  1. Aye, most of the time a machine can get to it, but we have some bogs that you just wouldn't want to do by machine. You would have to travel a fair way on mats which would take just as long. Also, I might be a bit odd, but I like digging with the spade Its like a good workout...
  2. It is hard going at first. The reason I use it is where a machine can't get to easily. It's easier to dig a 100m ditch with a spade than dig out a bogged machine. The peat here can be well over 5m deep. I just dig it out and try and leave it neat on the side. I dig (for peat) two spade widths. Keep the spade at an angle and kind of saw your way along the line of the ditch with one foot on the spade all the time so you dont take the spade fully out of the ground. Do that up both sides then down the middlethen cutt across into manageable chunks. Pull out using the fork. One side of my spade has a longer edge for cutting at an angle. I will post a pic if i can find one.
  3. The fork is a long handeled cultivator. See here. Rutting spade
  4. I use a rutting spade for places a machine can't get to. It has a big shovel like blade with a two handed T-bar. I had to have it made at Chieftain Forge as I couldn't find any anywhere else. I cut the turf to be removed first then pull out the chunks using a large sort of rake. I know the Gaelic name of it, but not the English. I will have a look for one..
  5. Thanks for the replies. I guess I can do a wee bit with him while I try and get him on a course as soon as possible..
  6. I have a couple of them an HD2 and Hero3. The HD2 is no problem, but with the Hero3 make sure you have the latest firmware downloaded to the card. It's best to use a card reader to put the files onto mac or PC and use the camera to delete the files after transfering. If you delete the files from a computer, it deletes the firmware from the card which gives problems with the camera switching off after a few minutes. A Wasabi battery charger is good for charging the batteries. I got one for £30 with two new batteries and a cord to plug into a ciggarette loghter in the pickup.. [ame=http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wasabi-Power-Battery-Charger-AHDBT-301/dp/B00AAIPQYM/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1372421288&sr=8-2&keywords=wasabi+charger]Wasabi charger at Amazon[/ame] GoPro update
  7. I have started thinnng a forest and have needed to take on another cutter. A local guy is keen to start, but he hasn't any qualifications yet and the company will be paying for his training and exam and all PPE. It took me a long time to get on a course myself and am now wondering if I do some "in house training" as they say, can he work with a saw untill he gets the proper qualifications? Thanks

    Ticks!

You shouldn't burn them off or cover them in any creams. The tick will puke the stuff in it's stomach into your blood and if it's carrying the bacteria which causes Lymes Disease this is how it's transferred. Get a few sets of O-Tom tick removal tools instead. Only a couple of quid each. Smidge is a spray I use up here for the midges, but it also keeps ticks away.

    Biting flys

Aye, thats the very beast! I saw one the other day, but didn't get a chance to splat it before it flew away.
  10. Aye, it was here on the 30th April, a week earlier than last year. I saw one sitting on the telephone pole outside the house lastnight.
  11. Best stuff I've tried yet has to be Smidge spray. I even took a video and put it on Youtube. Millions of midges and no bites. Works with cleggs, dunno about horse flies. North Uist midges - YouTube
  12. All day long.. BushWear: Meindl Dovre Extreme GTX -wide Boots
  13. I just go for chainsaw breeks, merino wool thermal top (does'nt smell of sweat), T-shirt and a good thick hoody. It gets too hot with waterproofs on so I get soaked with sweat anyway. With layers, even if I am soaked through I am warm enough. I wear a fleece jacket when I stop for lunch to keep warm. As soon as I finish eating, get going again to keep warm. Two sets of everything to have dry stuff next day.
  14. If you use aluminium body on a steel frame you will get corrosion. The aluminium will react with the steel and fall apart. Throw some winter grit spray from the roads onto it and it will fall apart pretty quick. We used to use galvanized steel sheet for making trailer sides and repairs to dumptrucks and the like. I can't remeber the sizing of it, but was about the size of a sheet of plywood and about 2mm thick. I had a trailer which lasted around 10 years with this stuff.
  15. We have two massive ancient Danarms powered by air my father used to use for diving jobs. The only time I saw them running was on quite a big compressor. I still have both saws. We also still use hydraulic drills and impact wrenches for work on piers, they work great, but the hoses have to be held by someone else or tied up because of the weight. A small chainsaw would be much easier I would say.
  16. It would be worth getting a Wasabi charger for your GP3. Look on Amazon for £30 you get the charger and 2 batteries that last longer than GPs own. Charging this way instead of with PC or mac USB saves some problems. Use a card reader too. Basically, don't connect it to your PC or mac. Don't format the card in the camera after an update either, delete files through a card reader.
  17. Have a look at Engelbert Strauss. I bought two pairs of work breeks last year. They come with removable knee pads and a load of pockets. I have been working on my knees alot fencing and around the garage. They havent torn yet. My mate who recomended them is a full time sparky working in lofts and crawling under floors and has the same pair over two years. They are around £35 a pair and worth it.. engelbert strauss workwearThey do chainsaw breeks too.
  18. Aye, here in Uist (across the water from Skye)its been one day of rain in 9 weeks. I can't remember when it rained properly before that. The ground is bone dry and fires are burning down below the surface into the peat. The firecrews here have asked that no one burns anymore so they can get a rest. They have been out for the last few weeks. People lighting a fire and walking away! We have a forest here and I'm always smelling the smoke which is a worry right now. The whole island went up about 25 years ago and could quite easily again. Send us some of your rain!
  19. I have an Argo which I wouldn't say is suitable. Not much clearance and easy to belly on the smallest stump. It's also very light so if winching, it would probably need anchoring as it will just slide along the ground. I also have a Scottrac on tracks with a 5t winch which is pretty good and alot more powerful than the Argo. I can pull out 4 trees quite easily with the Scottrac at a time. With tracks boggy peat isn't much of a problem.
  20. I got one of these calls today, but had a meeting going on so couldn't waste their time this time. I just told him he was a liar and never call again. Another time while injured (off work) I spoke to an Indian guy who was having a bit of chit-chat with me about tennis and whatever crap was on TV. He asked about the weather here and I asked "How hot is it where you are?" he stuttered a wee bit before admitting he was in Dheli, 40 degrees. 45 mins later he hung up...
  21. We put one in our comunity centre and it seems to work great. It's on 24/7 set at 14 degrees. The bills are a lot lower than they used to be though we also have a lot of insulation in the building. We are close to the sea and it seems you are lucky to get 6 years out of a unit with the salt spray we get. An army base down the road changes them after 4 years! They are nearly on the beach though. I wouldn't have one myself due to what I hear about the salt spray, but it does work well otherwise.
  22. I was using a Scottrac witha 5 tonne winch and could haul quite big trees over soft ground no problem.
  23. Try downloading the latest firmware from the GoPro website. It's pretty easy to do and will take only a few minutes. It sorted my HD3 Black..
  24. Timbersports on tonight on Eurosport2 at 10pm. Not sure what it is yet, but got something to do with logging competitions in Norway.
