  1. I would like to thank everyone for easing my concerns , its a comfort to know that a hernia may not affect me as much as i initially thought. Some excellent advice from those in the know(Thanks guys) luckily i'm not overweight but i will certanly concentrate more on improving my core strength from now on. Due to see a surgeon in a couple of weeks so i'll know what is to become of me shortly? Thanks again regards Dave
  2. Hi Craker i was just driving into work, the hernia must have already been there, i suppose my intestine just dropped through the tear? it was excruciating and how the hell i got to work i'll never know..one things for sure the air in my car was a bit blue as i was stuck in rush hour traffic, good job the wife and boy where somewhere else? Regards Dave
  3. Thanks David, sorry for the late reply spent most of yesterday in bed? no idea what or when caused the hernia i may have had it for months or even years. Having a five year old son who constantly "needs" to sit on my sholders probably has a high likelyhood of being the main cause?one things for sure i have never felt pain quite as bad before so need to reduce physical exertion for a while? regards Dave
  4. got taken to hospital tuesday morning i think my manager almost fainted when i burst through his door crippled over and screaming in pain like a banshe.turns out i had developed a hernia i didnt know i had which strangulated part of my intestines.luckily i work with some top notch coleauges and serious complications where avoided just ended up with a painful groin and severely bruised nuts.obviously this will need surgery but i am now concerned if it will affect my ability to climb.not being able to sleep due to the constant ache in my man spuds tends to be a bit of downer too.anyone else had the pleasure of mother nature reminding them their not 20 anymore.......ok nearer 44 regards dave

  6. Hi folks Just hoping for some good advice? we have several large multistemed Cordylines on campus which have been decimated by the cold weather:thumbdown:. the plants in question are about 10 years old so we dont want to lose their impact on the grounds unless its too late. Thought about removing damaged stems and sealing the exposed ends with wax to see if their are any dormant buds further down the branching framework which woluld be stimulated into growth ? Has anyone got similar problems or has anyone had previous experience of rejuvinating Cordylines? regards Dave
  7. Think that must be a natural take on approach grafting, the "live" hanger is plugged into the vascular system of the main tree keeping it alive. I would suggest if you leave the crossing branches of any woody plant long enough to fuse a similar phenomena would be easy to replicate? Dave
  8. Check out A guide to good climbing practice available from the following link..as Rob states supporting your weight off both side rings is considered bad practice when using an ajustable lanyard as the main attachment when advancing your main anchor point. 11. Hi Folks Is anyone aware of any incorrect way that you could use a lanyard to prevent pendulum impact. Always thought that as a supplementary aid to prevent injury that you could use it either through the main bridge or side rings; using either the provided carabina or snap lock, am I being thick??? regards Dave
  12. You have my empathy and congratulations in equal measure hope baby and mother are ok Dave

  19. Watcha chris sounds like the police could be barking up the wrong tree, suspect the comment was made by a member of special branch regards Dave
  20. The aphid is covered in wax which makes it appear to be a whitefly it is endemic to beech and is called beech aphid aka Phylapsis fagi. It overwinters in the leaf buds and can in extreme circumstances cause defoliation. would have to be a major infestation to kill the tree.
  21. Try Google Books ...some info is just snippet veiw but can be used as a thread starter..just found several entries (dont know if they are relevant) by searching for Arboriculture accident case study. Dave
  22. Intresting...where is Blandford..is it down south? never seen wooly aphid on ash, they do get ash leaf curling wooly aphid in the states..wonder if its another exotic that will run trees ragged??
  23. You can download a clinometer app free for your ipod, just need a tape measure to finish the job. I also remember being shown how to establish height by using a stick and pacing, can be pretty accurate too if you calibrate your stride?
