  1. Is this a quote from the woodland trust?
  2. I think there are quite a few firewood producers on here that still use a maul, i used a maul and tyre screwed to a large lump of wood when i was only making logs for myself. The maul handle would hit the tyre and bounce back up, also the tyre keeps the logs all in place so you dont have to keep bending down to pick up the bits. I watched this americans video and went and made one the next day. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRuk_jd1f8M&feature=related]YouTube - ‪Splitting Wood With A Tire‬‏[/ame] But as soon as i started making logs for commercial gain i bought a splitter that ran off my tractors hydraulics. I have now freed up my tractor with a Diesel powered JCB beaver hydraulic power pack. The splitter cost me £600 and the Beaver was £1000.
  3. So what would cause something like that to happen to the tree?
  4. I have seen a similar thing, just have to wonder about the weight/loading of a shogun type tyre i suppose.
  5. I have snow and mud tyres on my Suzuki carryall, they made it useable all winter in light mud/on fields and in the snow with no weight in the back. I will certainly be buying some to fit my LT35 before winter! Made a massive difference.
  6. Have you had a new piston and rings fitted at the same time as the porting?
  7. I am liking this one!
  8. Good ideas thanks
  9. Hi All, I am looking for some inspiration from you lot, i am doing quite well with my facebook page, by well i mean i am generating quiet a few log sales from it and the facebook adverts. I would like to run a weekly competition and i am stuck for interesting questions to ask, i would like them aimed at the firewood or tree surgery area. Only got so far.. What is the minimum moisture content your logs should be before you burn them? What measurement should you buy logs in? Weight or Volume? Is it me or are they not very interesting questions! Any questions with answers, funnier or daft as you like would be a great help!! I intend to give a free bag of kindling and box of firelighters, swedish candle, 5 nets of logs etc as prizes.
  10. Mine are bagged all neatly, think they weigh 3.5kg. I will take a picture later as i need to post a pic on facebook anyway. I have been told i can now get 4.5kg nets for £1.55, which is what the competition is selling for £6 a bag.
  11. This is my view too, i can buy it for £1.50inc vat a net and retail for £4.50 for no effort at all. I am very happy with this margin. I am also finding that firelighters are good easy profit makers!
  12. I have a 13 inch bar that fits my 660, its a bit of an animal with it on!
  13. fair point
  14. I had to remove two large beech trees from near by house about 4 years ago, i left the stumps quite high. The smaller tree stump has a large amount of shoots going bonkers from the stump, it now looks like a 5ft beech bush. The other as was suspected was rotten in the centre and has done nothing but provide seating when my dad is making kindling. From what i have seen over the last 4 years i think it will be a long time before any significant tree would grow from the coppiced stumps. I have loads of huge trees around me that would keep me in firewood for years and provide a great income if i were to sell the logs but if the trees are healthy and amazing to behold then i do not think this is any excuse to fell them. Even reducing them is going to take away from the sight of them isnt it!
  15. I made 5 of these today, now sat infront of my wood burner drying some more. Made 2 from macrocarpa, 2 from dead Ash and 1 from fir.
  16. Only do one wing so as to off balance them, we have 4 foot chicken wire and they dont seem to be able to get onto that. But they do jump onto the style which is 2 foot. We have one that we have called Ginger as she is always testing the fence and escaping, last week i had to add 5m of more mesh to stop her getting out. To be fair she was just slipping through stock fence as i ran out of chicken wire when building the run lol. I didnt put her in the coal bunker as punishment.
  17. I need to buy some myself, which is why i have the price list on my desk! They sell by the hundred for £22 + vat and postage.
  18. It looks like its 48 x 78cm, i have sample of both and the 48x78 is the one i have settled on. £22 for 100 or £80 for 500.
  19. Are you looking for one self powered, tractor hydraulic powered, PTO powered, do you need a 10ton one or a 20ton bad boy?
  20. Cool thanks for that price range, most helpful! Yeah i have just read they aint light, just looking round for a back up saw for cross cutting trunks in case my ms660 were to get sick.
  21. Hi, A Stihl 056AV Super Eletronic saw has just been advertised on our local classified site. The lady couldnt give me much info other than its her ex partners and he has asked her to sell it cause he needs the money. She said he has an idea of what its worth and was after offers. I have said i dont do offers and if he wants to sell it then name his price. Anyone got any ideas on a price for a saw that is supposed to run ok. I am thinking around the £100 mark.
  22. There is money to be made buying cars/van at trade price and selling retail... £500 would be easy made in a week.
  23. really do they go brittal or something?
  24. Do you have a service level agreement with him? if not then perhaps you should look at doing one with him. It will be a useful excercise for both of you as you will be able extract what the issue is and you are giving him a way of telling you exactly what he expects.
  25. I have been very impressed with Medalion, they sent me out samples of nets so that i could identify the size everyone else is selling. But according to the price list i have from them a 52x85cm net (which i think is around 25k or 42L?) is £23 for 100 or £85 for 500 (.17p). + VAT of course! What i have learnt about nets over the last few weeks is you need to speak in 48x78cm rather than Litres or in your case kgs. If you can measure a net you have already ill let you know how much they are from medallion.
