  1. Had my first injury where I've had to stop today, reducing an oak, on my way back up after lunch. 2/3 of it done, cutting and holding one branch, over a conservatory. So it was all like that, branch starts to fall so I keep hold while I finish the cut, don't know how, but my new sharp sugoi found my left index and middle finger. Few seconds and realised what happened, thought about carrying on, then came the blood! Instant change to self rescue, luckily I was low down so took less than a minute to be on the ground and being dealt with, tap on the wall so washed with that, sat down and had arm held up in the air, one guy was first aider and customer had a huge bag of first aid gear, I had one with me but only the little stein ones, not good for an injury like this. The shock hit me as I sat down and was close to passing out, had some paracetamol and lucozade to bring me back to normal and they helped. Got myself bandaged up and then other guys packed kit away, I helped where I could. I feel bad because I've left a job half done and had to finish early! But number one is most important! Didn't get any pics of the injury, will do in a day or two once the bandages are off. Went to the walk in centre and they just put some steri strips on my middle finger as that was deeper, index was on the knuckle and had already closed so just cleaned and bandaged. Out of action for a couple of days, should be ok by weds I hope. Picture of the tree, customer is already happy with how it is, loads of light now, been a bit harder than I liked on the far left hand side, could only tell on the ground! Whoopsie daisy! Stay safe guys!
  2. If you can get over to burscough there is either ramages on the high street who sell husky and all manner of garden stuff and hardware. Or t&h power who are a stihl dealer on the industrial estate. I go there for all my saw stuff and are a good group of guys, will advise you well on what's a good choice. You won't go wrong with the strummer for sale here, I think we've got one actually. Plenty power and reliable enough, hardly had maintenance since we bought it.
  3. I do listen, I take it all on board. I get you, it would have had a fair amount of depreciation by now anyway, plus I think it's all paid for, I would probably guarantee that actually. So it's only running it that costs. Ive had thoughts of taking a foot off th box height, perfectly feasible and wouldn't take too much room off me. We run a grit spreader in winter which fits on this and that was used hard and had a knock against a bollard they tie container ships to, the bollard won! The truck ended up with a passenger door that wouldn't open properly and a battered wheel arch behind the front tyre.
  4. You could always look at this thread http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/trading-place/29210-having-clearout.html
  5. It's all constructive criticism. It works for me, I would love to buy something else but I can't afford to. I'm keeping my little citroen for now as its only costing fuel which is £45 a week. Yes I do agree it might be a bit high but it can always be shortened if needs be, that wouldn't take more than half a day to knock a foot or two off it. The truck has been a midway between personal and work all it's life. Had a few bashes and stuff, a bit of sap and dirt won't do it any harm. I like it's head turning ability. Free advertising as I'm driving down the road. 18 stoner: all in all the whole setup on the truck has cost about £230, I would have loved the ldv, but money isnt on my side, as much as I'm working for it to be, and we had this truck here so why not utilise that? Comments are appreciated, my horoscope did say to not take anything to heart about my achievements, how weird is that! I'll make it work until I can afford something better suited. I've still got another year at myerscough son for now cheap and cheerful will do me, this time next year I'll look into changing vehicles and build up properly. It's taken me a year to get how I am now, would have preferred to keep my hilux and build onto that as that would have been better, but that had to be sold to fund a new d22 engine.
  6. That's another way to look at it. Considering they are harmless, they did say it's been a part of a nature lesson but they are unsure of it's risks. I'll mentionnthat nothing needs to be done, just leave them be and maybe pu a sign up about it
  7. Sure? Theres a good chance we will have to be seen doing something as it's on school grounds. It looks like the damage has been done so they will start to pupate and fly to their next meal within the next week by the looks of it. I'll do a bit of reading
  8. Use the imageshack app and get the licks and copy them in or use the tapatalk app which you have to pay for but IMO makes it easier to view here on the iPhone
  9. There is loads. The small cut tree was done over in 2 days. Then they moved onto the next two trees nearby, both sorbus, and they are both decimated. They flew about 100 yards to another tree on site and that's gone and there's one theyve started on another. There is a little field maple that they seemed to have a go at but has minor damage and no signs of more being done. We've got an idea which chemical to use so it will be dealt with soon Cheers fellas
  10. It does look it but it hardly affects drivability. It's a good height for shovelling out too
  11. Signed up today. Pleased with this now!
  12. But I'd rather pay the £40 to make my job easier!
  13. Got called out to look at these. Few rowan species I believe, covered in silk and associated caterpillars, three at the front of the school then another two at the back. Any ideas what they are? My first instinct is silk ermine moth or elephant hawk moth from what I've seen in previous threads but this could be a different species. What's the best way to control/eradicate these? If it's an insecticide, should this be applied at a weekend to avoid contact with people when it's 'fresh'?
