  1. Just because you apply to do something to a tree doesn't mean you HAVE to do what is approved. You can do 'up to' what is approved and not more. The duration of the approval can be 12 or 24 months (not sure what criteria they use but I get both from our LA). No reason not to do it in stages. If you work in Ferring you will be hassled by Mr and MRS Nothing-Better-To-Do every time you go near a tree. No doubt other areas have a similar reputation.

    Charge what you like. We all have an amount in mind, how honest we are with each other (on a forum which is often used by vearious people from the same companies) is a matter of opinion. heres another way to think about it.... You say you split the dosh 50/50 with your 'tasks as discussed at the start of each job' person. If he is happy with £75 (his half of the £150) but you charge more than £150 to cover the other costs highlighted in this thread - he will still receive the same decent dosh for decent work but you will be covering the other costs. Don't be ashamed to charge the right amount. Some days, after expenses, I take home less than my rake monkey. Other days I take home a lot more than her, but when my chipper needed £800 spending on it I didn't ask her to contribute. Do your own maths and be proud of your business - gonads to the trolls, the Audi drivers and the 'you can only be a man in a Unimog' brigade.

  5. Now on a different note if you seen a conifer hedge that needed faced or topped would you knock on the door or leave it. What about maybe printing off a simple headed letter offering your services, popping it in an envelope and sticking it through the door, not quite junk mail, or a plain old leaflet drop? It's something some people wouldn't do - others would. If you get a job out of it then it worked. The problem is the stigma that some people attach to 'tradesmen' who knock on doors. It isn't something I believe in so I can't comment on the success rate. I tried a leaflet drop once, many years ago and found it was a waste of time.
  6. Funny what people make when they are talking to their 'mates' in the pub. Possibly a touch more than they make when they are talking to strangers, and a hell of a lot more than when they talk to the tax man. If they are remotely like the Paul Whitehouse 'geyser' character just ignore what they claim and, like someone said previously, be confident with the figure you quote.

  8. The problem is actually subtly different. This was described to me by a friend who works on the signalling for railtrack. Stick with me I'll do the best I can to recall it accurately. The modern signalling system works out where the trains are based on the the resistance from a given point, along one rail, through the axle of the train then back down the other rail. The naughty leaves act as an insulator so the resistance is higher, this gives the monitoring system a false reading of higher resistance - thus suggesting the train is further from the sensor than it really is. The reality is that a heavy leaf fall means they dont know PRECISELY where the trains are. They are just trying to be too clever.
  9. Probably not worth the aggro given the price of the available 'swivellers' on the market. it would also mean carrying and continually moving the home made device. Mind you, it could save a few quid.
  10. One line of thought is that anyone who plants a bomb or fires indiscriminently is carrying out an act of war. If they are not wearing a military uniform they are, in effect, a spy. If they are deemed to be murdering spies I wonder what sort of treatment they could then expect.
  11. Spot on! There was a sign in one of the arb magazines years ago. The article concluded that a huge majority of accidents occur at or near the end of the day. It read - Dont make your last cut your last cut!
  12. Chris Bonnington once said the hardest thing he ever did was to turn round and go back down when the conditions didn't feel right. That way you always get another chance. Push too hard and you may never have another chance. We have a motto - If you find yourself thinking 'I hope.....' then stop. Re arrange the method so that you are 110% certain. Who benefits if you push too far?
  13. Anyone got a low mileage, newish, arb bodied truck with lockers, winch, hiab etc. with a massive payload and plenty of power? Preferably ladder racks and barn doors too. Must have full service history and years MOT. Oh yeah, and you must be willing to deliver it to Sussex for free. Mustn't be too expensive as it is only for tree work. Willing to pay over £1,000 for the right vehicle.

  16. The real scary thing about the 'flywheel-winching' scenario is that 99% of the safety stop bars would do absolutely nothing as the poor sod on the rope hurtles towards the machine. Groundsmen- are you all watching? I must admit I showed that video to all my guys this morning. Got quite a reaction.

  19. I have two Echo 265 long trimmers. One runs perfectly, but the other.... Starts easily, will tick over all day but doesnt want to rev up. When you squeeze the throttle it splutters then cuts out. It will start fine when cold, and re-start perfectly when hot. So far I've checked the compression (150 psi) Made sure the throttle cable is opening the carb Tried it without the air filter Removed the exhaust and the pot and piston don't look scored. I've checked the fuel intake line for leaks (none found) The breather seems Ok - I tried running it with the fuel cap loosened. I've taken the carb off, removed the cap over the hi adjuster and removed/cleaned the hi jet (no crud visible). I've tried adjusting the hi adjusted but no joy. I took the carb apart and all diaphrams seem OK. I even disconnected the cutter in case it was offering resistance. I just can't get the bugger to rev up - -aaargh Any suggestions what else to check?
  20. If there was a sure-fire formula all quotes would be the same. No intention to sound negative, you will find loads of threads on here which suggest anything from time X Hourly rate to 'experience is everything'. If you are still at college and you 'eventually' want to go SE then just watch and learn from others over the years. Then, grasshopper, it will be time for you to leave the temple. (If you are not an old git like me you'll have to google that last quote). Good luck and enjoy your work.
  21. John, If it's not too late... Halfords are doing a discount on their Erde trailers, you gotta check them out, they are competitively priced, can carry a load, and they are light.
  22. You will alter aspects of the suspension/steering geometry. The purists will suggest you need to insert spacers in the prop shafts as they are effectively longer (bigger distance from transfer box to diff) and it would benefit from different angled radius arms. If you only increase the height by an inch or two and dont want to enter competitions you will probably be OK

  24. Pretty common round here - its the novelty of finding another one thats going. I sometimes wave to Audi and BMW drivers, though not usually with all fingers
