  2. joys of doing logs - one broken splitter! Reckon who ever welded it together sooooooo couldnt weld as it popped right off. or i could blame jojam for tough logs and my wimpy splitter!!!!! i didnt weld together - an ebay purchase last year
  3. i have a 340 also for doing firewood, been using it for 9 years now to do 40 tons or so a year. Often at twice bar and amazingly its still going - just keep really sharp and all is good. Did also look at a 357 but price scared me off until the 340 goes bang and stops playing.
  4. big vote for the stihl fs480 - got one at work and its soooo nice, goes through whatevers in front of it. Does like fuel though, just over a litre every 30 mins flat out.
  5. yikes thats a lot of money stuck there in new ones and spare chains. I was using one last year and a link broke off, dissapeared into the undergrowth never to be seen again, no people or other workers around so all ok. We replaced the chains and kept going, spent a lot of hrs using it. Kinda hope they can come back into use in a safer form cause they were great for clearing small re gen scyamore and gorse.
  6. makita, even their 18v cordless one is amazing so the mains powered should be awesome.
  7. Yew trees are quite hardy things, couple of photos below to show how hard we have done them with a perfect recovery. Definetly would do sunny side first, leave it 3-5 years at least then do the other side to allow for max regrowth on sunny side first.
  8. good hitchlock, good wheelclamp as miniumum. then a locking wheel nut on each wheel. Also a huge chain concreted into ground with steel rods driven deep into ground beneath it, round drawbar and mega nice padlock.
  9. they can be a lil fun when a chain breaks off - sure heads off down the woods at some speed! Broke one last year, so we bought two more, lovely things
  10. sure gets the heart rate up, hrs of dull splitting then bang - flying missiles
  11. dont grease the slide on mine, but probably should. one handed operation is much better, although still have to watch for really knotty lumps flying when they split, furthest i have had some lumps go so far is about 8 foot - brushed past my arm on way, still have a scar! went out with one hell of a bang
  12. and heres where i look silly for amount i took with me - left most in landy though. husky 340 with new chain on, plus spare new chain husky 351 with new chain on, plus spare new chain 2 combi cans of fuel/oil felling lever 2 wedges first aid kit and whistle tool kit for saws paper towels, hand wipes, spare tops waterproofs and spare saw gloves tons of food and water, also coffee
  13. sounds like one i have, and local digger contractor guy and son have 3, and friend has 1. Seems to be coping just fine at work so far, and been washed to clean the mud/dust off a few times now. never tried the jcb one so cant compare.
  14. stihl fs480 is a lovely machine, loves fuel though - flat out empties its tank in 30 mins
  15. my stress is sooooooooo tiny in comparison to others! wish there was a cure for working in a place where the guys spend literally every living moment trying to shaft each other and stab in back - its unreal! Have to admit currently i am going with i turn up, do a job and at end of month get some money in bank. Its survival. we are told in 4 weeks it will be better when we get a new head gardener/combine 2 estates into one...................wait and see. For those who like reading, just google national trust for scotland and redundancies to see what last year has been like. All i can say is waking up to posty having delivered a letter on a sat am saying you are at risk of redundancy without any warning sucks. now deal with issues day to day, some worth caring about, some not!
  16. got one too, nice for the money
  17. i have marine ply which is then sealed with bitumen type paint underneath. endless coats of cresote on top then chequer plate with edges sealed.
  18. Hey All, Looking for some spare parts for a honda g400 engine - know its a long shot since its an old engine but hoping somebody has one lurking. I require a complete pull start mechanism, ie the entire unit just unbolted from engine. Dont care if rope is gone, rotten etc its all the working parts i am looking for. Could be tempted by a complete engine if its working also. Willing to pay/donate to forum etc, obviously carriage as well. Hope somebody can help please - mine is sick. Cheers David
  19. we have a fs480 using one of those chain flail type heads or the 4 line jet cut nylon. Best is 35 mins per tank of fuel! Boss sure complains at 10 litres of fuel a day but omg can you clear a serious area with it
  20. well done
  21. seeif my above post appears this time, wonder what i didnt press last night for it to appear - me and technology never mix!!!
  22. have my pairs from clarks, soooo lovely and they have been tested out for couple days already in our deluxe winter weather. Sooo lovely in fact gf getting a pair also. Can i say best ever customer service i have had from yvonne at clarks - truly great! Be able to say how much i love the cut and climb jacket end of next week when one my size (fat bugger) comes in - the one i have here sure does look nice though. Once again Yvonne demonstrating amazing customer care. David
  23. Soooo many choices..... Starting to look like down to three really, the stein - clark one - or go into town and get whatever goretex one the outdoor places have on offer. All seem to be roughly in same price range so just makes tougher. Cheers for sooo many ideas folks
  24. I also got one off ebay, although 2nd hand. Couple of minor niggles that were my fault for not checking machine over properly but thats life! Its running a 400cc honda engine and a massive ram, its huge diamater. first photo shows what was like when i bought from ebay and shiny new painted one is how it is now, not best photo. will post a better one next time its out (forgot yesterday) basically if you can lift the stick onto machine, it will split it. edit to add, i got a peice of angle iron welded onto either side of the blade to split the logs wider sooner, just not shown on those photos.
  25. when i went for my 30/31 i was offered the chance to rent from the training provider some all rounds, but my work didnt want to since would have cost the same almost as buying a new pair which they did. However i truly hate wearing my all rounds that work provide and cant wait for them to die off - so for on my own time i bought frontals only, so much nicer. So may be worth seeing if training provider will rent you a pair for course. Congrats on the 30
