  1. Which race have you been giving a hard time?
  2. The PV FIT rate is 12.5p til end Dec and then 12p til end if March/April. It was scheduled to drop to next to nowt at end of Dec but seems to have had a stay of execution for a few months. Whether the recent Paris climate summit will affect the rates is yet to be seen but at current rates a PV array should still give a 10% return over the 20 years of payments
  3. Thats the set up we have but if PV FITs continue it may be a more efficient installation to spend your money on additional PV capacity rather than solar thermal. You can then use surplus electric to heat the hot water using an Immersun diverter and get additional FIT payments for the extra generating capacity. The RHI payments on the solar thermal are quite low relative to the PV FIT payments.
  4. Does the 300l store enough heat to be able to heat the house the morning after the stove has heated the store? I was under the impression that you need 2-3000l to store enough heat for CH the day after having run the wood burner.
  5. Depends on what your goals are as to what you choose to do. If its eco and top efficiency then forget the woodburner and go for a log or pellet boiler or a heat pump. A green roof is good but you'll need ground mounted solar panels which will be outside of your house design. For a 4 bed house you'll produce alot of waste water and be emptying the cess pit every few weeks. Maybe better to have a septic tank with the outfall running through a reed bed? For details on any green building concepts, have a look on the greenbuildingforum.co.uk for the latest thinking.
  6. If you've got a tractor have a look at a McConnel sliding table saw. I run one off the back of a DB880 and its way faster than a chainsaw for chopping up longer lengths of wood up to 10-12" diameter. They come with a parallel fence so you can rip the straighter lengths into posts or planks if needed
  7. Forestry maybe, but I dont think site clearance prior to construction is!
  8. If you are registered for the CIS scheme they'll deduct 20%, if not they'll take 30% of the labour. They should take the cost of fuel, materials, plant hire and VAT off your invoice and make the deduction off whats left. Just make sure you get the receipt for the deduction so you can set the deduction off against any tax due at the end of the year. If you'd rather keep the cash just overstate the cost of the materials etc!
  9. I'd put good money on that being the tip of the iceberg in certain parts of the country.
  10. Last week when the french police were leaving the scene of the terrorists flat they had raided, the local crowd were jeering at them. I understand it to be a muslim community so there appears to be a degree of support for the terrorists killed in the flat. I see where TCD is coming from.
  11. If your using ton builders bags they wont let much air through the wood so it will stay wet with a tarp over the top. It'll go mouldy in no time. You can make a cheap log store using the 3' x 6' pallets from builders yards. Stand two back to back with a length of fencing wire between them as far apart as you want the store to be deep. Add as many pairs of pallets to the side as you want. Close the ends off with more pallets and wire them in place. Chuck your logs over the top finishing the level of the logs with a slight fall. Put your tarp over the top but dont cover too much of the sides so the air can move through the pile. When you undo the wire on a pallet to get at the logs dont let it go or the far side will fall out.
  12. Its a million to one that anyone could pass a competence assessment without any training. What is often overlooked is that the training doesnt have to be formal, documented and paid for courses. It can be peer to peer or self study. Follow that with a proper competance assessment and it about as good as you can reasonably get. As far as unassessed training goes, its potentially a waste of time and can put some people in real danger! When I did my windblown course there was a guy who really didnt understand winching forces yet he walked away with a piece of paper saying he'd been trained. He wasnt on the subsequent assessment so maybe he'd already taken himself out:ohmy:
  13. But training on its own is no guarantee of competence, only independant assessment can verify competence hence lots of employers asking for proof of competence rather than proof of training.
  14. There will be 1000's using their own workshop for business use without notifying the authorities. If you're not likely to be causing a regular nuisance and upsetting neighbours, then just get on with it. Dont know where you are but small rural businesses in Wales currently have 100% rate exemption so its not like you're taking cash out of the council coffers if you have a similar exemption.
  15. As above- keep it simple. Dont forget a good crash helmet too. Depending on the type of trees you'll be practicing on you may want a throwline if lowest branches are high up. If the trees are congested along the stems you may want to add a pruning saw to your kit??
  16. That might depend on the fire?? Clearveiw say to stick it on the steelwork above the doors so it will be measuring the temp of the door airwash air.
  17. For training, Phil Dunford at Clocaenog is very good- Help With Trees | Chainsaw Training
  18. But you'll always need more than just a vent to a cold water tank.
  19. Interesting. Did you qualify for RHI with the log boiler in service?
  20. Isnt the excess heat normally dumped via a gravity loop to a hot water tank or big rad? The vent to the tank in the loft is if things go pear shaped big time!!
  21. We've been running a clearveiw 750 for the last 12 years and theres no corrosion, no buckling and the only significant blemish is where I part melted a trainer on the top! Its just about due for new rope on one of the doors so pretty durable. I dont think you need to worry about the life of clearveiw stuff
  22. Loads of outfits keep your card info for on going payments- car insrance, house insurance, paypal. I dont think keeping the details would be illegal or there wouldnt be so many outfits holding onto them?? If you are worried about it, I'm sure you could ask them to delete the details once payment has been taken although for the likes of paypal you couldnt use the service if they deleted your details!!
  23. The "health and safety crank"would be the HSE enforcing the law relative to LOLER regs. The "moron" would be every employer that doesnt want to go to jail IF a piece of untested kit fails and kills or seriously injures someone.
  24. As above for fabric kit like harness, rope, slings etc. Unlimited time for metallic kit. Everything can fail sooner if worn or not working properly.
