  1. Can we change the rules to the 1000th post wins? Only if that is reached before Ians epic Rope wrench thread:001_tt2:
  2. Like it. Nice one for taking the time & effort to talk people round to that sort of work in an urban area. Hope they get you in for future management works on the tree.

    A good Arborist

Try starting with a one day a week course at a collage near you. Maybe RFS cert arb to begin with to gain a basic understanding for bio,p&d ect, then AA tec & so on if you find yourself going well with it all. Best of luck. A great start already buy the way you sound & are thinking:thumbup1:
  4. Nice job. Do you know the age of them roughly? What bats have been recorded in or around them if any?
  5. As little as poss. Lanyard & anything else I need I will ask a ground bod to put on my line as & when.
  6. On the larger pin, as you can see in Rich Rule pic their is a ring for attaching a bit of cord or hoop through a crab for safe keeping I guess. Question is dose anyone have it tethered to something while its in the WR so if taking out during a climb for a change over it doesn't accidentally get away from you mid crown? dropped mine the other day fumbling about (found it) but an embarrassing butter fingers moment...
  7. Yea that may be the only option at the mo. I can't see anything that would do the same job on any arb equipment sites as yet, but I will keep looking too.
  8. Your right. I posted that about 3 or so posts before yours. cheers for pointing out anyway Just read some of the other posts & it dose seem that a malion would do the trick. I'm thinking that it may have to be a fair large one to get the same bend radius properties as the ring in Ians set up (not sure on the dimensions) Any thoughts on this please?
  9. Hey Ian, I used it in my TIP today & found out while messing about with different set ups that side loading of the crab can become an issue in some situations, so looks like ring set up & PITA now & then is the way to go for now. Cheers for the info about strops & connectors as back up too.
  10. Like the set up Ian. Would putting a revolver crab in instead of the ring work quicker? I'm thinking bend radius with the revolver, & cant remember if it's a 3 way locking crab as this will be used for TIP. Can you see any prob's with this as once in the tree I am not a fan of base tie off too from reading a previous post (yours I think) which made alot of scene to me.
  11. You are right that the LJ itself will not allow free fall but human error i.e panic & a desire to hold onto it will result in a rapid decent until brain has engaged in the LET GO! response which to many climbers new to climbing or this device may forget in some situations. I speak from seeing this happen 1st hand when I lent mine to a novice climber who was doing fine until the final decent at which point she decided to hold on tight for some reason despite my shouts of LET GO! & my running toward her to give her something soft to land on & save my LJ from being damaged:sneaky2: It all ended well with some jokes & her not wishing to have another go on it. I climbed with a LJ for 3 years or so but when I had a play with the HC & found it almost the same I sacked off the LJ for most climbs. Buy a HC, you won't regret it.
  12. Nice vid & tunes again Marc. Liked the stabilizing at around 4:40ish. Keep em coming mate, enjoyable watches.
  13. No person in the sky for me (or wherever it's supposed to be) I believe in me & the things in nature I see, hear, feel (spiritually too), smell & touch. Each to their own:001_smile:
  14. Looks like a good job to my eye. Looks like you got a nice target pruning cut on the lower larger branch from your foto. A top first attempt:thumbup1:

    Axes?

The one with the steel shank is made by stihl & is also a splitting maul.
  16. Got some time on the job yesterday to have a play with the WR. Nothing special tree wise but enough to give it a good run, twin stemmed sycamore with some rigging. So I set my line with throw line as usual then tied off at the base with a wrap & a running bowline. I found the assent on spikes easier than normal as every pull on my line took up all the slack I pulled through. I found limb walks almost the same as with my DRT apart from concentrating on putting more weight on my legs & a little more balance on returns as the mechanical advantage of DRT is lost, but this was not a problem as return seemed quicker as again all the slack tended again felt quicker & less effort due to other parts of my body working to compensate less dependence on the ropes mec advantage to haul in. I went back to DRT for the block down for some reason as I was not thinking & didn't see that I could have set a better system for decent with a running bowline & stopper knot instead of my usual method. (not sure if that is the correct way though, I will have to skim through the vast thread to see how others do this) I look foreword to monday & what the day mite bring so I can have another go on the RW again. Hopefully a reduction so I can see what a proper climb without spikes is like. I enjoyed my first proper climb on an SRT system. Cheers Kevin & all that have posted & opened my mind to try a new thing:thumbup:
  17. Nice vid marc. music went well with it. Looked like an enjoyable climb with mr Q. What camera have you got for your tree vid's?
  18. Cheers nepia, must work on my computer skills.. Did you check out the key of awesome's version after?
  19. Rubbish news Nod. Hope you get back up soon mate. Will keep an ear & eye out on my travels. As Mark said any one who buys moody stuff is just as bad imo!
  20. Ok, youtube 5 people one guitar, somebody I.....then check out The key of awesome version. Sorry not computer sav enough for links & that. Just thought I would share as I laughed lots.
  21. Well put Rupe. I have not given it a fair crack yet (time to play & time to work don't coincide to well) but the points you make are ones I have thought of too. When I am seeing the light too I will post. I'm sure that all these fellas can shine some upon these points.
  22. How do people go about making Birch sap wine & what are your tapping methods? I tend to go with a sharp knife incision with a tap whittled from a small piece of birch about small finger diameter that allows the run to fall into the container below. Then I push the bark back into place. Not the quickest form of retrieval though.
  23. Walnut 17/2/12. Oxford. One was pouring out & another 10m away was dry as still.
  24. Tell him to p*ss of & get a proper budget for what should be proper rope access tec support info & equipment. Cheeky get is what I read!
  25. I noticed on one of the vid's posted that the pantin is worn alot higher on the ankle than in some others. What sort of advantage dose this have? I am new to srt & have found that placing the pantin central to my mid sole requires me to move my foot downward to allow rope feed in the early stages of assent. Two different points of foot set up alignment, just wondering before I give it a hit & miss go.
