  1. I wonder if it's the start of a cherry bark moth infestation
  2. After quite a break from being involved on a purely arboriculture and forestry contract I am about to jump back in the tree world with both feet, but need to work towards a formalised qualification in arboriculture to at least level 4. I have contacted Life Tree with regards to their courses but wondered if there were any other distance learning courses that people would approve. Any experiences members have of working alongside Life Tree that they wouldn't mind voicing would also be much appreciated. kindest regards Dave

    Moles

If you haven't seen one in action check out the rodenator there are several videos on YouTube - one of my ex colleagues thought of a new control method he poured 50 gallons of waste oil down a run without telling anyone, a few days later the trees and shrubs in the area started to die. We had the fastest bloody moles in Lincolnshire as a result. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  6. Thanks guys, Ive got my name down for the basic PTI with the plan of attempting the main award however I'm not totally familiar with 5837. The bat licensing qualification looks like it costs a fair amount, I think I may contact my local bat group to see if I can build up a portfolio that way. Thanks again,Dave Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  7. Parrotia persica by the look of the flower buds Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  8. Hi benedmonds, thanks for your reply however I'm carrying out a viability study to see if this would be a suitable direction for me to take and would need to invest in attaining official competencies to undertake this role. Shame I don't already have accreditation as I'm searching for a new position and assume I'm quite close to you? Thanks again Dave Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  9. Hi guys, I'm currently doing some speculative research into business planning and wondered if freelance inspectors were in demand or indeed if anyone undertook this kind of work replacing council tree officers etc. I'm also thinking of putting an environmental spin on inspections and would like to look at developing bat inspection services. Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Sent from my iPad using Arbtalk
  10. If you haven't read it have a look at David milarch's book The Man who planted trees. It's an interesting account of his attempt to save the old growth forests. Also talks about assisted migration planting of many of these trees to preserve them from the threat of global climate change.
  11. Remember reading something similar a couple of years back where researchers had discovered aerosols given off by trees when under heat stress caused high levels of pollution. Still better off with them than without.
  12. Hard to make out, second picture shows a clear image of an adult shield bug assume the others are nymphs but have never seen so many in one group. Quite what the species is I have no idea, will try and find out.
  13. Perhaps when the suckers were pulled up the root system relating to that section of the canopy was damaged. The Active flow system disrupted? Just a theory?
  14. Hi Folks I was having a discussion with someone earlier who stated that their manager allowed them to use a powered pole pruner from within the canopy?? just got me thinking is this common practice? their argument being that its just a chainsaw on a stick:confused1: any feedback would be very welcome Dave
  15. Thanks Ben have been in contact with a stihl rep since posting, they recommend applying the break at approx half chain speed to check system works without placing undue strain on the saw components. Dave
  16. Hi Folks Can anyone confirm if the chainbreak test requirements for the NPTC now remove the requirement for the full throttle test. I have heard it has been replaced by asking the candidate to apply the chain break at tick over and throttle the machine to check for correct break function?? Sorry to ask such a basic question Dave
  17. Hi Folks I'm currently teaching a unit on vta and would be intrested to compare different companies take on the data they collect. I realise its a bit cheeky but if anyone is willing to allow me to have an electronic version of the form/s they use it would be of great use to my learners. The forms would only be used for comparision work and not used by ourselves to undertake surveying jobs. thanking you in advance for any assistance. Kindest wishes Dave
  18. Riseholme College is currently looking for suitable candidates to carry out part-time instruction for level 2&3 Forestry and Arboricultural students. No formal teaching qualification will be required but you must have industry experience, a clear commitment to health and safety procedures and valid competency awards. More than one post may be available, selected persons would require to undertake a CRB check prior to employment. Regards Dave
