  2. but I like materialistic things. Do people like this really exist, and if so, what the hell has the evolutionary process selected them for?

Best way to start is to just hang a white sheet in the garden, with a bright light source in front of it. Mercury vapour bulbs work best, but they are expensive. make sure you mount them on a piece of board. They get very hot. The sheet method is my favourite for kids, as on a good night you can get dozens of moths. You can get all the kit you need here, MV & Actinic Electrics - Anglian Lepidopterist Supplies - Moth Traps & Entomological Equipment This is how effective they can be,

The Deaths head is quite rare in the UK. Declining sightings may in part be due to this species unique relationship with Honey Bees and their decline. Deaths Heads are unusual in that, whilst most moth species feed on nectar, they feed on honey, and raid it directly from honey-comb. As life gets harder for the Bees, so it does for the Moth.

Indeed there is, and this holds true for all of the macro moths. Female moths advertise their presence to males using pheromones. The females are not really interested in other females and so have no means of detecting them. Males on the other hand are VERY interested. You can sex pretty much any moth by looking at its antennae. Males have large feathery ones and females have slim ones. This one looks like a female (with the caveat that picture quality is not great).

    Worrying!

That's is a very difficult call. Would you really want to run the risk of the little mite growing up in care?

  18. I know there was talk of banning them a few years back. Don't know if it ever happened though. Mind you, some of the A bars and light bars you still see on 4x4's are just as bad, and most people don't need them. Then again, pretty much any 4x4 is going to ruin your day if it hits you.
  19. So what, this is the age of the interweb. Oh no, wait, it's a Stihl.
