  2. I'll admit to being a bit of a TW basher. I think the design of the flywheel bearngs is awful and I had to change the blades every 8 hours BUT apart from that I must admit I had 6 years trouble free use out of mine, Keeping the blades sharp and not overdoing the big stuff. It was CH25 and was so easy to push about and small enough and low enough to go just about anywhere. Great little machine - it was only when I saw a Greenmech in action I realised there are better (for me anyway) 6 inch machines out there also under 750 KG. It's like everything else in life, its opinions. They are 'good' - a bit like landrovers - treat them carefully they will last better.
  3. Why not insure tippers? From my old days in insurance their worry is that an open back truck could have ANYTHING chucked into it (not necessarily by the owner/driver) so it could end up being driven through the town centre spreading asbestos dust or whatever. You will also find that skip lorries are bad news to insure. The fleet policy that my old company operated would not cover a fleet if they had ANY skip lorries at all. Once again its the old 'theres a faint chance' excuse against common sense. I'm so glad I got out of that rat-race industry.

  5. After ruining two MS200s a few years back we have a fixed procedure for fuel mix. 1. Put in the 2 stroke oil 2. Rinse the measuring jug with petrol and tip into the can 3. Add about another pint of petrol then shake the fuel container vigorously 4. Fill the container then re-shake. When you've done the soggy jug with a hint of red oil confirms it was done properly as does the redish foamy mix. We usually get someone to witness the mixing too. Sad and paranoid but saves big expense
  6. I use a 110 landy with full boarded roof rack. Good platform for accessible hedges. Winch on front for 'hekping' with awkward felling/lowering and a cooker/sink inside for remote cooking/brewing. I also have a peugeot expert 'wheelchair' van which is perfect for loading the stump grinders. It does 40+ mpg. Both are great support vehicles
  7. There will be different answers from different people. Personally I would say However long its been dead - it's the condition of it on the day you would climb. What killed it? How brittle is it? How high would you need to climb? Could it be felled? can you get a crane in? Is there a good tree nearby you could use for access? Some people say if a tree is standing after some stong winds it MUST be able to take a climber on a mild day. You could try throwing a rope around a branch slightly smaller than ones you would use while climbing then get two of you to yo yo on the end of the rope. Only climb if YOU are CERTAIN its safe to do so. Hopefully others may be able to offer other rules of thumb to help
  8. What if someone you know was to see you in that? I'm no fashion guru but I'd rather have tired arms - and carrying that in the truck.... I'll assume this is a joke (unless I see these at the arb show).
  9. Thats a sensible choice - like Le Sanglier said. We all dislike Stihl at the moment but its gotta be worth getting what you can out of your kit - then move over to another brand. I thought it very honourable that there was not a rush for your saws when you first posted. Thats the sort of thing that makes this a great forum.

  12. I'm planning to go up for the Friday evening festivities and utilise my defender RV (the very one in my avatar). Hopefully put a few faces to names, have a fun time and buy some stuff.

  16. Lots of errors in the design, but in fainess they are not forestry bods and it was all for TV dumbo viewers. If you take a bunch of 'enthusiasts' with no industry knowledge and give the, a less than ideal start point what can you expect? The one with the chainsaw would have been quite good if they had a swivel so it could be used to fell as well, and a ram to push the trees the right way. I agree the disregard of safety was atrocious - how close were they standing to that circular saw FFS??? Lucky they are all still in one piece
  17. I don't remember so it was probably too much. Like so many teenage japes it seemed like a great idea at the time.
  18. I once felled a 4 inch diameter conifer near the new forest - with a bread knife. It was to become a Christmas tree at our student flat (1975 I think). Took bloody ages and there was no hinge - some time before I took CS31 etc.
  19. You mention blunt chain and stumps in the same post.... Was it blunt when you actually started? Are you certain the chain isn't too tight? Really needs to be looked at - hard to describe some of the issues here. Maybe take it back to the supplier.
  20. Bulls eye!!! There was an article in one of the Arb mags a few years back - It's title was 'Dont make your last cut your last cut' I can't recall the exact figures but the massive majority of mis-haps occur in the last hour. Getting tired, maybe someone has started putting the kit away, customer asks for one more thing so you improvise rather than get the proper kit out, maybe work off the ladder etc.etc. then BANG! I'm sure the HSE produced some scary stats on it. The problem is, whenever you stop work there must be a LAST hour. It just depends how knackered you are for that last hour??? We've all gotta get the job done but remember theres more jobs to do tomorrow as well - not to mention wife and kids waiting at home. Don't make them wait too long! Be safe out there.
  21. Why not contact the Insurance Ombudsman . Insurers are trying to make money. If they can fob you off with white lies and you accept it they are laughing. You will often get told lies (oh yes you do) by ill informed representatives, or go-betweens who dont want to lose their commiossion if a policy is cancelled. Usually the mention of the ombudsman can lead to the company suddenly remembering that they CAN refund your premium, especially if THEY decide you are not insurable as a result of an oversight on their part at renewal time. I have worked for insurance companies in the past (IT and business areas) and they have been known to say things which could be mis-interpreted - allegedly.
  22. If the oil filler cap is a yellow plastic one its a 200 or 300 tdi (if aux belt has about 6 or 7 ribs along its length its a 300). If the filler cap looks like an old piece of dented tin it'll be a 19j engine. If its a 19j just walk away from it.
  23. Bulkhead (footwells, corners below windscreen), chassis - especially the rear, steering wobble (see any LR forum) how well was the conversion done? Fuel filter mount, radiator mounts, pipe extensions, exhaust downpipe. These will give clues to the way its been looked after and quality of conversion. loads more to think about - maybe check on a LR forum.
  24. It's amazing how many people try to sell a heap of cr@p explaining that it is perfect except for ...... which will be easy and cheap to sort out - if that is so why don't they fix it? All the saws on ebay that just need a new plug/filter and it'll (probably) be fine. Ha ha ha. I'd spend my time looking at something that works. Being a land rover there will be a few things to spend your money on anyway. I agree with other suggestions that 200 tdis and 300 tdis (pre fly by wire) are easier to work on - just make sure you know what you are buying and don't take the sellers word that it's an easy/cheap fix (so why hasn't he fixed it then???)
