Just looked at one I have on the bench and if you actuate the choke - second picture lever on the left and then take it off so the choke is open again, when you rotate the black plastic assembly (bottom pic) the throttle cable is attached to, the fast idle should click off with an audible click. The rest is just inspection if this isn't happening
  2. You need to place the carb/air filter elbow on the carb and then apply the choke and fast idle positions to see what is going on with the mechanism.
  3. You could see if a dose of WD40 and a compressor will sort it and then try the more complex stuff.
  4. Well it sounds like the fast idle is stuck on somehow. I have seen bits of twig have this sort of effect on carb linkages but it sounds like you need to take a look at at the carb and throttle linkage.

  6. Has someone had the carb elbow off and not meshed the carb to choke lever on reassembly. On the saw before starting it, you lift the choke lever, push it back on to fast idle setting and open the throttle, do you hear a slight click as the fast idle is released?
  7. Good job, the OEM case reassembly tool is a bit like your home made ones - better tan using the screws and risking damaging the thread. You probably know but you need to "de-stress" the bearings once assembled, using your tools, it may not be necessary but you basically give each end of the crank a couple of belts with a copper mallet. This sorts out any stress in the bearings usually from using the screws to draw the cases together.

  10. A bent crank can rotate freely but if you look at the shaft on the clutch side when it is rotated, you will see it wobble if the crank is bent.
  11. Are you talking about the lobes being out of kilter? I have seen a 346 with a twisted crank. It was very visible on the clutch side when you rotated the engine. As ADW on big end play. When the big end fails, it tends to throw white metal bits all over the place messing up the bore, piston and ports.
  12. The purge shows it is probably the 50cc version as do the grey top cover clips. First thing to do is to check the piston out through the exhaust port and go from there. No problem on the advice!!

As Pleasant says, it is running rich but do the simple thing first...clean the air filter thoroughly not just a wipe over, get some carb cleaner, WD40 or similar on it and a blast from a compressor air line. It is possible the air filter is blocked....you could fit a new one, they don't cost much. Take a look at the choke and ensure it is not flipping on somehow. Has someone been cocking around with the carb settings, won't be the first time. Are the blades free and reciprocating easily? If they are binding, it is possible that the machine isn't revving out and building up unburnt fuel. Check the plug, if it is black, the saw is rich and the plug should be tan if running correctly. If the plug isn't NGK or Bosch, change it and get one from a reputable dealer, there are a few knockoffs floating around
  17. Most likely a stuck needle valve but it is possibly a split, holed or damaged pump diaphragm....not the one with the round aluminium disk on it.

  19. This thread reminds me of Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb....the " Hello, is there anybody in there" springs to mind.

With these carbs, if the diaphragm has a small nipple, the metering arm lines up with the carb body and if the diaphragm has the more pronounced nipple, it lines up with the cut out in the bottom of the diaphragm bowl. If you have done a few, you will know what I mean. With any saw that is playing up on idle or high revs, a full pressure and vac check is invaluable in proving the engine is airtight. Have you managed to do this yet? After 8 pages, I don't really want to check...sorry!
  21. How much compression has the engine got? If you can't pull it over, chances are that the carb has a faulty needle valve and has flooded the engine causing the crankcase to fill with fuel stopping you pulling it over. It is unlikely that someone has turned down the squish band, reduced the cylinder base thickness and fitted a pop up piston.

  23. The joy of autotune...it just adjusts for the mistakes made by others! It will run a tad better once a new rod is fitted.
  24. Nope, 346 just sounds and feels great and I like my 357.
