  1. Can anyone tell me how to go about getting my thread back near the top of the list?
  2. Supply certainly doesn't outstrip demand in the woodland management and forestry sectors. I meet managers and contractors all the time who really struggle to find good young cutters. Could something be done at college level to enthuse more students into the woods and even things up a bit?
  3. Difficult to cultivate I find. Appears to do well on good arable land.
  4. Hi Matt, Good to hear from you! Both foot and retort are well thankyou. Puffing Billy is in hibernation until the spring, although I'll have to wake him up on thursday as there's a couple coming down to see him from Bedfordshire with a view to maybe getting one themselves. Did you have any more thoughts on them?
  5. Excellent idea Stubby. I have had some great responses, just don't want to leave anyone out which is why I asked anyone interested to get in touch by Christmas. One of my main aims is to make the woods financially viable. It will need to pay me and the other idiot a wage. We just won't earn the huge sums that tree surgeons do:001_tt2: Bring it on!
  6. Enthusiasm goes a long way! What are your plans for the future? Sounds like you are quite into your farming.
  7. That is truly repulsive, you sould be ashamed of yourself! Put me right of my Heinz ravioli. (other brands are available)
  8. Excellent! I'm opening up three areas this winter which I'll need you guys to keep an eye on come the spring. Afraid I'm all out of Yorkshire tea bags. Someone did insist on giving me a box but I ran out of loo roll in the wood and the leaves hadn't dropped yet.
  9. Come and shoot some deer Paul and I'll crack open the lapsang souchong. Do you mind drinking it out of my ear defenders?
  10. If you come down to visit your brother give me a shout, you could come to the wood for a cuppa.
  11. Ah, I did wonder where your Suffolk knowledge came from. What took you to Scotland?
  12. Close but no cigar. Wolves wood is owned by the RSPB. 'My' wood is Raydon Great Wood South of Hadleigh and is in private ownership.
  13. Hi Little Butch, no Dave's here, just a Graham. Thanks for the pm, I'll be in touch.
  14. I live in Needham Market, the wood is near Hadleigh.
  15. That's a lovely sentiment, thanks Stubby
  16. Hi bobh Had the best holiday of my life on Mull. Maybe I need to come and work with you instead:biggrin:
  17. Hi All, As some of you may know I manage a 200 acre ancient woodland in Suffolk. I currently work on my own coppicing, thinning, ride widening, restoring the ponds, and producing firewood and charcoal. It is beginning to dawn on me that I could achieve a lot more with the woodland, and have more fun with some help. This is where it gets complicated as I am not really looking for an employee, more a partner on an equal footing to myself. Income is derived from converting and selling the resource, currently firewood and charcoal but potentially all manner of things. As anyone who already works in this sector knows there is not huge amounts of money to be made, but seeing the woodland transform through your actions is hugely rewarding and there is scope for taking things in interesting directions. The woodland owner has other woods too so there is plenty to go at. Anyone with relevant experience, interested in nature, up for a challenge and resistant to bad jokes feel free to send me a pm before Christmas and we can have a chat in the new year. All the best, TVI
  18. You could try Andy Basham. I think his website is called Coppice Designs. He is not a million miles away and has done that sort of thing before.
  19. Hi Jim, Could I have a 75% good mood discount on a 3 ton timber trailer please?
  20. Tend to stick to the three B's: Beech nuts, Birch bark, Badgers. Not a big drinker.
  21. Weddings and funerals only. Baler twine day to day.