  14. i am very happy with the meindly airstreams, bought them to replace my uncomfy haix blue ridge and have never looked back, brilliant boots, plus they match my truck and jacket!
  15. you do only need a driving licence to drive a quad but lantra have brought in ATV training to improve safety as there tends to be a few accidents on them on farms! i did my pa2a on the quads we had at the time, just get your calculations right and your fine!
  16. i use jungle formula, but i dont attract them, people around me get attacked but i rarely get bitten. I do when its heaving with the blighters, but theres nowhere around here thats that bad! Is it not worth dosing up on anti-histamines to stop your body reacting to the bites? if you dont let your body react then you wont notice them as much.
  17. Thats a good report, very informative. However, as k.deusta is a but rotter, would it not have shown a better perspective of the trees structural integrity by having the picus a lot lower, at 200mm or even 100mm from the base? Ive seen a failed ash that had k. deusta all in the base, and a picus at 800mm wouldnt have picked up anything to condemn the tree, but one at 300mm would have had it down yesterday
  18. I understand that completely I am trying to usher towards a removal, without trying to strike fear into him, as thats never the aim, he did ask whats the worst case scenario, which is failure. I did say its not in a dangerous stage where failure is imminent (but we dont know without getting a cross section from the base!), but the risk is increased because of the fungi present. He is confident in my judgement and although reluctant to accept it may have to come out, it looks like its the only option. Thank you Gerrit, your opinion has cleared a lot up for me
  19. Very informative thank you. Is there any way to increase the longevity of this tree? Heavy reductions will do as much good as bad IMO. And having targets like these is getting close to being a fell. Although the client wants the tree kept if possible. Im unsure whether he will get what he wants and that I would sleep at night afterwards!
  20. Hi Gerrit Sorry to repost, I thought I would save hijacking the k-k-kretz thread completely from matt I went back to visit the tree, more fruiting bodies, i can confirm, the circled areas in previous pictures ARE mature fruiting bodies, and i found a few more with a larger amount of white/grey telemorphic stages (if thats right) of the fungus. had a bit of a dig, noticed an old wound at the base which may have been the site of initial infection? There are also some tips that are without leaf, as mentioned earlier this would indicate a restriction/blockage of the cambium. Something tells me that his neighbour will be lonely in the coming month or two. I'm going to speak to the council and arrange a meeting with the tree officer to discuss this tree and what they want to do. I would assume, in light of finding more than I thought was there, they would maybe lean towards removal because of targets. Secondly, the photo showing the lower stem, there are lots of bulges and lumps all over the lower 2m of stem, do these have any relation to kretz? Sorry for some blurred pics, couldnt see my phone properly when i took the photo! Your replies are much appreciated
  21. Had the last few models on contracts. Currently paying £20/m for iPhone with unlimited texts, roaming package, 1gb data usage per month and 600 mins. Not a bad deal! Kev: I bought an otter box from eBay as you mentioned. £18, bargain. Their website says it DOESN'T work with White iPhone as they have relocated the light sensor a bit. Your phone will think it's living in a box! I don't doubt a new iPhone in the next few months. I think it will be august when it comes out. There are usually strong rumors around now and possibly word from apple.
  22. every time i see this thread title i think poor duck! haha Looks good that, needs some head detail and it will look real cool! paint it ducky colours too
  23. very intriguing, i think its ace being able to tell a story about a fungus, knowing how it works, what it causes and how its dealt with. I like to tell customers about phantom honey fungus that eats all their grass then will eventually get them if they stand in the garden long eonugh
  24. I got stuff right woohoo Sorry to hijack your thread RangerMatt, but its not being derailed completely! I went back to visit the tree, more fruiting bodies, i can confirm, the circled areas in previous pictures ARE mature fruiting bodies, and i found a few more with a larger amount of white/grey telemorphic stages (if thats right) of our little friend. had a bit of a dig, noticed an old wound at the base which may have been the site of initial infection? There are also some tips that are without leaf, as mentioned earlier this would indicate a restriction/blockage of the cambium. Something tells me that his neighbour will be lonely in the coming month or two. Sorry for some blurred pics, couldnt see my phone properly when i took the photo!
  25. Use your hands to push stuff and not your face then! Well a new mesh visor is about the same as a clear or smoked one. But a mesh one may last a lot longer.
