  1. Saw this thread as i'm in the same situation as the Original post, needing a yard. I've been looking around local places to me and i know a few places that would be ideal for me to use, but how did you go from finding a place to then being able to buy? Did you rent first or just ask the Land owner from the start to buy it? I'm thinking about either phoning the owners or perhaps writing a letter if i can find their details. I would like to buy somewhere ideally, i'm just interested as to what worked for you? Cheers, James.
  2. Cheers, it certainly looks the business!
  3. Do you mind me asking how much that set you back and what model and add-ons you went for? I'm thinking about buying one similar to that but it soon adds up with the amount of extras you can have now!
  4. Whats the best way to prevent woodworm and rot?
  5. I'm looking at adding to my stockpile of milled oak this winter and wondered how long you can store it for before it starts to degrade in any way. At the moment all wood is stacked and stickered in a large barn. The barn is not open to the elements i.e roof and four walls so it doesn't get a lot of wind or sunlight in there. Will it be ok to keep the wood in there for a long period of time? I have a few long term projects for my wood so it may not get used for even 10years is this too long for it to be stored? All the wood is Oak, Any advice would be welcome, Cheers, James.
  6. Thanks for the reply, i might go and get a quote from them. I thought there would have been a "off the shelf item" you could buy though? I've seen a couple of transits around with them on and they look pretty standard.
  7. I'm getting a bit fed up of stuffing all our spare gear etc into the cab on my newish transit so to stop it getting to bad i thought i'd buy a tool box that fits under the tipper. So i'm just wondering if anyone knows the best place to buy one from? I'm in Basingstoke if that's any help! I've seen a few of the plastic ones which look quite good are there any other types you can buy? thanks in advance, James.
  8. Thats why i like the timberwolf, no need for extra trailer like with the cs100. Might look into getting a used one, i think they around 7.5k new
  9. Is that the timberwolf 18/100g? been thinking about getting one of those over a cs100 for a while but have yet to bite the bullet! How did you find it? Did it ever get jammed?

    Books

Could anyone recommend any books about milling? The drying the process choosing timber etc. Thinking up a Christmas list
  11. Interesting do you basically just cut the grass when "gardening". Its quite a broad term and i do a lot of commercial "gardening" or landscape maintenance and that involves everything from weeding, hegecutting and mowing. I think if i was just weeding borders i would have to charge a lot less!
  12. I brought these chisels: (the set of 6) Buy Tataki Nomi Chisels online at Rutlands.co.uk I brought them around a year ago and have been very pleased with them, not the best japanese chisels around, but after spending a lot of time researching/looking around this seemed a good buy for the money. You could spend an awful lot of money on chisels if you really wanted too!!!
  13. Do you have any dust extraction for when you use your metabo?
  14. The record is the other one i have been looking at but can't see what difference there is between that and the metabo and the record seems to be a good £100 more. Is it easy enough to convert it from planing to thicknessing? I know you have to move one of the tables to do this. My only other question is is it easy enough to take the legs of if i wanted to store it away somewhere?
  15. has anyone got a DEWALT D27300? They seem very similar to the metabo but are almost double the money and can't see why that is?
  16. That works out to be around the 6inch mark then? so i could comfortably put a 5inch post through the thicknesser then?
  17. Thanks for the info, do you know what the max capacity is for the metabos thicknesser and planer is please? I'm struggling to find this information. Also where did you buy yours from?
  18. Thanks for the info, i'm not to worried about not being able to do the 6x6 posts as i know someone with a large planer who could do that for me, its just smaller stuff i'd be using it for a lot of the time. I have a few 4x4 and 3x3 oak posts i would like to plane with it though. I was thinking along the lines of making a fence for the in and out table on the machine which was at 90 degrees to the table so once i have one surface flat as you described above i could rest this face against the fence and it should then come out at a perfect 90 degrees??? I hope that makes sense? Sorry for the all questions, i don't really want to buy something and then realise it won't do what i want! The metabo does look like a nice compact machine but i don't think it has a big enough capacity thicknesser fo 4x4" posts but i can't find the exact specs on that machine.
  19. Have you used it to straighten out posts as well? Is it difficult to make sure you get a decent 90degree angle without having a fence like on a planer or have you not had a problem with it? I presume the best way to do the posts would be just to feed the post through taking of a bit each time until the top edge is straight then turn the post 180degress put it through so then you would have two straight faces. Then repeat the process on the other two opposite faces. Have i got the right idea or have i missed something?
  20. I won't be using it for that size timber all the time, thats probably just the maximum size I will want to put through it. Do you know what the max size that can be put on the planer? And the maximum height and width that could be put through the thickneser? Does anyone know anything about the Dewalt D27300? Its a lot more money than the metabo though. I've heard great things about the Dewalt 733 thicknesser. The only thing is I presume if I buy that then i would need a planer anyway to get posts straight before they go through the thicknesser? (unless there is some sort of modification you can do to the 733?)
  21. I think its a woodmizer lt40 not 100% sure if that is the model they've got but Its definitely a woodmizer.
  22. Thought i'd resurrect this thread as would like to see how your getting on with the metabo? I have been looking at getting something along these lines for a while. I can't go for anything bigger because of limited space. What sort of wood will it take? The biggest i would want to use it for is maybe 6x6" posts, would that be asking a bit much of it? James.
  23. Cheers for the advice, i'd like to hopefully make a few large posts from both the oak and Beech (maybe 7x7") and then the rest can be dimensional timber 4x2 4x3 etc etc. I'm not sure the best way to mill the logs for posts though? Just take one out of the middle and work outwards with whats left? would it be best to quarter saw the rest of the timber into different thicknesses then dry it and cut it to the size i require as and when? That would hopefully avoid waste and to much movement when the wood drys.
  24. What Japanese saws do you have and where did you get them from please?
  25. Sorry for all the questions but i thought if i'm going to get it milled i may as well do it properly and make the most out of the wood!
