  1. I reckon paint or dye/stain is the best guarantee for a full colour change. I've been experimenting with burning lately and unless you burn the **** out of the wood it only burns the prominent surface areas leaving the hollows and recesses un-burned. The vinegar solution works well too, I've used it in the past with 000 wirewool on oak which is full of tannins and it came out jet black.
  2. Hi mate, Great first effort so far, quite a step up from shrooms:thumbup1: Take a look at other carved welcome bears, that will help. You could try out ideas with clay, playdo, wax,or soap in miniture, that way you'll have a good idea what shapes you want when you pick up the saw.
  3. Dan that's cool! Really like the steps mate:thumbup:
  4. Have to agree that looks like it could make a terrible mess of you, please be careful. Dervishcarver on here had a nasty mishap with one of the lancelot discs, if you want to remove a lot with a grinder get a turbo plane from arbortec, they are pricey but much safer IMO. Sanding discs on a flexi pad on grinder for finer detail/sanding. You can do almost all work with a saw and they have far more safety features built in. Just go easy and be prepared for kickback, grinders can bite as well as saws.
  5. Hi John, if you type in what you're after in the main search bar, then scroll down. On the left is a column of different search options, keep looking until you see completed listings and click the box mate.
  6. I can view it on the laptop but not on the phone, sorry I can't work out how to change it.
  7. I like that a lot Andy:thumbup:
  8. Carved this last week and the customer sent this pic today. The tree had a rot pocket that spewed out stagnant water when I cut through it at the top but could not find a seem lower down. I've been today and it does seem a lot drier, drilled a few holes near base to see if I could lance the suspected trapped water but no luck. Could it just be what the wood is holding being released? Customer is concerned and I'm a little flummoxed as I've not come across this before. Any ideas would be very much appreciated, thanks.
  9. I'd be interested I've just done this one granted it's not hollowed but am working on this one which I have hollowed.
  10. Thanks everyone, it has been a great project to be involved with, the clients wanted a door that could open and a recessed window with crossbar detail. The rest just kind of evolved, the tower and chimney came about to seal two exposed rot spots. Yes the tree is beech and it took me 3 days split over 4 to complete. As always I would have liked another couple of hours on it but you have to work to time and money restraints, I have to keep reminding myself it's a business:laugh1:
  11. Hey thanks guys, it's been an enjoyable job making it up as you go along. My part in this has ended, the customer has kindly offered to tidy up after me and oil the piece as the job had over run slightly and he wanted as much carving done as possible rather than do less and pay me to clean up. He's going to make a handle for the door as a final personal touch. Here it is as I left it this morning.
  12. It's about 98% finished, just a bit more to do tomorrow and then it's done!! I should say that it is not hollow, but tricks the eye pretty well:001_smile:
  13. Some nice flowing movement there
  14. If you're after something different...
  15. Not tried one but a lot of carvers rate the 192 as a detail saw. Sticking with Stihl, ms200/201, or even the new 150 are great pro saws. the 181 or 211also if on a tighter budget. Echo are great saws, if I had money to spend I'd get a CS-280WES, only £230 with a 2yr pro warranty/5 yr home user. I don't work for Echo, but if they want to give me a saw for my blatant plugging that's ok with me:laugh1:
  16. Matty's original statement that the clues in the name went right over my head as I hadn't noticed the OP's name:001_rolleyes: I thought he was talking about Northern Tool, turns out they're one and the same:lol:
  17. Cheers Ryan mate, I now have the other so all good
  18. Been given 4 of them today as payment and hope to get at least 2 working without too much hassle. Can anyone put up a link for the manuals /diagrams please? Cheers, Si
  19. Alright Barry, Ha ha too nice for a jail mate, that would be encouraging him to be naughty! But yeh, there's just enough room for me to squeeze in through that doorway, so plenty of room for little ones:thumbup1:
  20. Still no news on the tree house, but finished these little asparagus spears and had a very quick play with some abstract forms, nothing goes to waste:laugh1:
  21. Liking the chicken in the background:thumbup1:
