  1. Nice straight stick! But: Logs...
  2. I think (from the odd one if seen blown over) that they have an exceptionally shallow root system. So changing the driveway might well have destroyed a lot more of the root system than you'd expect. So I'd guess when moving one, take a circle of soil as big as possible, rather than a deep scoop?
  3. I agree with the now part. (though november would have been ideal) But why disturb them twice, just move them straight away? As for survival rates, it depends mainly on the wee one's ability to get enough moisture. So dig them out as big as is easily manageable, and water in spring/summer if needed for best results. There will also be some variation in what soil they're coming from/going to, but there's not a whole heap you can do about that. I've transplanted self set oaklets (12"-20") with near 100% success, and some hawthorn of similar size with only 30% survival
  4. But people were expressing worries about the company for way longer than that. As far back as june 2016. But because the books were presented in such a way as to keep the stockholders happy, the company kept trading. 600 million worth of pension deficit doesn't just appear out of nowhere. contractors have had their invoice terms changed to 120 days as far back as early spring last year. (killing some businesses) Execs have been continually paid (including generous bonuses) right up till now. Kneecap 'em and let them work on site till their late 70's I say!
  5. Because Merkin is in charge of Europe? I though the individual member states were allowed their own migration policies, hence the UK's pathetically pitiful 8000 syrians allowed in... If spain has no capability or inclination to receive migrants (economic, war victims, lifestyle seekers or whatever), then it is surely up to spain to sort that? I'm sorry to hear your extensive family is affected somehow, but I still can't see how it her fault? Her policy allows people into Germany, not Spain. If people are given german citizenship, they've become eu citizens and are therefore free to move within the eu, but this isn't generally what's happening.
  6. I'm not sure I understand, are you suggesting Merkin herself is roaming the Spanish countryside looking for unlocked houses to loot? Or is it the her policy of allowing refugees to find shelter in Germany (which last time I was there isn't anywhere near Spain?) has somehow made the entire continent a place where you can't trust anyone?
  7. I threw my TV out about 15 years ago (gave it away actually) Few years ago the inspector came around. As he drove up the lane he was escorted by a barn owl flying either side of him. He got to ours, we chatted outside about the wonders of the world, the virtues of country life etc. Then he left! "Don't you want to look inside?" "Nah Mate, with this on y'r doorstep there's no way you have a TV in the house!"
  8. I disagree. The ad can offend, and for fairly obvious reason. As such it was quite stoopid for this to have got past whoever approved it. I don't think it's with malicious intent though, just thoughtlessness. As for the latter half of y'r post....you come across rather rabid old boy!
  9. Lets face it: Most people that come on forums asking for help/advice don't actually want any. They just want to hear whatever answer they'd like to hear most. A brilliant one was a chap a while ago who asked whether he should mix 33/1 or 50/1 for his saw. He got 10 or 12 responses, all of which said he should mix 50/1. His closing reply: "Ok, that's what I thought, I'll just mix 33/1 to be safe..." In this case though, I'm genuinely thinking that the electric saw could work ok, all the torque, all the time! It'll be slow, but judging by the way the op is intending to proceed he/she's probably got more time than money.
  10. Seems more like just dumb than racist to me.
  11. A Stihl ms660 (the standard recommend for your type of use) has 5.1Kw of power The Makita electric 2.0.... This isn't the end of the story though, electric motors have much better torque curves than petrol ones. If I were you, I'd ignore the above and just have a go... The saw isn't heaps expensive, and will have reasonable resale value on eBay if it sucks. Just get on with it, it'll work. It'll most likely be very slow, but what is too slow for you only you will know. Let us know how you get on though!
  12. Bugger, hopefully you've sustained no further damage?
  13. To a large extent it doesn't matter just how the crime stats are measured, as long as they are consequently measured by the same method. I highly doubt such a difference in violence can be attributed to statistical differences. Distrust in strangers isn't limited to foreign immigration is it? I'm not gonna address the rest of y'r rant, but maybe look into the difference between correlation and causation?
  14. Just for reference, violence against people rose by nearly 20% in the uk last year. Over 350.000 Syrians sought to claim asylum in Germany. Not quite 8000 in the UK. Stating a 10% rise is a crime explosion, when the UK is far worse (it seems not due to immigration, mayhaps we blame the policing cuts?) Just strikes me as nothing but populist propaganda.
  15. Weird? A good welding mask will filter 100% of the UV light. The darkening is only for the sheer brightness of the arc, not damage limiting. Another thing a welding mask should do is filter the infrared light, this'll slowly cook your eyeballs, irreversibly. But a good mask will do just that? I know a 72 year old professional welder who's been a welder for over 50 years continuously, no eye issues?
  16. I'm just on my way back to Britain from Niedersachsen, where the consensus is not that a 10% rise is an "explosion"?
  17. Thanks, reckon this must be it! The baby cruiser has its spare wheel mounted on the back door.
  18. Can anyone shine any light on why some 4x4's have double rear lights? My brother's baby Landcruiser Colorado has rear lights in the bumper that look like an afterthought. There's also proper moulded ones, but these are not connected, never were (the housing doesn't have bulb sockets, though there's wiring to them) My dad's proper cruiser has only the normal moulded ones. An old disco we used to have had the afterthought bumper ones. My grand Cherokee, moulded. Whyyyyyyyyy???? It's not height, the big cruiser has the lights at the same height as the wee one. The transit van, higher still. It's not width, the big cruiser is wider. It's not UK specific. Whyyyyyyyyy!?!?!?!?
  19. Hailing from what is known as the most cycle friendly country in the world, living in exile in Britain here's my view: Hi-viz is a passive action. It only reflects when shone on. It is compulsory for cyclist to have both front and rear lights. (It's relatively rare to see cyclist with no lights in NL) If the law on bike lights was enforced more (big fines for no lights!) It would improve. Helmets are actually counterproductive for the health of the population as a whole... Having to wear a helmet is seen as a hindrance, not cool, hassle, etc. This prevents people using bikes more, which in turn leads to the population being less fit, less healthy. About 20 years ago, the law was changed to further protect vulnerable road users to such an extent that in an rta between a cyclist and a motor vehicle the motor vehicle is at fault. Always. Critics predicted this would lead to cyclists ignoring the rules of the road, endangering themselves and others (they've a get out of jail free card after all!). This hasn't happened at all. What has happened is that drivers have become more aware, more courteous, more cautious and more respectful in a calm way. Bike paths in Britain are shit! The entire infrastructure is designed for cars, where space is created for bikes, this often stops just before the places where safety would be much improved if cyclist safety was designed in. Bike paths often stops just before roundabouts, traffic lights, etc. Dutch teenage boys make over 25 times as many bike journeys than their British counterparts. The difference in girls is much higher still..... Coming on geezers is perfectly acceptable in the Netherlands, but never whilst riding a bike!
  20. Hi Ernie, Yes indeed it is I! I'm currently a lot closer to you in Boars Hill, so may give you a call if I need anything more this season. (Got most hedges done already though as I've other work till march) I just thought it'd be helpful for others searching, to know where suppliers were found and how they got on. Cheers
  21. Rob Dyer, runs chainsawbars.co.uk Why is it interesting to a Dutchman in particular?
  22. Would you let us know how?/who from? When people search the site and read through the thread it's nice to know
  23. Phone Jonny Harnan, he's the man! He cuts stakes in the south west somewhere and travels back up to Melton Mowbray area so might well come past you. 07771 734577
  24. Most dealers won't give much of a discount when buying without a bar. When I last bought an 880 I bought it with the standard 36" (or maybe 42, or 46? Whatever) Stihl Solid nose bar. Then bought a sugihara bar that I wanted, and sold the Stihl one on eBay for more than the sugi cost.(but way less than Stihl catalogue price). Dealer happy Me happy Buyer of Stihl bar happy
