Thanks for the well wishes people! I know we're on the tail end of the hedgelaying season, but when I was a full time layer there were always people calling me mid february that wanted their jobs done instantly whilst I'd be struggling to get my work (booked well in advance) done before the nesting started. I figured with all the wet weather this winter there might be some people that got delayed etc and could do with a hand to get all the work done before season's end. Dan Maynard, I've pm'd ya!

Hi Arbtalk, I've been away for a while, but keep lurking in the shadows to keep an eye on you lot... I've run into a massive cluster**** of life-affecting issues (shan't bore you with all the details but in short: Mother in-law seriously ill in Australia so my lady is there. Daughter seriously ill in Lincs, having major arguments with their mum and not getting anywhere towards health. Lost my job in Oxford a few days after having to spend all my money on replacing my broken car so I could do that job. Few other things) So now I'm looking for a job. But with daughter being in and out of hospital at short notice etc, I don't really want a "proper" job as I want to be able to down tools at no notice and jump in the car. So I was hoping for some hedgelaying! I figured with all the weather we've had this winter there must be some hedges out there that were inaccessible, got delayed etc? I'm an experienced hedge layer, have been professionally laying hedges for about 15 years. Fully tooled up, keen as mustard! I'd consider anywhere within a 75 mile radius of Grantham, am fully mobile (I live in a large truck) So, anyone need help, or to offload a job they won't have time for before the season ends?

Thanks for the comments thus far. My budget is somewhat flexible, would £300 get me a decent enough machine? I have a good grinder/linisher for sharpening. I also have a good belt sander, a 15” disc sander, router, saws etc so don't think I'd want a multitool device.

Well... I don't don't really know exactly what I would like to turn... I would like to make some bowls, tool handles, small trinkets etc. Is there a machine that'll do most things ok? I suppose if I want to specialise in one thing or another I can get a machine to suit the specific purpose, but until I've tried everything a bit I won't know?

Hallo, I've decided my life is void of meaning unless I have a lathe. I've played with turning before, a long time ago though, and am a complete novice, I know very little about what machines are good and what just looks good etc. I'm looking for a machine that's easy enough to use for a beginner, but doesn't need upgrading too soon because of reaching the limits of capability? With such kit, is it better to buy a really good solid 2nd hand or new? What's a good selection of chucks etc to start of with, wanting to turn bowls, small plates etc.? I think maybe you've misinterpreted the blurb. The sprockets are replaceable but I don't think there's a spare hiding in the bar. Not the worst idea ever I suppose but it would negate the whole "as light as possible" bit...?

Yup, the beluga bulge was a recent addition to have a useable space over the cab. Now there's enough space to kneel in the bed up there (a design essential :-D )

May well be beech, with the "flaking" caused by the repeated damage caused by people climbing on it, as I'd imagine if it's accessible for kids it'll be hard to resist such an easy clamber!
