  1. Why are hoovers called Hoovers, or cut-off saws called Stihl saws? Using a borrowed Stihl 420 recently cutting the side out of a 90mm thick manhole ring, quite astounding, though a lot of that lies in the diamond blade technology. m
  2. And? Or, rather how do DERFA know, does the vendor inform them? Hardly ah fink!
  3. Quite astounding traction in those photos above. Hard to credit.
  4. Probably a glut of unneeded grant-bought "business plan" machines being sold on, means i should be able to pick one up at a sensible price.
  5. And! we have a winner! PS Caravanner, i tink.
  6. thanks for that, cos we been listening to a Cuckoo for the past month or so. m
  7. That ALL made sense, especially the last paragraph:thumbup: I have survived a few attempted tail-wags, by simply backing off the throttle and holding the wheel steady (with well clenched buttocks) Though with sensible trailer loading it should NOT happen, specially with a stabilizer fitted.

  9. I would not be without the winch on my 17tonne Krpan, yes, a simple on/off clutched drive, but an absolute godsend, used to pull logs from the stack, and up over another crosswise log/logs on the ground to allow easy straight-backed cross cutting, though I mostly then flick the 1.05m lengths on their end without the winch. I ditched the tongs and merely loop the wire around the butt or log, that way there is nowt to get in the way when fully winched in. marcus
  10. I figgered the front drive wheels to be a very sensible idea since when manouvering or turning one simply leans down on the handles, without needing to disengage drive, all in all a very natural and intuitive reaction. PS Now in its 2nd or 3rd season, and I dont know our Viking mower exists, always a very good sign. BUT I switched to Husquvarna strimmers due to much better vibration figures, ergo also buying Husqy blowers. I got the distinct impression Husquvarna has seriously "upped" their groundcare game. As has a much welcomed generational change in our local dealership. cheers m
  11. It was'nt that well sharpened, just saying like. but That Guy is genuinely in another realm fitness & entertainment wise. m
  12. I was only slightly dissappointed! There was a film about one of the Indian Hill Railways, going to Ooty, an old british hill station, the film was all about the importance of the railway to the community, and the various staff. A particular female Porter got a mention, normally mans work, but her husband had died, and she was paying her Sons through school and Uni on the back of it. All very inspiring, especially the clearing of the line after a boulder fall, bash a hole with a jumper, stuff in the dynamite, light the fuse and retreat round the corner, they were virtually clearing the still-smoking debris, when the train appeared! At about 5mph, flat-out! Hard Hats, hi-vis or safety cordons, nary the bit need.
  13. Is cost or perceived stability on slopes the deciding criteria? I would favour a small conventional agric 4wd tractor, like a Deutz Agrokid, I saw a 60HP cabless model advertised recently for stupid low money. On fat tyres set out a bit perhaps. The farmers in the Alps seem to manage fine on shocking steep slopes with relatively standard tractors is all. And surely the mention of rushs implies boggy, and Alpines are belly low and easier to bog, get stuck. cheers marcus
  14. Our local Hermes driver is known to us, he used to run a shop, he actually appears to enjoy his job, AND knows his rural del area very very well. Ditto the DPD guy, Polish I imagine, dels to both my work address and our home, hes been on this run for a few years now. Another outfit tried, on more than one occassion to leave various deliveries, which were for near neighbours, with us, I oblidged the first time, but politely declined the second, and less politely, the third time. I have not seen them about recently. Local postie is also a long serving guy. 2 out of 3 of the above, will sign for deliveries, and leave parcels in through the front door, or round the back if it is raining. Senior Managment keeps them sweet with homemade jam, which seems to work. Bytimes tis good to be part of a settled rural community.
  15. Less single parents living on State subsidies. Ditto less divorced and separated couples. All living on their ownsome, & most probably state kept. Less defacto "couples" offically living apart, in separate state paid houses, to maximize their benefits, while they rent one house out for cash and live under the same roof. Less couples with 17 or 27 children , demanding, and getting mega room mansions, at the public expense. etc etc How the heck could any society provide for this unending unpaying demand, I can not comprehend. Tis not necessarily the wealthy in their (earnt an paid for) Ivory Towers are to blame little wonder there cannot be enough houses. regards marcus
  16. Brilliant blue skies, 25 odd degrees, an it felt every one o them, down to Portstewart, after work, for a magnificent Morellis, double cream vanilla, ice cream, walked the dogs along the prom, stopped at Wetherspoons for a sup on the way home, an, thank you Maam, for that equally glouriously majestically magnificent perfect pint of Marstons "One is Ninty", followed by another that was just as guid. Maam. I then watered the strawberries when I got home, like with a bucket:lol:, honest!
