  1. I pay about £850 for a small, full colour ad. I average about 3-4 calls a week. get enough work to justify the ad but its not great.
  2. Thats very high, im also 27 and have a 2008 L200 warrior insured fully comp for £600, and i only have 5 years no claims.
  3. In northern irelands 2010 edition of yellow pages there were 7 tree surgeons ads all using the same stock photo of what appeared to be some American guy wearing a tank top cutting some log with a big stihl saw. some of the photos were in colour, some in black and white and one was reversed but all were the exact same photo. You would think YP would go to the effort of aquiring a few more stock photos considering what they charge for an ad!!
  4. You should have put a tarpaulin down before you trimmed that hedge, would have made clearing up a lot easier.
  5. I wouldn't do it. Its going to look awful afterwards and it will never regrow, if someone sees you doing it they will think you dont know what your doing. I would advise the customer to remove it altogether, if they aren't prepared to do that then just walk away.
  6. Hi Ed, i find gumtree very useful for advertising vacancies, they give you 5 free ads per year. But even if you say "Experienced landscaper required" you will always get loads of people with absolutley no experience applying anyway. I had an ad recently asking for a CV with references, got about 15 replies but only 2 sent me a CV!
  7. A local nursery sells well composted wood chip at £15+VAT per cubic metre.
  8. .......
  9. Ropes are for pussies, i just climb up the tree and hope for the best!
  10. Ive got the 18hp electic start, its only £500 more than the 14hp and the electic start makes it so much easier. I got mine for £4400 inc vat. Great machine but difficult to stabilise in a trailer as it has such a high centre if gravity, i use 4 bungie cords in each corner.
  11. What a douchebag, why didn't he just cut it at ground level? He was only about 4ft higher!
  12. Thanks for the advice, I would say its probably between 30-40 years old, completley covered in Ivy, probably never been touched before.
  13. I would normally recommend a 30% reduction to my customers but this tree isnt actually in their garden, its in their neighbours. He has no interest in his garden, its a mess, they would prefer it was felled but he wanted to keep it. I dont think they are too fussy about its appearasnce so as long as it recovers it should be fine.
  14. Im new to tree work and have been asked to carry out a 50% reduction on a mature sycamore, is it ok to remove this much or will it damage the tree?
  15. Do it on a sunday when those gimps aren't working.
  16. I pay £600 for my 2008 warrior, fully comp so that sounds quite good.
  17. You should ask them if they want to supersize their bags of logs for an extra 30p, then chuck in a few bits of kindling.
  18. Just wait until he has to go out and buy a new 36" saw, wheres he gonna get the money from?
  19. just saw this old beech tree on the way home, guys were out until 10pm cutting it up.
  20. I know what you mean, everytime i go over a speed bump the bulbs get knocked out of place, then the cops pull me over for having broken tail lights! Another thing i dont like about them is the way they sit out from the trailer instead of being 'inset' , very easy to hit if your reversing.
  21. In an ideal world that would be true but in these hard times most companies would have to spend more than that. Its ok if youve been in business for 10 years but for relativley new companies spending 5% just wouldn't be enough. Ive been in business for almost 4 years now and im still spending about 10%.
  22. Ive got a stihl hs81t 30" for the thin stuff and a 81r for the thicker branches, had them for a year now, still going strong although it does take about 7 or 8 pulls to get them started. I used to have echos but the last one gave in after only 6 months and i was quoted £250!! to fix it, stuck it on gumtree for £70.
  23. Must be nice to use a range rover as a work vehicle!
  24. Did you manage to hit any of those cows?
  25. I have noticed more and more people offering free tree felling, and not all of them are cowboys. If you go onto gumtree you'll find loads of people doing this and some are actually professional tree surgeons with full insurance! How they make any money from this i dont know, i didn't think firewood was that valuable!
