  1. Ah wondered who ud be first to comment, having thunk the exact same thought.
  2. On that note, despite our daughter working for the NHS, and on the front line, I already detect/suspect that "the usual suspects" will be looking for unlimited funding for the NHS, most of which would be wasted on extra managers and "absolute state of the art/nothing but the very best vanity projects, or setting up an "International Rescue" type operation to be ready for future catrostphe, which could as likely be an astroid impact, or one of the upteen other "unknown unknowns". And, yes, I do realize what it must be like working within the NHS in the present circumstances. But any economy can and will be crippled by unlimited Government spending, on any such basis. Marcus
  3. Edward, I too was more than a little dismayed at the ill-preparedness of the 3 people on the Government panel of yesterday evening, when in riposte to Ms. Laura Kuenssberg's provocative statement that the Government had caused needless deaths by delaying the lockdown, (and she made a long statement instead of asking a short question)they should simply have stated back, that since there was clear evidence that a significent number of the public were ignoring the advice, and still doing so post the Lockdown-down conditions, what more can the Government do? And if the Government had attempted to introduce a complete lockdown of travel etc, early days, when it would have been most effective, they would have been the usual accusations of Fascism. I very very rarely use the "c" word, but felt it justified in these particular circumstances. mth
  4. I can reasonably comment that since examinations were largely replaced by continuious assessment in order to favour the female disposition, (per Andys "equal outcome" type situation) girls have done much better results wise, hence more girls get the grades to study medicine. From the wife who taught Physics.
  5. That nasty piece of Troskite trash Laura Kuenssberg was snidely sniping at the Government again, if the large percentage of stupid plonkers in the UK population will NOT do as they have been instructed, wtf does she expect the Government to do!
  6. Our son who works in the post office, phoned mum to chat(so thats a positive side effect of Covid 19 !) Of all the numerous P.O. customers today, he identifed only 5 who actually needed to be there, plus he was accosted by a group of feral children at 08:00, so he reckons they must have been out all night! p.s. I spoke with PSNI Firearms today, they sounded very positive in respect of my very recent variation to put grandfathers .303 on my FAC, with 1,000 rds of ammo.(The RFD who was holding the rifle fucked me about sommat serious for 3 fucking months, so I finally had to do the paperwork myself) Fingers crossed.
  7. Well fuck this lock-down, my hired-in self-drive digger an dumper, to be delivered am today, have just been cancelled, due to the lockdown. Bugger! P.S. Stuff was hired from a local family run business, I was a little surprised at the non-availability, since I imagined it should count as "work", and since very limited personal contact is involved, therefore low risk, AND I had washed down the door handles and control surfaces in the smaller digger that I had hired in last week from the same firm. Yet our Son, working in a very busy Post Office, cheerfully said, only last week, that he and the other workers, will be expected to work to he drops or dies, then they simply be replaced! He also deals with many Chinese nationals, though that is no longer particularily pertinent. EDIT: I then tried CPH, who supplied a digger and dumper, left at the end of the lane, and despite my bucket of hot water and Dettol, the very sound young driver, instructed me to stay back(and I was anyway) UNTIL he had disinfected all door handles and control surfaces. KUDOS! to CPH.
  8. Thur and Friday and yesterday were fine and dry, today, Sunday the dreauth has been astounding, with bright Sunshine and that cold biting wind from the East, I am hoking in the garden with a wee digger and the peat is pure moul, though this ground has been undisturbed for 15 years. Fingers crossed we get a few more days of this.
  9. Dont tell me, that the Coronvirus killed that poor bloke! Just build a coffin round him in-situ.
  10. Why do we need so many thongs, is this related to the shortage of toilet roll or sommat?
  11. Monty "Big Balls" enjoying the Sunshine. Turned out he had a quite serious abscess in his scrotum, we had wondered why he yelped in pain occasionally, we thought he had a thorn in his thigh or pulled a muscle or sommat, since no visible signs, until it burst after going on 2 months. His balls are (i) Ok and (ii) back to normal.
  12. I belive that joke is even older than the Queen!
  13. Has it got ony bog roll though . . .
  14. Hey! Why has Mr Bowland not picked up on the fact that this Covid 19, cannot stand heat greater than 26 to 27 deg C(I saw quoted) Fucking stoves will sell themselves!

    hard chains

Gosh, ah actually went back and read the first part of this thread/post?. An ye know whut? Did I not read somewhere on here, a good while ago mind, about cheapo chains from China, that were whilst "merely" carbon steel, were well overhard, like as hard as the carbon steel file usually used to sharpen such non-carbide saw chain. And indeed, possibly/likely advertised or sold as "extra hard/stay sharp longer" aimed at the hobby market? Marcus
  16. I am self-isolating, tis real tough mind! P.S. Moving the glasshouse for a better view of the pond and somewhere to set a table and chairs to enjoy the view. EDIT, at 17:45: Just in after a big mug of perfect tea sitting oot on the flags in a proper high-backed grandfather chair, catching the setting Sun full-on, while watching the occasional trout jump(since those views below look due West), and with 29 deg C in the garden room(so OK the thermometer is catching the direct low Sun) the Covid 19 should be proper fucked, I hope.

Soften surely, unless quenched after the heating, with natural slow cooling after heat, that would be tempering, or annealing. Btw, I understand "work hardening" to be due to "hammering", or repeated mechanical stress cycles, not due to heat. From memories of Copper work in school, peening, or planishing, then required annealing to soften the copper.
  18. Perhaps a sad reflection of older values, but when the brother who got the farm was depressed because cattle prices had crashed, again, my father merely wryly remarked; "7 fat years followed by 7 lean". As in that used to be the business mindset.
  19. So feck saving for anything, ever, and just demand Government handouts when things go tits-up, I suppose they can always print ever more money.
  20. Or I suppose what I really wanted to say, was, where is the "free money" handout for those who prudently put by for a rainy day, and who will ultimately pay for all this Government largesse. Marcus.
  21. Let the blatent fraud commence . . .
  22. That above is a neat clever arrangement, with a grippy/toothed outer and (presumably) a super-slidy inner. And, so simple I never thought of it! mth
  23. Was it Olive Drab perhaps?, and Yessum, they all looked the same! As I found out at Hull docks when embarking for Ex Lionheart in 1982, having wandered off to ogle all the other strange and wonderous Army kit, and clean forgot where my Regiment was parked, let alone my individual LR. Oops!
  24. Funny enough I was intrigued when I got a LR "stuck" on Sailsbury Plain, in the rain on Smooth chalk with a slick paste of rain soaked chalk flour on top, I might as well have been trying to drive uphill on wet ice. From someone used to getting "bogged" this was a new experience. mth
