  1. Wasn't there a thread on here a couple of years ago when someone made a really amazing machine with an elongated cutting wheel - very well engineered iirc. We just need someone with more computer skill than me to put up a link and help out.
  2. The Lifans seem too cheap to be any good???but I've no experience to confirm that. I would prefer a Honda engine as the current one has done well for me.
  3. Not the best day today, but you gotta laugh... Managed to destroy the engine on the little Rayco stumpy Absolutely no compression, interesting rattling sounds on crankshaft. It's done 12 years so I can't complain. Does anyone have a 390cc honda engine they want to sell? It's the 13hp one with a 1 inch diameter output shaft. I don't mind travelling and paying sensible money if anyone has one. Even a spare generator or water pump which can be split would be OK. Thanks
  4. Please ignore that last message - I mis-read your message. Apologies.
  5. I assume you mean process 4-5 mtrs of brushwood per hour and not 'produce 4-5 mtrs of chips'?
  6. Mick, Do I assume that is French for 'The price, compared to the competitors prices explains it all'
  7. The article (small ad, really)was in the pro-arb magazine. I'll see what I can find on the webbythingand put a link up. https://www.toro.com/en/professional-contractor/tree-care/stx-38-stump-grinder
  8. Bermp! - as Peter Sellers would have said. Anyone even seen one on a demo - just seems to be 'very low' price for a 38HP beast. How much of the power is used up by the hydraulic drive over the old 'belt' system? Anyone?..........
  9. That sounds like a fun time to me. I really liked the Rab character, and Gregor Fisher is so good at it. Nice one!
  10. Does your mummy know you are using her computer?
  11. Was that the 26hp or the 38 hp Toro? (sorry for the slow reply - but I've only just seen the Toro advertised)
  12. I've just received this month's copy of Pro-arb and in it theres a section on stump grinders. There is a 38hp tracked offering from Toro which is allegedly £14,500 +VAT. Seems like a lot of machine for the money so..... Anyone got any experience of these (or the older 26HP version) and what the spares/support is like?
  13. Aaaargh, nooooooooo. You cannot do that! Arb trolleys are a gift from God - they must be worshipped! We cannot work without them.
  14. I don't charge anything even for last minute cancellations, never have and never will. My terms are not written down anywhere - does that mean I am still breaking the LAW? Unlike builders and the like we do not incur any costs before we turn up (with the exception of planting) so I have never had any issues. As Gary Prentice (IIRC) said adding this clause, or bringing it to the attention of a client would confuse most of them. I suspect the big commercial clients would be aware anyway. I recon it is some communist plot to weaken our economy and let the Eastern Europeans overtake our businesses. Not really.
  15. I was under the impression that English law requires an offer, and an acceptance of that offer, for a contract to exist (as long as the goods/services are not, in themselves, illegal). There seems to be a truck load of complication/fear/anxiety/bollox surrounding legal issues which seems to suit only one profession (and it's not arborists). I, for one, am going to carry on as before (too old to evolve anyway!) I hope they have wifi in prison, then I can keep in touch.
  16. Why is there a need for a cooling off period? If I quote and they accept (As Mick D said) they can cancel up to the last minute anyway. If I do the job sooner than 14 days (ooh it's really urgent) they are happy and they pay up. I can only think that such a clause would make the odd 'mind-changer' feel less guilty about cancelling. If I had a tradesman issue me a cooling off clause I would wonder why, how many times, and for what reasons it was necessary.
  17. Isn't the cooling off period in effect right up to the day you do the work. If they cancel between quote and job its not really worth worrying about. As long as you have some 'drop-in anytime' jobs to fill in the day I just recon I'm better off without working for people who operate like that.
  18. Bloody cheek, we were just reducing the radial spread!
  19. Maybe I'm behind the times with all the management jargon these days. I recently had a Tree Maintenance flyer through my door. Whilst I admire the effort people put in to these things I found myself wondering if it's just me being a cynical old fart or what?? Apert from offering Topping and Crowning as main services it also offered a 'cooling off period if required' I just can't see how that works and how it would make a potential customer think...'These are the guys for me' It makes as much sense as a second-hand coffin I once saw in a junk shop! Are we falling behind the times?
  20. Just tell them it'll all look nice for when the migrant processing centre is built nearby. There are some trees, walnut springs to mind, whose chippings are said to be bad for surrounding growth. Also some may claim that the toxic elements of laburnum or laurel are 'bad'. We take all our chippings to a registered recycling yard (where they are regularly tested by the environment agency) and I've not heard of any issues - there is no list of 'banned' species. Ask these 'Ferring-like' residents what they expect?
  21. Just do it - loads of guys on here must have modded their spots over the years. I suspect the H&S issue would be that the removal/folding down would need to require tools rather than just a spring bolt or the likes. I know theres loads of detail on the Interweb about the regs. I recon some sort of hinge with an internal step-down (to prevent crud cattching in the join) and a nut/bolt to hold it (could be replaced by a spring clip or R clip if you must) and away you go. Probably worth talking to an engineering bod to get the geometry right but it shouldn't be an issue (till it falls off and kills the local council rep).
  22. I had one but I lost it. Really!
  23. Landy defender crankshaft pulley bolts are massively torqued IIRC
  24. Spoons, good to see you thinking outside the box again! base - that stuff looks the bizz. Thanks folks
