  1. Not forgetting that weed is actually illegal, so doing anything illegal at work surely can't be deemed as professionally acceptable. I have nothing against people that choose to do it in their own time though, I tried it a few times in my teens but it never appealed to me.
  2. Everything mentioned already. Use your initiative when you have done your job to do whatever else needs doing. Don't be afraid to ask for advice, get stuck in, enjoy it Good luck!
  3. Stein everytime for me, I find the Petzls don't adjust small enough for my head.
  4. I think the danger with building the postage into the prices is that it can mean you would pay a lot for postage if you buy multiple items. The free postage over £75 is a good idea IMO as it encourages people to buy more items but not get stung for delivery. I think if people are buying little bits and pieces then they should expect to have a bit of P&P added on at the end, thats just online shopping.
  5. Cool Got the grey one at the show and to anyone thinking about it, get one, they are really nice quality! Sizing is pretty realistic/spot on as well ... none of this your a medium so you'll want an XL stuff. May get the red one soon if funds allow.
  6. Cool thanks guys ... Can't wait to hopefully be given the chance to go out there ASAP. Mark see PM
  7. Would'nt call that pruning it looks like its half way through a take down Given the size of it and the location I'd be very interested to know if it does have a TPO on it. ...as for the worker, well is it not the definition of the sort of people that are wrecking the industry and creating our accident statistics. Was a lovely tree, customer must be a complete tool. Shocking all round
  8. Cool thanks for the response guys . As I say the mention of money from me was'nt intended as a 'how rich will I be' question, just wanted to know how comfortable I'd be, could I afford to eat properly, get a car, rent etc etc. But you have answered my question so thank you Been looking on a website called nzflatmates where you can contact people about flat sharing before you even go out there, this is what I would do at first as I appreciate taking a flat/house on on your own would definately be a struggle ... plus what better way to start off your social life out there.
  9. So how would you compare NZ to the UK in this respect? More comfortable or even tighter on cash? Not going out there for money aspects but it is nice to try to get an idea of how it would be financially as a tree surgeon out there.
  10. Its seems to be that way haha and it is true that by having an opinion it means you'll never agree with everyone, but that doesn't mean theres a personal dislike between the parties. Glad to hear it thanks bud
  11. Cheers Same for me on another thread about the ladders haha. I always fear that forum debate can be taken the wrong way though sometimes. Nothing I say on here is ever meant as malicious, even when expressing a totally opposite view point. This would be clear face to face probably in the form of banter but is not always obvious online. I come on here to learn from people I respect and to mix with industry professionals, sometimes comparing opinions. Tony I apologise if my first post came across as arrogant, it was not meant as such and I think it is cool how many people are interested to discuss this subject
  12. Fully aware of that mate Climbing is a relatively new thing for me (about 19 monthes at college and in work). I've been working landscaping/tree work for the last 5 years though so I know the difference between college and work. I've grounded for some great climbers some using ladders and some not.
  13. Not getting this real world reference idea ... so people that ascend 200ft+ redwoods without ladders are not in the real world Ok a lot of people use them in this 'real world' for the obvious benefits they have, I get that. It's a personal choice rather than 'people that don't use ladders are not in the real world'.
  14. !!! Sod that! Can't get my head around how they are allowed to free it climb in todays world of H&S though. Albere ... no need for that ladder nonsense they should have just body thrusted ...*runs away*
  15. I'm clearly not in the real world then ... You'd never use a ladder in competition, college or when doing a ticket because they are seen as bad practice in a red tape sense. Not saying this is why I don't use them, I know we all do things (inc me) that by the book are deemed as bad practice. Not knocking people for using ladders, it's your choice. Just saying personally I feel no need for them. 20-30ft street trees, again why is throwlining (or even rope throwing on that size) going to take more than a few mins to get a line in. I also agree with skyhuck on the professional image thing. BUT as I say clearly some people have the complete opposite opinion to me, so lets conclude ladder use as marmite ... but I think we knew that already
  16. Baffles me as to the amount of people that have such strong opinions on climate change. In short how can you have a thought out logical opinion on the subject unless your a scientist that knows all the ins and outs. Ideas are put in peoples head constantly through media and then people believe it. My view on it: I don't understand it enough because I am a tree surgeon not a climate scientist so I honestly don't have a clue. We may as well be discussing in depth rocket science really, none of us really know what were talking about so it's just people clashing their opinions and some knowing slightly more than others. ...Honest enough and truthful post guys?
  17. Do you mean relative to the UK or just in comparison to how NZ has been in the past? I'm in the early stages of applying for a job with Asplundh so it's useful for me to gain as much info on life out there as I can.
  18. Thats where fitness comes into play! I just don't see the point in the hassle of a ladder to gain 15ft on say an 80ft tree for example. If its a big tree your going to pace yourself anyway so whats an extra 15ft and if its a small tree just use your lungs for an extra minute. Bigger ladder you might say but then your making things dangerous. Groundies first job should be unloading the tools/warming saws and climbers getting into the tree IMO. Decent breakfast, loads of energy, climb from ground ... no ladder nonsense :001_tt2: Only time for a ladder in my mind is if your working next to a target such as a greenhouse where theres high chance a throwbag could damage something. My opinion only though so please don't take offense if you disagree!
  19. Recreational tree climbing Weight training Running Alto saxophone Student antics Horse riding Used to be heavily into kickboxing, rowing and cycling but found its not possible to do all of them.
  20. I don't dare comment about actual rigging techniques with all the knowledge on arbtalk so I'll just sit back and learn . Probably common sense but my small input would be when handling a lowering rope ALWAYS wear gloves no matter how small a piece ... nothing says pain like a rope whipping through your hands.
  21. Kinda set myself up for that did'nt I  Talk about shooting yourself in the foot
  22. Yep I am mate are you?
  23. This will probably get moved to the employment section bud. But good luck!
  24. Tshirt/sun cream ... Snow jacket/hat on standby for next week ....... got to love english weather!
