    Biting flys

No, not clegs. They are wee flys. I am working in woods, they seem to be about more in the sunshine. There aren't many when I'm working in the shade. I still have bite marks from about 10 days ago. I got some more on saturday when I was wearing shorts while biking.

    Biting flys

In the last couple of weeks i've been bitten by some sort of small fly. They look like a normal house fly, but about a third of the size. Their legs are coloured black with a white patch in the middle. The black-white-black colouring is roughly in thirds. I have been bitten a few times on my arms and legs now. The marks come up in a lump and are really itchy for days later. I thought midges were bad, but these things are something else! I've never seen them before. We have had a really warm March in the Hebrides so I dunno if that has something to do with it. Any ideas what these beasts are?
  3. I'm planting them too. I hope to have quite a selection around my house , which hasn't been built yet. I'm working on my garden so far..
  4. I planted some seeds a couple of weeks ago and 3 have sprouted just yesterday. I'm 39 now, but like the idea someday people might remember who planted them when they are huge..
  5. My quad has seen better days, infact the frame has collapsed and a few other problems. Though brakes aren't important. I don't think the dumper or the Haggalunds would be so suitable. I had thought of the Haggalunds before, but they are a bit wide. I would love one just for going all over the island! I'm having a look at a couple of small forwarders. The Norcar which it seems are now Logset and the Mini Bruunett. I missed out on a decent looking one. There are a few battered looking ones around Europe.
  6. Thanks for all the replies. I think we might be needing some sort of tracked machine.
  7. Hola all. Iwould like to find out if a small forwarder would be the best machine for taking wood to the road on deep peat ground. Over the years I've used quads and an Argo for hauling fencing materials all over the area and find its too wet and slippery to be hauling antyhing over a couple of hundred kilos. Does anyone have an idea what a smallish forwarder (a load of 4 tonnes or so) would be like on uneven peat ground. There are no really steep slopes and the farthest haul would be about a mile.
  8. I would guess the handle when it's upright.
  9. Looks like a handy machine to do a few jobs..
  10. Oilskin trousers over your gear stops any thorns catching' A bit sweaty on a hot day, but no tears or snagging.
  11. I had an 05 plate D22 and of course the engine went pop. It was fine after it was fixed though. I now have a D40 which has a lot more pulling power. I'm not so keen on a switch for the 4WD, but it works fine. I put new tyres on as soon as I got it because the ones it came with were rubbish on wet grass. My brother has an 08 L200 which has less guts than my old D22. We had a gas cylinder and 10 bags of cement in the back of his L200 and it seemed to struggle. He did have an 06 Hilux which had loads of problems with the engine management.
  12. I have given food to folk I didn't know. They are not always looking for drugs. I ask them if they are really wanting food or is it for drugs or booze and if the answer is no I buy the food and give them that. It's not against junkies or boozers, but I don't want to fund them killing themselves. I don't give the cash.
  13. There was a 60kt kind of breeze here today. Ferries were off for a while..
  14. Hah hah hah ! Brilliant! I would do the same.
  15. Since Rover mentioned importing them first I would like to order one if you are taking names. £99 seems reasonable even though I now get a free prescription of ibuprofen. Stick me down for one. I will pm you my phone number.
  16. That looks like quite an old bar.
  17. I made this out of scrap handrails and wall ties. I just use a pair of tongs to pull the log through. I am going to put a guard on it yet too.
  18. Nah, the place for the balls aren't big enough..
  19. I use a lot of the Power Bar gels which are great and also have a tube (20 tablets) of High 5 Zero. There is no sugar in Zero, but is an electrolyte mix. 1 tablet mixed with a litre of water keeps cramp away. Easy to keep in your lunch bag. I've used a lot of different stuff over the years as an outdoor sports instructor and lots of outdoor work and now cutting and find these two are the best (for me). I sweat a lot and usually drink around 6 liters at work so lose a lot of the salts and sugars which these two replace. Oh aye, a stick of RJ's natural licorice is always in my pocket for an extra boost.
  20. Keep cycling on the seat you have. If its a proper razor blade type one its pretty sore for the first few times, but your ass gets used to it. If you change to a big padded one you will find on longer cycles the blood gets cut off to your legs and you cramp up and have an even sorer arse. I probably wont be cycling for the rest of the year now (dark after work now) and every spring I have the same problem for the first 3-4 trips. Stick with the skinny saddle AJ
  21. Have you ever tried acupuncture? I have had it quite a few times in my neck, back and elbows. I can go in and not be able to turn my head, a few needles in the back and I'm like an owl! Its worth trying. Usually costs £30 a session, but my sister in law is a doc practising acupuncture so I'm like a test dummy for her. Works great for me though..
  22. Maybe this would be of interest to some. A bit pricey. It was designed for mountain bike trail builders. DAKINE Bike : Builder's Pack
  23. Hello Pete, I don't know about dry rot here on the islands. I've seen some wood from an old school being renovated here which is 125 years old which seemed fine. Other parts were rotten just from where water was getting in..I will ask some joiner mates if they know of any..
  24. There is a beach here in the treeless (apart from a couple of plantations)Outer Hebrides that is similar to that. There are tree stumps in peat on the beach which are probably 2-3 meters under water at high tide..
  25. I always drink High 5 Zero when I'm working all day with a saw. I used to cramp up all the time till I started on this. I started at first with it while mountain biking. I usually drink around 6 litres during work. Its a tablet you add to water, dead easy. A tube of 20 tablets is £6 which makes 10 litres if you want a strong flavour.High 5, Zero Active Hydration, Pre-Workout and Recovery at Discount Supplements Its an electrolyte drink which stops cramps and has no sugar so no problems for your teeth (aslong as you brush your teeth twice a day). Citrus and Berry are my favorite flavours, cherry is ming. You can get a flavour with caffine which tastes like Red Bull..Its great for a hangover too.. For energy I use Powerbar gels. Tropical or Banana and strawberry are not bad.. PowerBar, Power Gel, Pre-Workout and Recovery at Discount Supplements
