1. Hi Andymacp, I have just started the long process of obtaining a bat licence to undertake commercial/domestic surveys. Join your local bat group and log all your bat hours, for example roosts visited with the bat groups licence holder dates etc. When you have gained enough experience ( this could take 18 months or more) and have a good knowledge of ecology of bats they will sign you off and deem you competent.... there is a thread on here about this subject so have a scout around. Hope this helps, J.
2. Good vid but I think the sound is was F#**ed on my computer !
3. So what is the max diameter you would use a step cut ?
4. I did ask him and answer was under cut it then chase it through..... just wan to know what you guys would have done.
5. Hi all, I was working with a bloke the other day pollarding a willow. We could free fall all timber as no targets below the tree. The lad doing the climbing was felling very large sections well over 12 -14 inch diam and lengths some about 15 to 20ft and very near horizontal. He was just putting an under cut in then a top cut quickly through the branch. Some fell fine and only a few barbered chaired. My question is should or would a bore cut or a snap cut have been the best option or another method. Thanks in advance. ps The bloke I was working with has many years experience and imo was not in any danger at all, Me being fairly new to this just wanted to know if another cut would have been more appropriate.
6. Can any one recommend any sprays to help with a woolly Aphid infestation on a customers apple trees ? Thanks in advance, Jay.
7. Just wanted to know what friction cord diameter should you use on 11.7mm rope? IS 9-10MM ok. Cheers.
8.
Hello Pete, Thanks for your reply on the chipper 15 23. I bought this a few months ago the serial no is 5201 its done 227 hrs . What is the cost of a service and change one of the wheel bearings ? I only live 10 miles from the factory. Many thanks Jason.

9. Can anyone help. Yesterday turned up at a job to find that one of the wheels on my chipper was smoking and very hot. The compensator rod was bent so I guess this is what applied the brake . Also the draw bar brake hitch was and still is jammed fully in and has no movement at all. I have slackened the brake cables off so the wheels run freely but as said the hitch is solid . I can and have towed this back to the yard but does any one know the best way to free it off ?. Does any one know if they have a lock on them to stop it moving when reversing so as not to apply the brake ??? . Cheers J.
10. As people have said set you price and stick with it. Let them crack on you are a tree surgeon and have overheads.
11. acupuncture , had this for well over a year two sessions of acupuncture from a retired doctor I did some work for and after about 2 weeks it settled down. I now have golfers elbow ..... and am hoping to do some more work for him !
12. Can any one point me in the right direction please... I am trying to buy some ally plank to build a chipbox but cant find a supplier. I have tried the internet and only found people who would build me a box but not supply me with the material. Cheers.
13. ok I am going to build a chip box for my truck but not sure what is the best options. Was thinking of making a frame out of aluminium angle and 3mm ally plate hinged in three places on the side and two removable tie bars front and rear that could be used to secure ladders to.... Or should I make the front and two sides out of marine plywood on a steel frame and paint it,? At the moment it has a stock top on should I get a load handler and leave it at that maybe make something for the cab roof to put tools in when full of chip? Your thoughts, suggestions and any photos would be greatly appreciated.
14. The fine was only £350 could have been a lot more... the trees were roadside and we don't have a chipbox on the mog. The owner does honestly as do i believe he has done no wrong. I wasn't asking other owners to say yes I am using red when I shouldn't I am just curios who believes they are legal when they might not be. The irony of it is that the two gents were looking for a farm when they saw us and decided to have a closer look but both of them didn't know the law on this vehicle.
15. A couple of weeks ago me and my mate were doing some dead wooding at a school. A car pulled up and asked who the unimog belonged to . The mog is taxed as agriculture spec and is displayed on the tax disc . It is also fitted with a crane and timber grab. The gentlemen were from HRMC and dipped the tank... yes it was running on red . Two hours later and a lot of phone calls they said they were unsure if we are legal or not and they would be in touch. Yesterday they came to the owners address and told him that if he did not pay a fine the vehicle would be impounded. They stated in a letter that although it was a grey area they believed that the vehicle should run on normal diesel because we do not work in forestry. We are both certificated tree surgeons and some times do do forestry work but on this occasion as stated were doing arboriculture work. We where told that we should have changed the diesel and the filters ie red for forestry white for arboriculture. My question is how many of you think we have done nothing wrong and are doing the same.... your thoughts please.
