  1. Tarps are ok short term but they can trap the moisture, a big dry shed is better for long term storage. I assume you don't burn a huge amount of wood, some people would have the firewood listed in your first post gone in a year or 2. There's a guy I know in his late 70's, knocking on for 80 who still cuts his firewood. Another guy says "have you seen the size of his wood pile, how long does he expect to live"?!! He was actually out with his tractor log splitter splitting wood for a firewood dealer in the last year or 2!
  2. My advice would be don't go out and buy a tesco bag for life, you might not get your money's worth out of it.
  3. Get the David Brown hooked up, jobs a goodun

I've got a few 205l plastic drums as water butts, one is a dunker with mesh on the top. The others have old household brass taps Cut the end of the tap off so the water comes straight down

Ah! The old green 240l general waste bins have been "converted" into your new general recycling bin. The old blue 240l general recycling bins have been "converted" into your new paper/card only bin. cue local uproar from people who can't read a leaflet (we sent very little paper/card for recycling, it is burnt on the stove/composted/used in the garden, so a paper only bin is surplus) By "converted" they mean the bin man stuck a new sticker on the bins. We live in exciting times

The Highland council is changing the bins about, general waste bins are now either 140/180 litre instead of 240 litre, and a lot of the towns and villages have new food waste bins. Tempted to go out at 5am on the collection day with the big trailer, free chicken food and compost material innit. Might get lucky and find something for my own dinner too.

I think the current carbolic soap is more "carbolic flavour", not like the old stuff
  11. Get these 2 lads from Cumbria to come down and fell it, they don't charge anything https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-69011665
  12. How precious are you about the 2 rows of garages? You could try posting the job on checkatade/mybuilder etc.
  13. I feel sorry for the hire machines. The average weekend warrior thinks wood chipper / green waste shredder / concrete crusher are 3 interchangeable words
  14. Unless the line has been moved since streetview, it seems to go right over the driveway. Obviously hard to judge distances etc. Powerlines and timber lorries are never a great combination Inquiry opens into Skye haulier John MacKinnon's death WWW.BBC.CO.UK A Skye haulier was electrocuted escaping from his burning lorry, a fatal accident inquiry in Inverness is told. "Power had to be switched off for a short time to allow rescue workers to access the scene, cutting the electricity supply to every property in the Western Isles and Skye. The inquiry heard that firefighters found Mr MacKinnon's body about 10m (33ft) from his vehicle. The only clue then that he had been electrocuted was a hole in his boot. A post mortem later revealed that an enormous power surge had killed him." Apparently the first calls for help was from someone many miles away who could see a plume of black smoke coming from the hill so called the fire brigade
  15. And in the green house I made these planters to try this year, strawberries in the bottom, various cherry tomatoes higher up. The planting holes are made by cutting a slot, heating it up till it's soft, ram a glass bottle in then let it cool. Give it more of a pocket shape than a drilled hole. There's a water device in the form of two 10" terracotta pots stuck together, with the bottom hole plugged. Fill it from the top and the water soaks out over a couple of days. The tomatoes are from seed, varieties this year are moneymaker, gardener's delight, cherry falls, latah, maskotka. Strawberries are an unnamed variety from b&m bargains.
  16. A few more fruit trees planted this winter, this apple Katy has blossom on it
  17. Rhubarb doing well here as per usual!
  18. The gateway may be 17ft wide but if it's coming off a single track road at 90deg it's gonna be tight for an artic/wagon and drag? Also powerline above so even if he did get in, how's he going to unload?
  19. Talk to a local training provider/college (or more than one) Tell them about your woodland, and ask if there was any way of doing a deal where they use your woodland for a few sessions and you/your partner tag along and get chainsaw training for cheap/free. When I was in my early 20's I did a job for a motorcycle instructor and payment was me getting a bike licence, I only had to pay the test fee.
  20. It's fairly common in the Highlands for people to buy an artic load of softwood for domestic use (24-27t or whatever). Sometimes for 1 house or sometimes it's neighbours/close family chip in together. If you can, it's worth thinking of a system to cut down on handling as much as possible. So vented bags or cages and forks to move them, or a tipper, or the conveyor straight into the shed
  21. Just wondering, is the wood for your own use, or to sell? If it's for your own use, is the plan with the barrow bags to wheel them direct into where the stove/boiler is? Are you filling them loose with a conveyor or hand stacked, what length are the logs cut to?

    WOW

If it's anything like my house, they probably got a woman to check for sawdust in the washing machine
  23. You could go back and finish the job and he still might not pay you. I know people will say you can take him to small claims court. Either way it's all hassle
  24. Douglas fir is good firewood

It's a trap. They'll let you get all lathered up and then the swat team will burst through the shower curtain.
