  1. The CE mark (conformitee europeanne)confirms that a product meets with the legally enforceable essential health and safety requirements and thats your guarantee of safety. EN standards are optional standards that a manufacturer can use to demonstrate compliance with the mandatory ESHRs. CE marking is aimed at product safety, not free trade.
  2. Nods post was directed at CE marking and LOLER. Its the law that PPE is CE marked. So if the LOLER inspector passed a piece of kit without a CE mark and there was an accident due to kit failure the day after he passed it, what do you think his chances of not being sued AND getting locked up are?? Anyone passing kit without a CE mark is living on the edge.
  3. If you can show that the maintenance man has instructed you previously and they have subsequently paid, then the maintenance man has proven authority to instruct work. Speak to the maintenance man if you can and if he agrees he instructed the work then put that to the accounts dept. if they still wont pay and the maint guy is on side, then small claims.
  4. Really?? You honestly think CE marking and LOLER is an "onerous heep of crap".
  5. Nah! The CE mark is a statement that an item conforms to the EU mandatory essential health and safety requirements, ESHR. Theres no need to comply with any EN but a manufacturer/importer will have an uphill struggle to show compliance with the ESHRs, but not apply relevant ENs.
  6. Before CE came to be, you and I would need to understand 1000s of standards from all the European countries- which French standards would Petzl manufacture to? CE ensures a common set of essential health and safety requirements that makes it easy to buy stuff anywhere in Europe and know what your getting. Calling it a trade agreement is a tad off the mark.
  7. The periodic thorough inspection is the same as an MOT in that its only valid at the time of test. After that its the daily and weekly user inspections that ensure kit remains in serviceable condition.
  8. It might not be the response you were looking for I suspect Bumble is correct. Spring missing is a modification from the manufactures spec which carries CE certification. With a mod the CE certification is lost and kit shouldnt be used.
  9. Ok. Andybikes said hes self employed so wont be using PAYE tools which is what was confusing me.
  10. Just start using the name! You'll be doobop trading as Mega Tree Services or whatever the business name is. If you're starting a limited company like Mega Tree Services Limited, then thats a completely different thing and your probably best speaking to your accountant to check the ltd co is worth while.
  11. How does that work? If your on PAYE, tax and NI are deducted every time your paid anyway, so there would be no need for a CIS deduction?? Is this if you're working employed and self employed with different employers?
  12. No VAT due on salary or dividends drawn from a ltd co. You will have sole trader accounts to do for the fencing and a personal tax return showing profit from fencing together with salary and dividends from the ltd co and any other income.
  13. Nowt wrong with you staying as a VAT registered soletrader as the Ltd co is a separate entity. Two sets of accounts to do. As your fencing work is VAT registered I cant see the VAT man being bothered how close the business activities are, because VAT is being collected on all sales. If your fencing wasnt VAT registered then VAT man is likely to be interested in how close the businesses are as you could be routing VATable work through the non VATable sole trading.
  14. Keep the record keeping simple but definitely do it if you've lads working for you. Its definitely not a new thing. If you dont keep the records life is so much more difficult if theres an injury due to equipment failure- how do you prove you were doing the checks? Its the same with weekly checks on climbing/rigging gear all should be documented on a simple check sheet. The same with ladders, saws, chipper etc. Once you've got the checks on a tick sheet shouldnt take more than 15 mins a week to run through a crews gear
  15. Maybe worth keeping a ring binder in the cab with a blank tick sheet for the checks. Record keeping is a bit more important if you've got lads working for you using the tipper- its part of your defence if owt goes wrong!!
  16. HSE say tippers are exempt from LOLER. As work equipment they are likely to need an inspection but you could do that your self by following the manufacturers maintenance advice and just keep a diary of when you checked things. Pretty sure it doesnt matter whether the users are employed, self employed or business owners, its still work equipment.
  17. For the single axle trailer, wont your payload be 800kg? 1200kg max towing weight less 400kg trailer weight= 800kg.
  18. Absolutely. Definitely speak to the neighbour and hopefully agree a productive way of working from their side and where they want the brash putting.
  19. There may lie the problem- all of the tracks round our way are green ways and not cycle tracks. You cant do 20-25 mph and mix that speed with walkers, dogs and little kids on bikes with stabilisers. Some real dicks riding bikes round our way. I'm a regular cyclist BTW.
  20. I think we're getting terminology mixed up. The motor circuit breaker I'm taliking about isnt a type D minature circuit breaker. Its a combined instantaneous and overload trip and is specifically intended to protect motors from short circuit and overload. Nothing like a household MCB as in minature circuit breaker. Typically a telemech GV2 or Siemens 3RV
  21. Your probably right about the std motor protection, but a properly sized motor circuit breaker will fully protect the motor against short circuit/locked rotor AND gradual thermal overload. Quick search on fleabay and theyre about £25-30 which aint alot to save your motor and associated downtime.
  22. Thats if you are using household MCBs and veiw your motor as consumable!! If you value your motor use a proper motor circuit breaker that will protect both the motor and cable with thermal and magnetic trips.
