  1. Well put Billy. I would add that you may consider a gradual buy out, for example the new owner agrees to pay you £xxxx per month for 2 years and signs a personal agreement to pay you the money even if the business folds. You have to be sure that the person buying has the skills to do the job and not let it go tits up otherwise you have to do down the court route to enfore the personal agreement. Its a very common way to sell a business.
  2. Looking good, we have just started keeping them too, my 3 year old named ours, all six were called Fred... all ladies. I say were cause we have since lost 2, one started hunching down, lost the will to live and got a floppy neck then double bagged and put in the bin. The other was taken by 'something' and ended up wedged under the hen house. Didnt know where she went till we smelt her rotting... we think my wife going over to shut them in disturbed the feast and the 'something' ran off. Down to 4 ladies now and getting 4 eggs a day, think the cost per egg is now down to £5per egg. lol.. Calculated: £250 in costs setting up divided by the number of eggs received so far (50). really pisses my wife of when i mention the CPE.
  3. Just using one of the new face book group pages, making sure i update it with a picture a week of a job we have done and i always run an offer at the end of the week. This weeks was £120 for 2m3 of softwood as i have shed loads of it i am splitting at the moment! On a monday or sunday i will let my followers (hail presidenti windfall) know what is being split the coming week and offer a free bag of kindling or something. I have a mere 44 Likes but its working for me.
  4. I looked at these years ago at the time they bolted up to a landrover wheel hub, scared the crap outta me just watching the demo! and the price was bonkers too!
  5. I have been selling at least 3m3 a week for the last 4 weeks, all unseasoned, i am selling "at last seasons prices". Figure becuase i am just splitting and throwing in the van not putting in a vented bag etc i dont mind giving my clients a bit of discount if they are prepared to plan ahead. Everyone who has bought has loved being able to pick what logs they get as i have been letting people know by the wonders of the internet what i am processing Lime this week, or Holly, or Ash, or softwood etc. If i had seasoned logs id be able to sell them as lots of people are still lighing their fires. I certainly am, we have the heating off and just light he stove in the lounge at night.. glad i saved some seasoned stuff for us! lol
  6. Erm i had it boxed in with cheap ply, building control signed the build off and i took the boxing out. The inspector wanted it to be either boxed in or with a s/s type child gaurd all round it - floor to roof style. At the time i couldnt afford to have a gaurd made bodged it with ply, but it looks good now and i am not waisting the heat. Thanks for adding some drama though.
  7. I have left the twin skin flu totally exposed where it runs through my bathroom, I made up a rail round it and building control was happy. The heat radiated from it when my stove is up to temp is superb, it warms the bathroom and bedroom really well. I am very pleased I ignored the Architect and didnt box it in. I love the look of the S/S flu and think of it as a feature for the room. Really cant see the benfit of running the twin skin pipe right down to the stove either though!
  8. compost heap
  9. Cash or cheque for me too, ideally cash but people just dont seem to want to spend the time to withdraw it! If i take a cheque i pay it in that day.
  10. Cut it in 8inch slices and you will be ok with a maul, i found any thicker and it becomes a proper chore.
  11. IME I would say there is around a £30 difference north south per m3 for bulk buys of split hardwood logs.
  12. Cheers for that, the last dead Sycamore i took down was a bit smaller and your right the hinge just cracked. Thankfully I had a rope round it with a grey fergy hanging of the other end so it came down in near enough the right place.
  13. My fingers are in my ears...
  14. Hi All, My neighbour has a huge Sycamore on a hedge row about 15 foot from thier house. The tree was very impressive with a perfect canopy shape but it is now just a dead white skeleton. I would say its 30 -35" at the base. Basically i want to get my hands on it for firewood, so i am wanting to know what if any the specfic dangers are of having this dead tree in close proximity to thier bungalow. For example, will the root system be weaker? definate increased risk of flattening thier house etc etc? Cheers for any help, and appologies if it sounds mercenary! but that dead sycamore will sell really well!
  15. I got mine from bag supplies BAG Supplies Ltd :: Packaging Suppliers covering the UK and Europe they were really really helpful. The bags are proving to be superb, very well made and strong.
  16. only if they are just splitting, if they are having to cross cut the timber before splitting then £15 a cube is probably worth it.
  17. Isnt Grissum dead now?
  18. Rover is right more info would help.
  19. I like this, simple and effective! But by split do you mean cross cutting and then splitting the rings or just splitting a stock pile of rings?
  20. I have had the same person try this twice with me, wanting money off to collect themselves etc etc.
  21. I would rather you did go on than just make statements, personally i am trying to get info not be a smart arse. I am sure you are legally allowed to pay an occasional casual worker from petty cash but what the description of occasional casual with regards to the tax office is i cant remember. As in how many times you are allowed to do this. Looks like ill have to get the old employment law books out. Plus you can just pay someone cash in hand if they are self employed, as you are not responsible for there PAYEE etc. Think you just need them to sign a basic contract for your records. I was also just asking for clarification of the 5 employee rule for H&S, i am sure i was told that H&S only start showing an interst if you have 5 or more employees? If i am wrong fair enough rather than just flame someone why not tell them why they are wrong?
  22. Which bit?
  23. Ill rephrase it, but i dont think its a shady subject to be discussing. If someone is looking to employ someone in a job involving chainsaw use and the operation of a 10ton hydraulic splitter that belongs to a small business owner on the small business owners land. Then where would that person stand with regards to liability insurance and the tax office with respect to employing staff on a casual, cash in hand basis? I thought you were able to employ casual staff on a cash in hand basis without informing the tax office. Would this employer also have to look at health and safety or is this just if the employer has over 5 members of staff?
