  1. I have an Argo which I wouldn't say is suitable. Not much clearance and easy to belly on the smallest stump. It's also very light so if winching, it would probably need anchoring as it will just slide along the ground. I also have a Scottrac on tracks with a 5t winch which is pretty good and alot more powerful than the Argo. I can pull out 4 trees quite easily with the Scottrac at a time. With tracks boggy peat isn't much of a problem.
  2. I got one of these calls today, but had a meeting going on so couldn't waste their time this time. I just told him he was a liar and never call again. Another time while injured (off work) I spoke to an Indian guy who was having a bit of chit-chat with me about tennis and whatever crap was on TV. He asked about the weather here and I asked "How hot is it where you are?" he stuttered a wee bit before admitting he was in Dheli, 40 degrees. 45 mins later he hung up...
  3. We put one in our comunity centre and it seems to work great. It's on 24/7 set at 14 degrees. The bills are a lot lower than they used to be though we also have a lot of insulation in the building. We are close to the sea and it seems you are lucky to get 6 years out of a unit with the salt spray we get. An army base down the road changes them after 4 years! They are nearly on the beach though. I wouldn't have one myself due to what I hear about the salt spray, but it does work well otherwise.
  4. I was using a Scottrac witha 5 tonne winch and could haul quite big trees over soft ground no problem.
  5. Try downloading the latest firmware from the GoPro website. It's pretty easy to do and will take only a few minutes. It sorted my HD3 Black..
  6. Timbersports on tonight on Eurosport2 at 10pm. Not sure what it is yet, but got something to do with logging competitions in Norway.
  7. It would be good to see some actual cutting being done as they used to show on Ax men, but I thought the last series was all done for the cameras. Anyhoo, Ax men is on again at 10pm on History or Discovery ( cant remember which) on saturday (I think). I'm not so good at this information giving stuff..
  8. I got a good deal from Arnold Clark in Perth for a Navara. They even drove it up to Inverness for me so I didn't have to go down to get it.
  9. I have both Le Chameau leather lined wellies and Meindel Dovre Extreme boots. The wellies are great for a day beating through bogs, but on steeper rougher ground the Meindels are better. The Meindels are almost like wellies anyway with their height, but you have more support and more weight. I would recomend both. Meindel BushWear: Meindl Dovre Extreme GTX -wide Boots When I'm driving with these, I tie them off at the ankle then do them right up when I'm good to go.
  10. Ah, the nearest Russians to us are probably in Russia. No problems there I don't think. Does CB work with UHF radios?
  11. Good stuff Andy. Aye I wouldn't have any problems round here with kids being on air. There is only around 200 people in the village mostly over 60 years old and only a dozen wee squids. The sprogs that are here are more into the Nintendo DS. As long as there isn't a Nintendo DS UHF I would be sorted. Cheers..
  12. Ah, I used UHF when I was working on a cruise ship once which gave us a great signal through steel and up to a few miles away where we were working. Thanks again for all the replies, I need to learn abit more about these things..
  13. Do you know how much a licence is. Also anyone know what is the difference between UHF and VHF? I have a VHF licence for sailing though I think you are not allowed to use it from land for some reason.
  14. Thanks Paul and Desertrat. Aye Desert, but we have poor phone coverage here. My phone works in less that 50% of the forest. Where I mostly work there is no signal..
  15. Does anyone know of any walkie talkie radios that would be good for use in a forest with a coverage of about 3-4 miles. Similar to another post here, I am working alone and in an area with no phone coverage. There is nothing between the house and the forest line of sight wise.I need to be able to check in now and again and am thinking of a radio that would work up to 4 miles away. If it worked with CB radio it could be handy too. Maybe have a home base at the house and a walkie with me. Does anyone use or know of something like this? Thanks.
  16. Great stuff! Thanks again for all the replies. I will look into it tomorrow..
  17. Thanks for the replies. The work will be done in our own private forest owned by our family. There may be a couple of other smaller jobs on other private forests owned by another family. Getting training somewhere now seems to be the problem..
  18. I am trying to find out if there is a qualification needed or existing on the use of forwarders? I am going to be using one on our own private land. I have been told by one forestry college that it doesn't exist, but then I'm told HSE says you have to have training. It all seems a bit airy-fairy...Any ideas? Thanks.

  20. Oh my...Sorrrry! Aye ok I hope they win. But support can also be by willing someone on(holding a person up and so on). Ok maybe not shouting at the TV, but you hear athletes saying they got support from the crowd that helped them along..
  21. I support lots of English athletes from rowing, cycling, track, windsurfing and others, but I can't stand football and all the hype. I don't follow any football, but could probably tell you all about 1966 (I was born in 73). I'm actually hoping England win next time so they can change the record and maybe talk the next century about whatever year the WC is. Anyway, come on Cavendish and Wiggins! Even Miller ( Is it just me or does he not sound very Scottish when he speaks?)
  22. And a tidy bird...Ah well next year...
  23. That was actually misquoted in the press. He was having a joke with Tim Henman on TV and they both had a laugh about it. He lives in England with his English girlfriend. Not arguing, but just giving the facts. COME ON ANDY!!!
  24. You guys are having a lot of rain eh. We are needing some. Not complaining, but 4 months dry sunny and only 7 rainy days means it's very dry here in the islands. At least the wind has finally kicked in so I might get out windsurfing today..
  25. On now on BBC2 all about forests.
