, hope things get better for you. Are you still trading?
  18. Form the kitchen window, almost a daily event, was a pain in the butt during rutting with 2 or 3 stags roaring all night right under the bedroom window! The one on the left doesn't look too well though, don't know where the adults are today, there were 20 in the field in front on Thursday evening when I got home Chickens don't take much notice of them.
  19. Sound great to me, got a problem with my Izzy hunting unless on full revs, will have to go to shed to look up model number etc and that's not happening in this weather!
  20. Had one installed in a cottage a few years ago, was carpet over stone tiles. All we did was cut the carpet away to the required distance, added a wooden trim to stop the carpet fraying and then installed the wood burner straight on the tiles.
  21. Breezy with a light sprinkling of snow, melting quick though
  22. Would love to see this feature.

    Lathe woes!

Thanks to Mike Dempsey I'm back in action with the lathe. I received the tool banjo from Mike on Wednesday, I knew before I got it that the leg of my tool rest was 3mm smaller than the hole in the new banjo but thought I could probably make a shim to fit, failing that I could always buy a toolrest with a 19mm leg. Miserable day today so I went out to the workshop to see what I can do. When I got the lathe 18 months ago I got a few bits and bobs with it and in amongst that was a double length rest which lucky for me had 19mm legs Cut it in half and offered it up to see how it looked. A bit too high and the leg was too long. 10 minutes with the grinder had it looking much better. Tried it out by finishing off the piece I was working on when the original banjo broke, a coloured spinning top Thanks again to Mike and Arbtalk, my 32 year old lathe turns again.
