  1. Stop using palm oil and the 3rd world will cut down all the palm trees and grow something else to make a living. They are only doing what the first world has done over the last few centuries.
  2. Social media is available the world over, a bit slower in some parts of the world, but its there. How long do those supporting us accepting migrants think it will take before word gets all round the world that europe is a push over and a great place to be? At that point the thousands we have now will be millions from all over asia, the middle east and africa. No fence or barrier will stop crowds that big.
  3. You'll get all the COSHH assessment sheets from the manufacturers and then follow the manufacturers handling recomemdations. If you're using newish equipment just make sure its CE marked. Anything older or not CE marked then you'll need to do a specific assessment to make sure its safe.
  4. Brown paper bag over the intake will soon sort that
  5. Excel will do what you want if you set it up to do what you want. Once you've done it you can chop and change things as you want, which you may not be able to do with proprietry software.
  6. Why would I/we want or need to integrate into an alien culture/relgion/language in our home country? Sure if I chose to live in Syria I would definitely try my hardest to integrate as best I could, but I wouldnt expect any Syrian to integrate with my lifestyle in their home country.
  7. From the footage I've seen there dont seem to be that many poor frightened souls amongst them. The majority, not all, but the majority seem to be youngish blokes out to make a bigger buck than they can back home.
  8. Keep your head down, dont annoy anyone, keep it low key and get on with it. If no ones complaining keep it that way.
  9. Halfords professional range come with a lifetime warranty and can be bought individually or in sets.
  10. Couple of milk crates on the flat roof and a scaffold board from milk crates to the outhouse ridge. Sling a climbing rope over the roof and tie your self in. Job done
  11. If your suggesting an apprentice can work on a self employed basis whilst serving his time , thats highly unlikely to be legitimately possible! As an apprentice he doesnt yet know how to do the job so he would need his mentor to control how the work is done. The apprenticeship will be offered to him personally so he cant send a substitute. The apprenticeship will be for an agreed number of years so theres an obligation for work to be offered by the employer and to be undertaken by the employee. The 3 main tests for an employed relationship all passed= employed.
  12. If your lad is on the apprentice minimum wage rate, then the weekly wage payment will be below the £112 threshold where PAYE needs to operated. Any more than £112 then the guy hes working for will need to register for and operate PAYE. I sure there are ways your lad can have his wages " topped up"! Going self employed as an apprentice is a bit risky as there is no way he could argue with the revenue he fulfils the self employed tests- control, substitution, MOO!
  13. Its great firewood, bit sappy so watch how you handle it in the house. Its supposed to spit a bit on an open fire so maybe best in a woodburner.
  14. If you buy insurance online you can cancel within 7 days and only pay pro rata with no cancellation fees. If you only need a couple of weeks cover, that might be an option to do that 2 or 3 times.
  15. Be interested to know the solution???
  16. The electrical supply wattage should be stamped on the heater? Bit of a lash up but you could just wire a leisure battery in series with a fused supply from the vans battery. Connect the 12v fused supply from the van to the negative on the leisure battery and the positive on the leisure battery to the heater via a fuse. That'll put 24v on the heater. Fix the battery and cover the terminals securely or there'll be fireworks if the battery rolls around or gets the terminals shorted!!
  17. They showed the girl on the bike walking to school on the news this morning. The pavement was full of little kids walking with their parents. Most young kids on bikes have little clue about dealing with braking or judging a safe speed and I'm sure that girl on her bike could easily floor one of the other kids or the stabilisers on her bike break a small ankle. Theres a time and place for everything and a crowded pavement aint the place for learning to ride a bike. The copper did the right thing but probably did it with the wrong attitude.
  18. And there lies the problem- a track shared with pedestrians isnt a cycle path.
  19. £350 sounds like a bargain after some of the stories I've heard in the past.
  20. Complex or confusing they might be but your taking a big chance using cherry on the road if you dont know the rules and have the correct answers ready if the customs guys come knocking. Lots of stories about of big fines, assessed back duty and vehicle seizures!!
  21. If you have a read of Leaflet HSE40 it explains when EL insurance is and isnt required. If EL isnt required then the worker isnt an employee and is a BFSC and should carry their own PL insurance. Within the leaflet the HSE cover some of the tests for self employment the principle ones being lack of control and substitution. The problem is that the majority of "self employed" engagements dont include these rights so most of these engagements are very likely to be employment, necessitating the need for EL on the part of the employer. In this case the worker is actually employed rather self employed and the employer carries responsibility for the employed workers actions so would be very wise to carry PL insurance.
  22. Why would you want a claim made against your insurance when a self employed subby should have it? If you've engaged a climber on proper self employed terms then he is responsible and it should be him or his insurance that pays for any damage caused by his negligence. Its a different matter if the climber is an employee because the terms arent really self employed, such as when you control the how and when the work is done.
  23. When the job is done make sure you send the client a maintenance and inspection schedule so that any rot or corrosion that may lead to failure is picked up by the client. Could be- Inspect 3 monthly for damage and repair as necessary Inspect 3 monthly for loose fixings and resecure as necessary Inspect annually for rot and repair as necessary Inspect annually for corrosion and repair as necessary Preservative treat all timber every 4 years
  24. +1(maybe) You've already given him training and he still hasnt learnt. Putting him on a documented training course should help you avoid liability but an accident is still likely. If you dont get shut of him do a toolbox talk about ladder safety and get him to sign it. If you explain why you've got him to sign it maybe the penny will drop?
  25. Assitance with training may well be available to the lads themselves without you being involved- how many of your customers/clients help you with training? RAMS need to be in place but the lads should do these themselves if you want them to be self employed. You can help them with them and/or reveiw what they have done to make sure all reasonably forseeable risks are mitigated, but the lads should do them- your customers dont do them for you?
