  1. Kev you missed out driveways and tarmacing Looks good, Nice and tidy!
  2. well done Rob, i start my crossover modules next week for going onto the 3rd year Top up. Its a good feeling finishing one year, and twice as good second time round! Good on you for an overall distinction aswell!
  3. I hugged it so it made the tree fairies happy before we cut it down! Do you have any more Ed?
  4. I use both xtc and poison ivy, love both ropes. Poison ivy feels the same thickness but is a lot lighter!
  5. It looks like he forgot to stop while walking to take a picture!
  6. The fields are use by horses and a paddock in regular use which already had a part of another tree fall into last week. There is a path used by the landowner and other people right under it. Well it was going to be a few metre stick as we would have climbed it but decided just to fell it. Left a nice little habitat pile at the base instead. They were happy!
  7. Had this today to kill, original plan was to leave habitat stick but plan changed to a fell. Was down by 12.30 took a lot of thinking and planning. I was hanging on a pull line while Ed (armchairarborist) did the very sketchy fell. Would have videod it but there was only us 2 on site. Was a very messy tree! Let's hope Ed puts his share of the pics on here too! Pics are in no real order.
  8. Gaff guards can be bought from our well known suppliers. I've had a couple of sets.
  9. I'm happy with my gelert. Had that nearly a year and it's just dirty, still looks good and gets thrown round too. My silver bull one had stitching come out but sorted it with a zip tie and it's still useable as a rucksack
  10. Cheers andy, got some bits lined up where it should come in handy so will have a review up in the next week or so! what fingers?
  11. I can agree with the above, there is nothing better than formal training. But having some knowledge of techniques before a short course would only increase the trainings effectiveness. Having people local willing to show you the basics is invaluable and can help clear up queries or insecurities.
  12. Your best selling that other harness and buying a tree climbing one. If you have an understanding of how to climb you can understand how a climber feels and can help him when he has long days up a tree. I've got a job coming up where you can feel free to come along. Its in a prime location so I'd expect more than one spectator!
  13. To get the use from my 660 it lives with a 20"bar. Brilliant. Did a couple days site clearance, all willow and the odd syccie, was flying through. Forearms were burning at the end of the day! I do plan to change the sprocket to make it run quicker and change the standard exhaust for the dual port muffler.
  14. Do you have any other kit than spikes? Buying them on their own without knowledge on how to use them is a bit of a waste! I am local to you, If we get some nice weather and a free day, I could introduce you to a few things climbing wise.
  15. Not a tree but still important New 'fat boy' mug. Holds 960ml. About 4 average cups of tea!
  16. Why a crane on such a little sapling? BIG tree that. Would take me a week to do that!
  17. Haha indeed! Maybe I need a new avatar? Fingers are much better. Slight ache on my index finger as it's the knuckle when moving. But got full use of both fingers again.
  18. Need a guy tomorrow to give me a hand on a job ive got to finish, was originally the weekend but now it has to be tomorrow for reasons out of the blue. Not much work, only an hour or two in the morning Anybody able? let me know 07841128366
  19. Found this on eBay, I'm sure others have seen it while searching for 'arborist'! Good little glossary, has pretty much anything you'll need to know in the way of terminology.
  20. I would love to fell it straight, but there is more air than wood at the base. Even to get a pulling line to drag it over. Seemed stable enough when in was watching it move in the wind, seems brittle compared to the ones next to it, although that might need managing soon.
  21. That's the (very sketchy) plan. I was thinking of anchoring to the larger neighbour and then work this one. Most of it can come out in one big piece, plenning to reduce to around where the wound begins at the top, or just below the first crotch. Can't decide yet.
  22. Very hollow sycamore. I've got the job of creating a monolith out of it. From the limited pictures I could get, it's a limb tearout and then I would suspect a lightning strike to have formed a hollow like this, there is very little wood left! I'm surprised it's got a fully vital crown and is still standing! Trees around it aren't in great condition, this one is priority so far. It creaks and you can see either side moving and closing together in the wind, it was bloody terrifying trying to have a look up close in gusty winds.
  23. I do think silkys are more dangerous than chainsaws. Saws you will respect and be more careful, why would you have your hand 1-2cm frm a chain spinning at 15m/s? But you have your hand next to a silky which is just as sharp and cuts wood justnas well, with them being sharper, the injuries are clean and can easily be deep cuts. Saws tear flesh, cuts may not be as deep though! It's better already. I'll be cutting again on weds!
  24. Notch and drop tree services Catchy names, although make you stand out, are too gimmicky. KISS! Keep it simple stupid!
