  1. Anyone do any rec climbing in the gatwick or Crawley areas? Are there any good trees or accessible woods to climb? I'm working down that neck of the woods and looking for some decent climbs to kill time on!
  2. Great splitters but you need to know how to use them or it will end in tears. If you employ somone to process the wood dont let them use it!!! Just keep the bulk of the log to the right of the cone and that will stop logs flipping over and belting/trapping your hand. Like anything connected to a running PTO dont get caught in it and if its being used for work it all needs to be fully guarded unless you want to meet theHSE in court!!!!
  3. Google "Dunsley neutraliser". These units are used to hook up multiple heat sources ie wood stove and boiler. I'm not sure if they work with a combi. If you want guidance on how to set up your heating system then check out "The green Building Forum"
  4. A heads up for all those using karabiners, especially if you're lax on regular checks- see attached HSE alert!! FALL ARREST FAILURE CARABINER.doc
  5. In the past I've hired the 18/100 and its hard work with the chute height. BUT its that high for a reason! Google "infeed chute on gravity wood chipper" which will link to an HSE document that explains why the Timberwolf chute is so high. The 18/100 that I hired wont do anything like 100mm branches without stalling unless you're chipping balsa wood! It also regularly blocked up when doing leylandii! I've an old Cramer HS 450 which is 18HP/100mm capacity and its far more able that the 18/100 but the chute height is too low so I have to be choosy over who uses it!!!
  6. You dont need to spend a penny on your web site if you can be bothered to do the reasearch on SEO. Do a google search for "bearded dragon breeder" and you'll get hadesdragons as the top result worldwide. My lad created the site and did the optimisation- hes a biology graduate so he isnt IT trained!!!!
  7. Put a felling notch in the tree with a bow saw under the cover of darkness? Obviously in the direction of the rich guys land!
  8. I have a hycrack splitter on a DB880 and cant fault it- if you use it properly! The golden rule is ALWAYS load the log on the right side of the table and split pieces off from the left- the log cant spin then as the splitter just forces the ring harder onto the table. I hope it goes without saying not to wear loose clothes(i use snug gloves and bare arms) and not to touch the shaft or cone while its spinning.
  9. Thanks for the comments. I guess they'll just have to wait and see if it picks up over time after a bit of a hair cut.
  10. Went to see a half dead willow recently thats got fresh shoots on most of the limbs of 3" or bigger, but all the tips of the tree have died off. The trees on a bank held up by a retaining wall and the wall was repaired two years ago. When the wall repair was done a a section of ground about 6 foot from the tree was dug out while the wall was rebuilt. I assumed that the roots in this area were severed. Since the work the tree has struggled to come into leaf and is now dead at the extremities Looking at the area that was excavated I reckon at least 25% of the roots will have been removed- could this have caused the branch ends to die off? If the dead ends are removed is the tree likely to recover as the roots regrow? As the customer desparately wants to keep the tree, any advice on the possible cause and remedy would be very welcome
  11. I did the windblown/CS34 with Phil Dunford near to Clocaenog forest. He had access to heaps of windblow around the Brenig reservoir and was a great trainer. Contact him through Chainsaw Training with Phil Dunford : Welcome to Phil's Chainsaw Training Website
  12. I dont think they are a legal requirement, but like everything safety related you should do a risk assessment to support NOT using them. The risk assessment would have to record that the slower cutting speed would lead to longer cut times giving increased exposure to HAVS and general fatigue. As others have said, if the saw is maintained and operated correctly theres no need for low kick back chains. I think they are recomended for training so they are a bit more forgiving if mistakes are made.
  13. When I did the 32, the instructor said that the 33 didnt involve anything more than the 32 and wasnt worth doing considering the difficulty in getting suitable trees. Is that what you found now you've done the 33?
  14. Does anyone know the weights of various types of chipped wood per cubic meter? I'm after the weight of chipped leylandii at the moment but it would be good to have figures for others if they vary much.
  15. Probably quite low on the hips if your down the pub, but if you dont want to slip out of it if you invert in a tree then definitely have the belt tightened up above the hips. Same for all harnesses without shoulder straps.
  16. I dont think whats said above is strictly true!! Theres no legal obligation for anyone to have public liability insurance- it may be part of your contractual terms, but its not law. If you dont have it, and are not covered by someone elses, then you will have to pay for any damage or injury caused by you BUT only if you have been negligent. If you dont have anyone working for you that you control then you dont need employers liability. If the outfit you work for control what and when you do then they legally need employers liability. If you dont work under there control then they dont need employers liability. See this HSE leaflet for more info http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/hse40.pdf
  17. Hi Dave. Saw your posting for ground work in Manchester. What sort of rate are you offering and which side of manchester is the work- I'm at the Chester end of the M56. I could probably squeeze in the next couple of weeks if you are still looking. You can call/txt on 07737 756694. Phil.

  18. your 341 will be fine- you just need to get a 15" bar and chain for it as thats the max allowed for cS30/31. I used an 038 with 15" bar and it was fine.
  19. Cant quite be sure from your pictures, but is the carb a double barrell unit? It looks like its two carbs in one casting? If it is then I guess its got two separate chokes and two separate sets of jets? Either of them could be blocked/not working which could upset the single cylinder. Some of the previous posts have said it wont be a carb problem cos its a single carb/barrell shared by both cylinders, but that doesnt look to be the case?
  20. On top of the CS30/31 gear the only extra gear we used were two hi lift wedges but the instructor provided these:thumbup: Good luk
