  1. yeah its some cut back, end of a several year long run of them we did. havent got any photos of the first one we did, but its totally regrown and it was done in 2000. Its Crathes Castle near banchory, worked there for about 13 and quarter years now. Theres some more photos of during - and yeah the scaffold is dubious...........joys of boss knows best! these show some of the other stages of the job, several different hedges. The yew is incredibly hard stuff, knocked edge off chain soooooo quick.
  2. we have done some huge hedge restorations at work on yew and had amazing results. All cut back to main stem and allowed to flush away. see attached photos for size of job. The bottom pic shows after 2-4 years of growth, the timber edging was where the hedge was out to, in the top one it was right out to grass edge.
  3. many many years of back pain on and off, then an ambulance job when it got so bad one night at home, took a ton of drugs literally. went to a physio who spotted my problem in 5 mins, my right leg is 4+cm shorter than left leg, so i was always leaning over, compressed the sciatic nerves in my back=mega pain. I now get all my boots with a 4cm raise on the soles, 99% perfect, no more pain. just some minor discomfort from long day at work. well worth getting a good physio
  4. cant help with price etc but thought i would say hi to another aberdeenshire member - where abouts are you? I am out in banchory. davie
  5. well done to you also, feels good dont it
  6. yep am pleased with it. wasnt too sure how i would do since i always get sooo nervous at assesement time and make an oops. lots of tickets i still want/need, things like pole pruner and chainsaw from mewp along with windblow so heres hoping work feels generous Davie
  7. soooo happy i passed my cs 32 today. fun lil drive to it yesterday - 174 miles! took more fun route home so 189 miles today. Scenery nice in glencoe though. Roll on windblow when i can persuade work to do a course Davie
  8. just got the samsung b2100 on an orange contract, rated the same as landrover phone just orange were too miserable to offer me it - tesco however had some very tempting contract offers still on orange all with landrover phone. only had 3 days so cant comment yet really, seems ok though.
  9. got a garmin nuvi sat nav which is very cool cause it stops me getting lost - i love it and some husky functional saw trousers which i yet to try out and my bro paid for some of the makita leaf blower i bought myself as a early xmas gift. oh and ate entirely too much!
  10. I once got burgaled, was out at the time so couldnt catch them but when i came home and saw the front door open first thing i did was retrieve the club hammer from back of landy and come have a look see! Cops were kinda ok about it, just pointed out had i lamped somebody with it it then the blow should have been tiny so as not to kill them!!! Fair point really but i truly doubt i would have managed to contain myself to one tiny lil tap. Thankfully the miserable scum didnt take anything of value or trash the place bar the brick through window. now my trailer and log splitter are chained up to death and insured, and theres more security on way for trailer over xmas just in case.
  11. good advice on the get experience, i take every single chance i can to work with our estate forester, even if its just logging up felled trees into firewood its good to learn about compression/tension since none of our area is on flat ground its always fun. year or so ago we were felling some dead elms and discussing trapped saws, forester said he didnt often jam saw - next cut guess what!!!! trees do the total unexpected. got a good photo someplace of one of my bosses who had just done windblow course so decided only he could take down a tree and then crosscut, all i could do was drag brash - photo says all - he rushed and saw stuck! so experience counts for everything - even small trees bite back
  12. definetly changed up here, frost hasnt lifted for the last two days and tonights properly cold! Glad i filled log shed right to door in summer.
  13. just praying i dont get same for cs 32 or i am soooo failed! could use somewhere with like a hundred trees to fell all using the boring in from both sides/holding cut at rear (without having to sned/crosscut/stack/tidy brash cause i am too unfit) just to get the cuts to line up piss perfect from either side, best i can do is about a 2-10mm difference in level and thats not good enough, mind u i have only felled 4 trees in prep for exam so that dont help.
  14. worst part i found was the maintence assesment for cs 30 - examiner was real fussy on chain, measured every single tooth for exact size and angle, i had to re do in assesement cause he found 1 tooth to be a different length, took over an hr to get perfect! Oh and chucking on a new chain doesnt work, when measured the teeth length isnt perfectly the same so you have to sharpen/measure anyway. got some god awful trees on cs 31 assesement which had decay in them and entirely no room to drop into, but since instructor had been fussy on training part it wasnt too bad really. Definetly go slow, think before every move. lol now if i can only pass my cs 32 when i do it in jan!!!!!
  15. havent got one yet with the x lites on the roof, but heres a couple from the landy show at peterbourgh in september this year.
  16. We have two older guys who work at a different estate to me and they both have WF - its truly horrible! one cant feel anything at all in his fingers and the other has a lil, but has to do things like picking up his grandkids over a bed so when he drops them they are ok - cause he just cant control his fingers properly now. Both used saws all their days, strimmers etc. Their advice is simple, if any doubt at all over vibration level on a machine, get it checked - repaired or in the skip!! Its much better to spend a lil more on kit but have working hands left when you hit 50+
  17. yew is fun stuff to cut back, the dead sticks are like cutting steel. we done a load of this where i work and it sure knocked the edge off chains. photos show some during, and the size of hedges we did. All brash dragged out and burnt.
  18. yet another photo i should try to post up, but got a 2003 90. best mods i have done in no real order, heated front screen - heated seat kit - x lites on roof bar - front winch - 2 inch lift and bfg mud terrains. The heated screen and heated seats are soooooooooo good in this weather!
  19. think portly sums it up best - am only 5 ft 8 so height aint a problem, just getting a pair that goes past large legs is a hassle. was the same getting waterproof trousers but finally got there with berghaus goretex ones - lovely!!
  20. went and looked at stihl ones tonight - pity the dealer didnt have any my size - aka bloudy large!!!!!! so he's going to order some in so i can try them, and also the husky dealer ordering in some of their technical ones so i can try. Stihl dealer seemed here way expensive so going to be looking online as well. Cheers for all your help guys.
  21. sounds like i should avoid the oregon ones then. Took 18 hrs nearly for my current ones to dry out for the next days course, entirely noo fun putting on the wet ones.
  22. Hi all, new member here with an old ? but could use your expertise! I currently have some oregon type c trousers, but they are heavy, hot and too bulky for me to get waterproofs over. Have been tempted by the stihl advance or hiflex ones, both class A as i dont climb, also got shown some oregon ones that are supposedly waterproof. What does everyone think - i dont wear them everyday so wont get trashed too quick i hope! so dont mind spending that bit more for ultra nice ones Thanks everyone Davie
