  1. Thanks for posting pics, gives an idea of the sheer size of initial log. Some of the ripping was hard/slow going.
  2. You should have come along to the ceilidh and had a bit of a dance.
  3. Great weekend; hard drinking/hard carving/hard ceilidhing. My 4 hours worth.
  4. I'll be sweating it out, amongst some great carvers for 4 hours. Hope I can produce a nice piece.
  5. I agree. no point in spending a lot of money on specialist equip until you have attempted a few simple carvings.
  6. sorry, did not get to site where winch is today, hopefully get there tomorrow and find make etc, possibly Fransguard.
  7. I have a similar winch. Will check make tomorrow. The pads look ok in the photo. What is the problem?
  8. Good luke in a saturated market. Do you have a supply. If interested pm me.
  9. it was a fairly chunky sitka butt 750mm dia x 900mm height. wish I'd left it a bit longer and got longer horns but had to be manageable.
  10. again John, where are you based?
  11. Hi John, which area are you in?
  12. this one replaces a previous model - lasted 10+ years untreated.
  13. The idea of the thread was to find out if there was any factual evidence to proof that carving a smallish area was any more detrimental than a considerable reduction.
  14. The advice used to be not to fit a carver bar to anything above 40cc. sprocket/chain might also be a problem.
  15. To clarify the situation; the trees I have been asked to consider carving faces in are mature Norway spruce in an amenities forest which are having to be crown reduced due to recent adjacent wind blow, nearby buildings and Public safety. I have seen many pictures of similar carvings in other parts of the world. The question really is: does carving 20% of the circumference of the trunk cause any more damage than considerable crown reduction?
  16. can it be any worse than a naturally severed limb, wind damage, or final height reduction cut?
  17. what is the prognosis of carving living trees; ie. faces etc only partial cambium --- removal?
  18. prognosis!

what is the prognosis of carving in living trees?

  19. larger ones are good and clean and use loctite.
