Hola, has anyone milled timber to use in a self build house? I have access to plenty timber which is mostly Sitka and Lodgepole on my doorstep which is owned by myself. I have been thinking that with the costs of building now that I'd be better off buying a mill and building a kit instead of giving someone else £200k for the same thing. I'd but in Larch to clad the outside and possibly buy Douglas fir for roof beams. Has anyone done their own build and what is best for preserving the timber after it's milled.

Hello, is there such a thing as a small mill for making fence posts? I have a small forest that I'm working on thinning and rather than just chopping it all for firewood, I'd like to maybe make posts to sell. Is there a small mill that would do that or is it just the huge factory type sawmills that can do this?

Hello all, I am needing a lowloader trauler for towing behind a tractor for moving machinery, but I'd also like to use it with bolsters for hauling logs a few miles. I thought I could get a trailer NC, JPM or Herbst type and bolt some thing like the Timbermaxx bolsters onto it when needed. Has anyone tried this?

Hello all, Does anyone know of any trainers in the North or North West of Scotland for CS30/31? I did my own at the Forestry School, but had to wait two years to do the course as they had to have enough people to run it. I have a couple of guys needing to do it now.. Thanks..

I've had a pair for a while now, they are much more comfortable than my old ones. They are cooler on the legs and have a bunch of pockets for stuff. They seem to be well made like the rest of the Strauss gear. I have had a couple of pairs of normal work trousers coming on for two years now without a tear.

Our chipper is powered by the tractor that will be used for transporting the timber in which ever form. If we were to chip straight into a trailer, we will probably get a bulk silage type trailer. I would prefer to chip in the wood and haul it that way. There is also maybe another reason to chip in the wood. There will be a few guys working at the boiler site so possibly safer to chip away from others.

Thanks Spider, I was thinking that chip would be more efficient too because of air spaces, but still trying to convince someone else...Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Which would be the most efficient way for hauling timber to a biomass site 7 miles from the wood? We are needing to move 6 tonnes a day and not sure which is most cost effective, would it be best chipped in the wood into a bulk farm type trailer or transport the round log and chip it at the boiler site? We have a tractor for the haulage. There are no timber lorries here so we use our own tractor. Thanks..

With a powerfull enough tractor I'm sure you could make up a sort of plough type thing. Maybe a bit of culvert size pipe split in half. Make up a frame to go on the tractor and cut the pipe so it sits square in the ditch and then angle off another section so it goes through like a sausage onto the bank. No idea if it would work, but it might with soft wet ground..

Aye, I'm 40 now! I was thinking I was getting more aches and pains and feeling quite tired each night. Turns out I was diagnosed with Lymes Disease today! Buggeration. I'm usually out every evening cycling or windsurfing or something, but been knocked out every evening for weeks. Sorry for hyjacking.. The spade is great though. Plenty time for thinking about stuff while digging..