  17. I unnerstan the rigid blade 2 man saw was for some reason . . . known as the "Misery Whip" in the states, I cannot understand quite why . . . hey it ud beat going to the Gym ony day
  18. Eggs, I cover Cemetery bookings 24/7, have done this few years and will do for a while yet, without stand-by payment or rancour. Though over the Easter stand-down I did have to go in and therefore claimed my 2 hrs call-out. byw. I do not expect staff to work shifts or weekends without some commensurate enhancement. Though triple pay for the possible 12 days Public Holiday a year is perhaps questionable, on top of another 28 days paid leave. And still some whinge! We might, very soon be put on 7 day rolling shifts, covering from 0800 to 2000 min especially over the summer months. I wont particularly like it but, tough, its a job. I may also have to switch to another office 25 miles away, and I currently work 3.5 miles from home. I came off a small farm many years ago and still vaguely remember what a days work was, getting wet, and the hard earned value of a pound. Unlike others I work with at various levels who think the sole purpose of the Council is to pay their Salary, for working when it suits them. However, I kinda understand, as local Govt employees, we are paid to provide a Service. So yes, I will be judgmental. Simples. marcus
  19. Absolutly Excellent Post above. And, sorry Eggs, but there ARE staffing "issues". Cause by uncaring unfit bloodyminded staff who "play the system" Honest Anyway, that Aside, "£$%^&* barstewart Consultants (and some still not dry behind the ears) who insist on the right to work Private using NHS facilities Fornicate Right-Off and If you are going to work for the NHS as a Consultant, or indeed a Surgeon, you will work a shift pattern covering 24/7 thus maximizing use of very expensive facilities and operating theaters 24/7. Less 3 day weekends and 10:00 starts. And Reception or nursing staff should be trained, equipped and expected to wipe the (copious) blood off the glass at the reception desk. witnessed with my own eyes, up close like. It was there for hours and hours "not our job" being the response when I finally commented like it was still there when I finally booked out of Causalty, untreated, and stitched myself up at home. Ps A deep puncture wound from a rusty re-bar, in the bicep, probably stonking with Tetnus bacteria too.
  20. Oh ere Mrs! dats proper fighting talk, that is! Re wor beloved, but quite absurbly dysfunctional, NHS.
  21. 3 litres 3 litres 3 litres 3 litres did some bemoan the recent mania for cc downsizing. tee hee! Who said der Germans dinny ave a sense of humour!
  22. matelot, mate, and all kudos to the MICE btw=Member of the Institute of Civil Engineers?, a generally sound thinking bunch, this opinion coming from a final year failed Civil Engineering Student. One requires to disconnect the 2 events, and definately NOT assume/presume one is directly attritutable to the other. i.e Immigreants = the source of all the UK's problems Bit like "the Pill" and Overian Cancer ME I look at what I know to be true, from personal experience of over 50 years observations, of some dysfunctional, some hypocondracial, some paranoid, some a trifle dylusional, some with inflated senses of their own abilities, sometimes even seen when looking in the mirror, but all work mates, Church mates, Pub mates, of varying levels of intelligence, who all sincerely avere their friends-and-relations are all, absolutly 110% halo wearing perfect individuals:001_huh: And any problems in Society HAS to be Their* fault. Their* being "the others" =somebody else. i.e. The Taigs The Prods etc etc marcus
  23. Unfortunately I can understand Nigel Farages appeal to the "baying Mob" of mostly uninterested/uneducatable Popular Opinion. Just like Hitler appealed to the screwed over Germans , screwed over by the excessive & humilating reparations, in the hungry 1930's. Any of these successful leaders of a Mob always have to find someone ELSE to blame. The Jews The Blacks The Muslims The outsiders. Never, but never, dare suggest the Mob are actually largely responsible for their own misfortunes
