  1. Thanks Mr. BCF, I usually find it pays to think things through.
  2. Add a deposit to your bulk bag price and leave your vehicle with the customer until they have got through all the logs. No unloading for you, and you won't be putting too much mileage on your truck. The perfect solution!
  3. That's quite some volume of work, unless you plan to add a comma!
  4. Thanks for your interest Essex Arborist. I do have large concrete pads within the wood (relics of the US airforce bomb storage infastructure). These would I imagine be perfect for siting a Lucas Mill or similar. If I could accumulate a load of millable stems, would it be worth someone's while setting up their machine and milling many stems in one session? I would be looking to sell the stems to the miller. Any that were not wanted I would convert to firewood. As stated, the stems offered in the original post are currently under negotiation with another member, but I am looking to set up a mutually beneficial long term relationship with someone. The wood is 200 acres so plenty of materual to go at.
  5. Milling after summer is fine. I will try to raise the Beech off the deck to avoid decay. I also hope to invest in a large logging arch so I can get good stems like this to the concrete roads which run through the wood. Please be aware that I need to give a fellow arb talker first refusal on these as he was the first to respond. I'll keep ypu posted. Will be lots more nice stems in the future- mostly Ash and Oak.
  6. I like ya thinkin' Thanks for your thoughts, really helpful. Is it the geometry that makes the towing tricky? Any more stories of small diggers in woodland management greatly appreciated.
  7. How about pallets of netted logs into the back of a transit van?
  8. Really enjoyed reading about all your wonderful machines and am now very tempted to try out a 3 ton excavator to help with my woodland management. I am intrigued by the idea of towing a lightweight timber trailer behind the machine and loading it using a grab on the arm. Do people find this a good extraction option over short distances? I suppose there is always the option of transferring the trailer from excavator to tractor when you get to a main ride. Does anyone have any idea how much weight a 3 ton 360 would be able to tow over flat woodland terrain? Also, how good are pallet forks on these machines? Do you think a 1/2 ton lift might be possible with a 3 ton digger? I am thinking about loading pallets of split logs onto trailers. Many thanks TVI
  9. Not sure how you measure for milling but the main beech stem is 35' to the first major branch and 2' in diameter. The second stem is in several shorter lengths but fatter. Not sure how much usable material there will be. From memory the Oak stems are around 3' diameter with at least 10' of clean stem on each. I would recommend coming to have a look if possible as I don't really know what I'm talking about when it comes to this sort of thing.
  10. Dear Millers I have four very substantial trunks available, two Beech and two Oak. I have no means of extracting them from the woods and thought they would be ideally suited to somebody with a portable mill. They will end up as firewood otherwise, and although I have nothing against firewood I feel these stems are destined to be turned into something more permanent. They are located near Hadleigh in Suffolk on relatively flat ground. In terms of payment, a contribution to the woodland owner would be great, or make him something nice! If you would like to come and have a look just send me a reply. There is the potential for many more large stems in the future and it would be nice to set up a working relationship with somebody who has the kit and expertise to make the best use of this material. Many thanks, TVI
  11. Now I know you have all been on the edge of your seats, fretting over whether The Village Idiot managed to get his charcoal kiln to Exeter and back before the end of the BBQ season. Well worry ye not! A well pampered Puffing Billy returned to Numbnuts Wood this morning under the careful chauffeurship of the very reliable R5log. A big thank you to Mr Log and to all you other arbtalkers who tried to help-especially Mr Eggs, Mr Dan Curtis, Mr Dumper and Mr Agg221. Have a good weekend All. TVI
  12. Have just re-visited this thread and noticed that some pictures were requested. My retort is returning from Exeter on Friday after having it's new design inner chamber fitted. I'll be burning again from next week and will try to post some action shots. Apologies for the delay.
  13. I'm seeing oodles of White Admirals this year. Quite a chilled butterfly, tends to glide a fair amount. They used to be quite scarce. Wondered if anyone else has seen an increase?
  14. I think he means the 'Thicks'. I'll pm you the email of the chap who oversees them and knows them best. He will be the best person to give you some pointers
  15. As I recall it was a rather warm day, and besides, with a mug of tea in each hand I needed some way of holding the do-nuts.
  16. Thanks Jon? I'll let you know how I get on. I'm waiting on some quotes and have a couple more people to get back to. All the best, Graham
  17. Hi Jon, You are quite right, it would fit on a 10' x 5'. It wouldn't need to go on it's side though, it would sit flat on it's base. It is very different from a traditional ring kiln. The problem would be that the trailer, load and vehicle would take me over what I am legally able to tow hence my search for a driver who either passed their test before the towing rules changed (around 2000) or has done their trailer test. Thanks for the input though. Graham (my avatar is not me but a grainy John Cleese)
  18. No Jon, They did deliver it in the first place but are too busy to help out this time.
  19. Thanks Alec, I'll have a proper measure up tomorrow and post the exact dimensions. Grateful Graham
  20. Hi Jon, Couldn't get a reply out of eggs' contact.
  21. Thanks everyone, I shall investigate all those options. All the best, Graham
  22. Unfortunately I wouldn't be legal with the weight. I haven't managed to find a light enough truck with a 1300kg payload. I am limited to 3.5t
  23. Hi Folks, Thank you to those who have tried to find me a solution. Nothing sorted as yet. Here is my last throw of the dice. I am more than happy to 'barter' the kiln transport. Two trips to Exeter and back from mid Suffolk in return for 15 cubic mtrs of split ash logs 9-10". These can be either for your own consumption or could be sold on for around £1500 (direct to the public). They will be ready to burn this winter and can be collected at your leisure. If anyone is interested send me a PM Failing this, look out for me dragging the retort behind me around the M25 like some demented World's Strongest Man competitor! TVI.
  24. Hi Alec, I would have to measure to get exact dimensions but it is about 2.5m by 1.5m. It has a flat base so doesn't roll around.
