  1. I have used one as a strimmer before, they are good at annoying neighbours but reckon they are best at cutting wood
  2. My take is that there is an issue with this model of saw during some part of its history which CAN'T be blamed on lack of grease. I have done enough saws to know that most of the previous models had no issues with needle bearings detonating as I have changed almost none on MS200s, MS460/440s, MS260s, MS660s etc and many were minging wrecks where servicing was a stranger!
  3. I have muffler modded a few and have responded well plus ported a couple.
  4. Nope, I rarely get saws in to resell as you usually end up spending hours making pennies after finding out the saw you purchased was a wreck. Service works better for me overall - judging by my first three days back, it works for my customers as well!
  5. I don't climb but from being earthbound, the Echo 2511 and the MS150 with muffler mods and a retune are excellent and bigger....MS200, has to be, anyone who doesn't say that hasn't got one that has been fettled by someone who knows what they are doing or has just forgotten how good they are!
  6. The turbo head ...or wobulating head as I call it makes a big difference to the cleaning power.
  7. Hats off to the guys that get off their asses and get involved in keeping these old historic vintage ways of life going. Some of the best I have visited have been run by enthusiasts rather than money making accountants. IMO, you can never replace enthusiasm....it is contagious and shows in the way people talk about their hobby....the girl who showed us Happisburgh Lighthouse got married there.....sort of committed type and very enthusiastic This is on my shortlist for this year - http://www.strumpshawsteammuseum.co.uk/
  8. There is a water powered sawmill in Norfolk I have earmarked for a visit this year, run sporadically by enthusiasts and should be a good day out - https://www.steamheritage.co.uk/museums-and-attractions/entry/gunton_park_sawmill We visited Happisburgh light house last year, similar arrangement and was excellent.
  9. Its the machete that worries me - I guess you were carving the Christmas dinner on the bench as well
  10. Going a bit redneck now - that "repair" looks decidedly iffy and am guessing if it went, could cause a fair bit of damage to the side cover but what the heck....keeps me in a living
  11. Not a problem, good luck with that one.
  12. Can you stop posting bollocks on my thread , those pliers tend to be shyte, they are for circlips with holed ends and nothing to do with E clips that get pinged off SLOWLY with a small screwdriver in one of the two reliefs.
  13. Just make sure the clutch drum is OK and there is no wear on the crank as the earlier ones were pretty bad at the best of times. Just check there is no wobble on the drum! This is nothing to do with your issues but more to do with the model type and its issues!
  14. Is this a 261 or 260 as you say it is 10 years old but I think Stihl didn't release the 261 until around 2012! It is unlikely it needs a new carb, probably just needs a little tlc!
  15. Good call on the tank breather but on the 254, it unscrews from the tank on the clutch side and you need to remove the AV mount screws to get enough movement between the tank and engine to remove it.
  16. The poor hot starting may be that the piston has had a light seize dropping the compression. The last episode, first thing to check is that the throttle linkage isn't holding the carb open so you need to start it up and push the throttle valve fully closed and see what happens. You can also turn down the idle speed and if it runs with the idle manually pushed shut and the idle taken down then it looks like you may have an air leak. I take it that the gasket was OK and refitted? These older machines can crack the plastic inlet manifold where the bolts go through - seen it enough times. Other than that, you may have cocked up on the carb rebuild.
  17. Nice outcome and at the right time of year. Does it mean you want the rear handle a bit earlier now no rush seeing as we had a gentlemen's agreement on it.
  18. Yup, the carbs on Echos are a bit weird, it is almost as though the impulse isn't enough to drive the carb correctly and have had issues with more than one including Joes. Not the easiest to set up either!
  19. Got it bad he is a starter, I forget how many saws I have but it isn't 3
  20. Got a 280CD on the shelf looking for a new owner!
  21. helping someone always gives me a sense of enormous wellbeing and then I feel happy for the rest of the day!
