Softwood or hardwood logs between 2” and 20”. Fresh cut or seasoned but nothing rotten and no brash please. Will be cut and split by hand for use in a log burner
  2. I'll also venture a guess that the utilities often don't own the trees they're cutting down as they only have a right of way. So they can't take the wood away without the landowner's permission?
  3. thanks for all the replies - every day's a school day the chippings also didn't give off the most pleasant of smells
  4. A neighbour had some work done on a horse chestnut tree and the woodchipper was parked on my drive. The chaps cleaned up pretty well but as the next morning's 1 cm on snow began to melt I noticed a blue sheen in the area under and around the woodchipper and by the random wood chips that had escaped but weren't cleaned up. It wasn't the thin film rainbow spectrum you get from engine oil and the like but more a pale royal blue sort of colour. Any ideas if this is from the horse chestnut's sap/oils or from some sort of biodegradable chipper or saw oil? Not complaining, just curious.
  5. Have a look at Energy management A to Z where you can get heating degree data - that should do the trick. I looked at the heating degree data for the past 5 winters and compared it to our gas use and there was a strong correlation. Then in our first winter with the woodburner gas use (taking account the warmer winter) would appear to have dropped by 20%.
  6. Note sure - they may not be mosquitoes but some sort of midge - that said they definitely bite! I am very susceptible to mosquito bites and these little buggers feasted on me. When I'm around people don't need to use mosquito repellent.
  7. What is it about freshly cut/split oak that attracts mosquitoes?! They're like flies on sh*t - hoards of them flying around and on the wood.
  8. Seconded - a passenger airline won't care one bit about any additional paperwork or evidence you have - if what you wish them to carry for you goes against their standard policy or against the policies of the regulatory/security agencies involved you might as well be banging your head against a brick wall. A dedicated courier company like Fedex or UPS is a whole different story.
  9. No worries; happy to make a contribution to the shared knowledge.
  10. None - I think the duty free allowance is £185 per person from outside of the EU so I didn't bother saying anything and the almost metre-long box didn't get a 2nd glance.
  11. Just bought a Husky back in its original box plus the box Amazon shipped it in. No issues with United Airlines and the TSA didn't even open the box to inspect it. If you're thinking of doing the same check with your airline first - some are more restrictive than others about petrol powered tools and may go beyond the TSA's restrictions. It's made in the US and UL listed rather than CE marked and presumably not tested but at £190 rather than the typical UK price of £350 I'm happy with that.
  12. Here's a blog post from the TSA about chainsaws - The TSA Blog: TSA Week In Review: Gassed Up Chainsaw & Deadly Lipstick
  13. How about tying it up with wire? Or coat hangers?!
