    Soil samples

What event, or who, has requested the sample, and why? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  2. Apparently my copy is AWOL, I did find my Bridgeman book and a couple of other gems though so it wasn't completely wasted time. Sorry, down to you now bttgaz... Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  3. I think RobArb was working on one- quite a task I reckon! Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  4. Im leaning towards my initial gut feeling of Aa too. I don't see a great many around here, and think I've not seen one at bud burst before. Cheers all Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  5. Tree of heaven is what my gut said, but the big buds have made me question it... Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  6. Bark similar to Norway maple at glance. I believe Paulownia has hollow pith, and opposite leaves? This had alternate buds and leave scars. Also you can see in a pic above a few inches on the tips of some branches had shrivelled and died. It's one I know I have seen before, but not often. I think the stage of bud burst is confusing me! In winter twig mode or full leaf I'm sure it would be easier Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  7. The surface looks like it has been broken, rather than cut like you'd expect from a woody sphearoblast. And are the larvae inside the white bits?! Certainly doesn't look like the innards of any sphearoblast I've seen. A gall of some sort perhaps? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  8. Any ideas? I can't quite place it. Big buds and leaf scars, smell slightly sweet, solid pith in the twigs. Cheers all Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  9. Suncream? I think she ate it... Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  10. Good luck getting my wife in bikini, let alone a photo of it! Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  11. Nice find David Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  12. Nice one (though they do stew well), had this friendly fellow following me (in a school of all places) today, felt a little guilty going home to roast lamb! Of all of them, he never left my side, bit odd really Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  13. Good question. Slice it open! Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app

    tree id

Not a lot to go on there, Catalpa? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  15. Looks like exudates from within the tree. Did it have any odour, was it fluid or crusty? Possible indicator of Armillaria infection, hows the condition/vitality of the crown (particularly in line with the 'oily stuff/flat spot')? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  16. Indeed, I wonder when the text books will agree with general observations? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  17. Currently reading through my nice new copy of fungal strategies of wood decay in trees and note, on p.48 s3.2.2.3, the suggestion that I.d only colonizes up to 15cm above ground level. Also that damaged trees often collapse, with roots breaking 30-60cm from the stem. I know of only one area near me where this fungi is prevalent, but many (now urban) oaks host it. Obviously there are a few at Hatfield too, though I've only visited twice. I haven't seen one tree with it collapse, and many of them have exhibited decay and or fruiting up to 2m height. With this book being over a decade old, I wonder if there is new and differing research on this fungi; and what others general experience and observations are? 18. Well good luck to them. I was mighty tempted to ask for more info myself, but it wasn't a great time for me to take on more responsibility. Hope oz is all you hope for Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  19. Not a great image, but looks like a good candidate for Ascocoryne sarcoides. Fairly common on cut stumps of hardwoods... Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  20. Hmm, I haven't seen the dictionary since I moved house 3yrs ago. I'm certain it's in a box somewhere, I'll have to dig a little deeper tomorrow. I suspect it will be with a copy of PH Bridgemans Tree Surgery which I've thought about selling, so there's extra incentive for me to find it! Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app

    Gps

Might get an old hp pocket pc for that, keep an eye on eBay. Gps ok for safety surveys, for 5837s you'd want a topo with trees marked already. A couple of threads on this somewhere, try a site search... Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  22. I have it in a box somewhere, I'll try and dig it out later... Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  23. The reindeer certainly don't filter out the psychoactive compounds. I believe that ingesting the urine of reindeer that have consumed Amanita muscaria is just one way of avoiding the unpleasant/toxic effects of ibotenic acid while experiencing the desired ones of the psychoactive muscimol. There are less unpleasant ways of safely getting 'high'! Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  24. I have heard the surname Walker comes from the historic job of walking human urine into wool to remove oils and soften it. Not sure if it's true. The Viking thing is berserkers, eating fly agarics before battle. However, I think it's a myth... Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
  25. Seems it's only available from Amazon, maybe this is why... The print quality is a bit shabby, almost like it's all photocopied. Are the earlier versions good quality similar to, say, diagnosis of ill health in trees? Sent from my GT-I9100 using Arbtalk mobile app
