  1. There is a web link on the National Forest website for local contractors but its not promoted, weve been on it for years and have never had one enquiry. We did win a tender a few years back to thin out some woods that they had bought and are now activeley managing, and they did ask local owners to come and have a tour of the woods and to see us working. Again this led to no further work. We do get a few enquiries from the National Forest Wood fair though this is annually. The only work we see happening is rides being mowed - and that is by larger companies from outside the area. There is some work coming up with new cycle trails being put in (i was delivering logs to the head of the Forest) and she told me about this . I dont know if the tree works for this are up for tender or the whole works are being lumped together with the building works - shame if it does!
  2. Dont worry winters on the way - well i found this on Martins Money Saving Website Winter 2011-2012. Very bad weather prediction -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not sure the most suitable MSE forum section to put this under, but this would be one of them.... Exacta Weather, a non-profit organisation of meteorlogical experts who've successfully predicted the last two harsh winters, are stating, with very little ambiguity, that Winter 2011-2012 could be a record-breaker. Prolonged sub-zero conditions and extreme snowfall is predicted by James Madden, longe range meteorological expert at Exacta. He strongly advises on taking precautionary measures in the coming months. Apologies for starting a thread like this during the holiday season, but Exacta are well regarded across the motoring organisations and basically have been highly accurate so far. As stated above, they're a non-profit organisation, so no business interests behind their predictions. Google them. I'll certainly be investing in winter tyres this year. Forum administrators - if you see fit, post this thread in other sections - travel, heating costs, etc.
  3. Weve done virtually nothing compared to last year probably 2 loads a week, mind you doesnt help when the we are being constantly undercut by others
  4. Best of luck weve been trying for years to get similar work - it all seems to be carried out by the voluntry secter or students. Its a shame as the forest is crying out for work to be done as the plots are getting out of control and the timber that comes out is not the best of qualities. The whole reason the location was chosen for the forest was to try and grow woods and local employment after years of scarring from mining - it seems to have failed on both counts
  5. Wow want one - doesnt even cough at the size of the timber
  6. He was tops he delivered our small forwarder and winch to the midlands
  7. Ultimate Knobhead - in a rush few years back picked up what i thought was 2 stroke in 20 litre can , filled up 4 saws with it went felling - plumes of smoke and lots of swearing later realised id picked up the red diesel can
  8. I know what you mean round us it seems to be under cutting our prices that is the favourite sport , one stated 1 metre cube vented bags of seasoned hardwood at £45 (we are at £75) so i emailed him for bulk price for 20 cube- awaiting result with £ signs in my eyes!

  15. Really worried about our stack. We felled alot of hardwood approx 18 months ago its a sycamore/ ash/oak/ elm mix and its been sat seasoning since we felled it in a prime location with the wind blowing through it. When it was delivered the elm which has dutch elm disease was stacked on top of part of the stack, the wood underneath it now has loads of what appear to be active woodworm in it. Question is is it woodworm or dutch elm beetle (it has only gone in bark deep) and how will this affect future sales. We are in the process of seperating affected area from rest of stack, its such a shame as its top grade firewood - what would you do?
