  4. I always use MHORT after my name as well as Bsc unfortunatley people soon figure out it means Bronze Swiming Certificate, but i'm sticking with it? Dave
  5. Hi Folks Has anyone tried to distinguish the difference between ameliorants and soil conditioners when used in the context of tree planting? always assumed that an ameliorant was an inorganic substance such as leca, perlite, vermiculite or sand used to improve the infiltration rate of the upper root zone in sports turf settings? Would I be right in assuming soil conditioners would be organic substances such as peat, composted leaves, sewage cake etc which would improve the colloidal properties of the back fill in planting pits? Which catagory would mycorrhizal fungi introduced to the rootzone fall into? sorry to ask such geeky questions but no one here has a positive answer. cheers Dave:thumbup:
  6. Apparently your body cannot store energy generated from alcohol, its the calories you eat either before you drink, or the crisps and kebabs you consume as the munchies hit home. your body will consume the calories from alcohol in preference to other sources which will be layed down as fat. I,m 43 and had the same waist expansion problem...cured by 30mins every other night on the spin bike..initially helped me to lose weight quite quickly..only downside is you need a drink after youve done a hard session on the bike cos it kills your knee joints, hang on that s a bit of an oxymoron...any way works for me Dave
  7. Good call Bolt ...guess the vanishing guy rope I missed would give it away ..i'm so gullible:blushing:

  9. Sorry about the metaphore but couldnt resist ...perhaps someone could think of a better caption. have fun DAVE:thumbup1:
  10. Hi Folks ...got thinking about growth rings in temperate tree species being affected by seasonality. Suddenly occured to me that trees growing in desert conditions where there may be many years without rain may only produce rings during times of plenty? hence dendrochronology used to establish the age of the tree would need to be adapted for climate? is this also true for tropical species that are not affected by seasonal variation? do they have reduced definition between summer and winterwood or no definition at all?? sorry must get a life? any responses (polite) welcome Dave:thumbup:
  11. Cheers Rupe, Makes me rather ashamed that I thought I was being totally fobed off, but on the positive side makes me feel a bit more friendly towards my colleauge..also shows how usefull this forum is when trying to clear up issues:thumbup: Dave
  12. Couldnt agree more, someone had nicked the shackle off the winch in the first place so they could carryout their own job with scant regard to mine. I work for a large organisation where each dept should support the other..we have a large stock of shackles used for lifting and couldnt see why pulling forces would overload or make LOLER certification void? Dave:thumbup1:
  13. Just been looking for a shackle to attach to our drum winch and was told by a senior member of staff that I could not use his serial numbered LOLER checked shackles for pulling loads. Apparently this would destroy their lifting capacity and thus make their LOLER certification void resulting in him throwing the shackle away:001_huh:. Im assuming that this was just his way of messing up my day:confused1:or am I missing something?? Dave(not happy)
  14. Not trying to be a scare-monger but I remember reading that tetanus bacteria can be driven into a thorn wound, also had many students over the years who have developed mild blood poisioning from blackthorn splinters, so get checked out littletree. Also remember reading that there are drawing ointments such as ichthammol which can be put on the skin to entice the little blighters out; as far as I can remember many have antibacterial properties too?may be worth a try:001_smile: get better soon Dave

  19. Hi MonkeyD sorry for the long winded response(yawn)..been off work due to a bad reaction to Co-codamol tablets..nasty things...I work for the University of Lincoln, at their Riseholme campus. love the job shame about all the paperwork that goes with teaching?? regards Dave
  20. [ How's the Major & it's compatriots fairing ? It's been a long time since I was there. Any interesting Veteran works going on? . Hi MonkeyD It is a brilliant site to try and inspire the value of deadwood and veteran trees to the next generation of arbs:thumbup: I have noticed that there is some monolith pruning carried out in various locations in the woodland, for example in the visitors centre and also near the Major oak...fits in so well its hard to notice? took a pair of binoculars last time we visited, found this helped to establish what bracing work and cavity treatments had gone on in the past..obviously you get a totally different perspective of the Major oak which is well worth the effort.hard to belive the tree is over 1000 yrs old ...mind you how long it would survive without its associated ironwork is anyones guess? regards Dave:thumbup1:
  21. Hi folks I thought it may be intresting to compare some of MonkeyD's great artificial monoliths with one I spotted in Sherwood Forest:thumbup:

  25. Hi Folks I'm intrested to know if any of you have had much experience of dealing with the breakdown and disposal of trees affected with Phytophthora ramorum. looking at the Forestry Commision site there seem to be major issues relating to the establishment of boundaries to avoid cross contamination via the spread of spores and contaminated soil, or have i got it all wrong?? appreciate any feedback Dave You live and learn. At any rate, you live. Douglas Adams
