  6. Ok a silly question I know, but one that was asked of me, and I struggled to answer the question effectively? i realise there are many ways to use a circular saw blade dependant on which sector of the blade you use but is there a reason why anti clockwise is the chosen direction of travel. feeling dumb again :blushing: Dave

  11. Fancy trying some of that stuff:lol: I spend many an hour awake with the grey matter on full tilt, usually worse if i've done tons of planning or co-ordination during the day... "a holes" in traffic jams dont do much for my state of mind either, thank goodness i still have enthusiasm at work.
  12. Thanks Martyn that clears it up 100% , will drop you a PM tomorrow if i get chance regards Dave:thumbup:
  13. with the greatest respect surely thats just a horizontal step cut, not a vertical step cut ....this is why i feel so confused as there seems to be no defined consenus
  14. Hi Folks could anyone please confirm what a vertical step cut is?? my understanding is that the process involves placing vertical cuts on a horizontal branch so that material is broken off by flexing the branch left and right; or is this a discription of a stepping down cut [blocking down] on a main stem which is of course vertical?. sorry to ask such a basic question but this was not made clear to me when I carried out my 39 and i want to be certain regards Dave
  15. Just done a quick bit of googling [a bit late] and discovered that the tree was planted by the fifth of King Henry VIII's wives, Katherine Howard on a visit to Nocton on 13 October 1541.
  16. I hope this fantastic tree will get a few comments, its located at the site of an ex American military hospital at Nocton Lincolnshire. i'm not sure who owns it but it looks like it could do with some remedial work to protect it from further collapse, it would be a shame to lose it, local rumour has it that it was planted by Henry the eighth...who knows:sneaky2: We did take out a VTA before walking under the tree ...was a bit of a ad hoc visit, also some massive Redwood on site..an arborists paradise
  17. I thought I would share some pictures of the Bowthorpe oak I took last month. It holds the record for being the largest girthed living british oak. Its located at Manthorpe near Bourne Lincolnshire and may have been planted during the time of William the conqueror. I have many more photographs if anyone would like to see more regards Dave
  18. Congratulations ...you cant beat the joy that children bring into your life:thumbup:
  19. Genra spot on but not sure about the species
  20. Thanks Tony but what do you make of the mossy like growth on the stem of the second photograph in my first post?
