    The one on the right looks more like an overhand loop, is it dressed and set properly? When I was on a hitch, I used a basic valdotain, just wraps no braids, unlike the VT. Start at the bottom, wrap up 4/5times then clip back in. 4 holds me and I'm just over 13 stone. The cord needs to be as short as possible though, this prevents any collapsing when ascending and means next to zero sitback:thumbup1:

    For the basics, the AA's Guide is good. Though it doesn't answer your question entirely, you'll probably find more info on Arbtalk than any book can hold. Have a look through the climbing forum or use the search function if you've got specific questions that need answering. Good luck with the courses

    Don't think the Giles is in the Bailgate conservation area. I'm not an expert though, I only speak from experience with job sheets etc! Good on you waiting for confirmation, theres a few about who'd have it out and run with the cash

    A fair bit of Lincoln is conservation area, if its anywhere near Birchwood or Bailgate/top of town I'd make sure you know for certain before doing any work.

    Have you given much time to a LJ/WR combo? Its what I use every day now. Once you get it set right, its not dissimilar to using a LJ on DdRT. The slack self tends nicely, and you can adjust it upwards with one hand, just pull your rope upwards from between the wrench and LJ, creating a bight, and as you release, the rope will fall through the LJ, holding you perfectly where you've set it. No bending to one side, and no need for a little descent to engage the wrench. I've also found its easy to pull the rope from the top of the LJ, as i would ona limb walk, the wrench stays engaged the whole time, so once you let go, the system is ready to rumble! Give it a try, took me a month or so to get used to it, but I can't see myself changing to a VT anytime soon

    I didn't see you until the last minute today, I was driving the Waveney van near Newton Flotman. There may be a rec climb at Hatfield forest this weekend if you're up for it?

    I've played drums for about 13 years, multiple bands and recordings. For a brief time, it was my sole source of income. Haven't had the time to play in bands for the last couple of years, but I'm now back on the horse, looking for new people to play with. How about an Arbtalk band? We could do the theme tune for steve's axe throwing comps!!!

    Fishermans and barrel knot. I don't use a hitchclimber anymore, but I would have used the top eye, with a short tied valdotain, just wraps, no braids, to keep the krab away from the top of the hitch

    I wasn't referring to your post, I think people like that are despicable. My post was more aimed at the older members who seemed to take this thread as an "in my day" younger generation bashing chance and let rip. They aren't all bad and it isn't proportional representation you see. The press only tell you of the bad ones, you only see the bad ones on the street during the day, as most are at college, work etc, and for those same reasons, you only see the bad ones in the street at night.

    All of you older chaps blaming the young 'uns, whos generation were they raised by? As a relatively young person myself, it's exceedingly irritating that older generations have one big tar brush and paint the kettle black and all that. As has been said, there are bad eggs in every generation and always has been.

    I've got two from two grillons, they're a waste of space and reduce your useable lanyard length. I wouldn't bother if I were you but you can have one of mine if you want it.

    Got a few in the pipeline, whereabouts are you based in the south east? If you know of anywhere usually most landowners are cool if you explain the intention, and that no damage or cutting will occur. Public woodland you can usually get away with if you stay a bit away from the footpaths

    Don't think there much you can do if its a big spill. A colleague threw a hi lift at a spray can five years ago and it too went off like a rocket, my gear looks the same today as the day it happened

    Probably, but I'd imagine it would be like climbing srt if you tended both at the same time. I occasionally used to use a hitchclimber with a prussik on the standing end of the rope. It meant I had the hitchclimber set up for in the tree stuff, and the prussik to cover long distances without slack building up.

    Hi Nick, heard the show earlier, good work! Is it acceptable to climb srt with a ropewrench for the comps? I found this on the 3ATC website, just wanted a little clarification as to whether my system was allowed; 2.2.30 Contestants may work from a static ascending line provided that a separate, approved overhead climbing system is anchored to the static ascending line. Fall-protection anchoring systems must include an approved stopper knot or hitch on the static line below the anchoring system. Techniques for working from a static line with an anchoring system attached to the static line must be demonstrated prior to use and during gear inspection, and must have prior approval of the Head Judge & Safety Officer .
