Hi Rob, I've just noticed on your site that Stihl now do a 3.5 mm hand file for carving chain. I've been finding that the 3.2 file is undercutting and not taking off the top edge too well. Out of frustration I've tickled it with a 4mm. I wasn't too impressed with Stihl files on your test but if they fit better then I think they must be worth trying. Are the other makers going to produce this size mate? -
There were some bargains to be had on ebay last week for 880's Wish I'd had the money to snap one up. I'll have one one day:) Cheers, Si

Hi John, I rough carve with an 066 on a 20" and it cuts great! Bit thirsty mind. Swap to a 36" for big stuff and occasional ripping, would love an 880 though.

I'll be trying out some granberg chain in the next few days. Supplied by no other than RobD, good to know it can all be sharpened to 10 degrees. It may be a myth but I heard years back that ripping chain will cut through chainsaw pants:scared1: Have there been any tests regarding stopping ripping chain? Not heard about the increased risk of kickback though, and I've freehand ripped quite a lot and had more kickbacks off normal chain

Hello, new member looking for some chainsaw advice please.

Sorry if stating the obvious but make sure whatever boots you get they are chainsaw ones. I would get your safety gear same time as the saw so that you're set up to go for your course. Saw, chainsaw boots, chainsaw trousers, helmet/visor/ear muffs, and chainsaw gloves. Also a must, a large wound dressing. I keep one in a sealed butty bag in my pocket . -
I usually use carving chisels, bare minimum get a flat, a gouge and a skew. I don't have a die grinder but would like to try one out on these kind of details.

It's meant to be there, but does look like it's slipped further into the pipe. There's also a flat head screw the other end by the foam filter. Spud can put you straight on the whats and why fors:001_smile:

Hi RTS1, I guess you're after advice on detail saws. Stihl rear handled 200 or 201, or the new 150 maybe. Echo 270 or 280 WES are popular too. Don't think you could go wrong with any of those. If on a budget either go down the second hand route or get an ms 180/181, I think there's one on arbtrader. Best to get a 1/4 sprocket plus dime tip carving bar and chain. A quick conservative measure sees it at just over 3cu foot, so about £100 Being seasoned for 20yrs will no doubt bump it up some more:001_smile:

Barry I'll put the word out at the place where I carve from. It get lots of tree and landscape firms tipping arb waste so should be plenty of eyes and ears over this side mate.

Rest assured it's on, just wondered if it would be detrimental to run without one. For the record, I ended up using two dots of superglue to hold it on the muffler until it was in position for bolting on. Probably not the best solution, wish I'd thought of petroleum jelly now.

I've recently spent more time than I would have liked replacing the muffler on an ms200 back handle. My question is and I should have asked beforehand:001_rolleyes: Is there a trick/nack to fit one as the gasket kept sliding out of place:laugh1: Cheers, Si
