  1. Don't let this post die, i think the input from everyone has been really interesting, id still like to know what the tree sp is, and peoples views on getting rid, cost that is, any advance on my estimate of height / size ?
  2. I think that nice old lady has been TUGGING YOUR TOGGER wool over eyes also springs to mind, give your TO a ring before you invest anything in the job.
  3. Should have also said looking at the age of the newer flats, that tree is almost certainly going to be TPO'd, i would be very surprised if when those new houses were built that that tree was not a material consideration in 5837
  4. Hey come on now, im having no goes at anyone or calling names, i have over the years priced a lot from photos only, from doing that i have learned, some times the hard way, that trees look a lot smaller on a photo, how to look around a photo to use items that i know the size of as a measuring tool, angles at which photos are taken, the first few photos the tree looks not so large, then look at the last bottom photo and then consider the angle it was taken, also look into the far distance at the heavily reduced trees as the one you are looking at at the bottom of that very narrow restricted access garden is possibly the size that they once were. Then i also look at what a bottom ring would be like to man lift all the way to the front of the house, 10" sliced ring will be a 2 man long carry up hill lift out, and so on.
  5. I think people are well underestimating the size of the tree, and how long it will safely take to rig down, £1600, maybe a little more, and that would not include stump grinding, look at the size of the bins as a comparison for stem diameter and height, 21m ? dont forget those photos are taken some distance away and look slightly down on the tree from an upstairs window , its not a prize in my eyes to see how cheaply the job can be done its how about how well the job can be done, and i see quite a bit of rigging in that job. 2 days
  6. All great stuff Paul, fantastic phots and living account of life
  7. yOU KNOW, my glasses are not as good as they used to be, i have scwinted long and hard at this one, i am still going Fraxinus sp, with Pseudomonas syringae ssp. savastanoi pv.
  8. That was one of the things for me.
  9. OOOW Mulberry, now thats a think about, but isn't it far to tall ? I like P. orientalis and i like A. x carnea, F. ornus i think was the one i was thinking of. One thing for sure, its a beautiful tree, lucky owner, hope it never gets reduced.
  10. Fraxinus ? but which sp, i do recall seeing one once which looked very similar from a distance.
  11. Tom could be on it, mr Blair seems a little on the low side especially with not knowing how much of a cleanup, Dan even sounds fair, very fair, i think total for me given the history and knowing the cost of an eyebrow shape, £350 sounds very fair to me and with an insight as he was warned of the problem.
  12. We are all awesome, but do you sums, those old rates most folk put up with are not really in keeping with what we should really be charging today, take a good look at what things cost, then consider what you charge. Its nothing for me to spend £45 on an eyebrow shape, takes about 10 minutes , spray tan £50 again 15 mins, i'm not shallow but i do like to look after my self, but in reality, in monterey terms, the arb industry is dinosauric. I do pay those rates, no one complains, and i still make money. Top climber is and i hate to say it, dont know if ONLY, is the word, as good as the man on the ground. Anything other than a straight dismantle a climber can be greatly assisted by a knowledgeable groundy, he can also ensure good flow of the job and is often responsible for tasks being completed on time and to price .
  13. Should of also said, at the end of the day, you all know your own value, just stick to it how ever much it is, just stating how i value your help.
  14. Bang on, thats how really in this day and age it should be, the climber is as you say your tool, the best groundy you can pouch , steel , obtain is your second, not sure if i spelt pouch correctly , ?? a well grafted smooth running team is fantastic , if you have to spend 400 a day to make 500 a day , is that a bad thing ? thats complying with all uk ledg, we can all cut corners if we choose, but why , lets just do things how they should be done, not subsidised, and not cutting corners , we all know what things cost, how much is a spray tan ? how much is a pint ? some where the worth of qualified tree folk has been well and truly lost, but not with me. The client will pay.
  15. And a good, really good groundy is worth every penny .
  16. Id say , correction, i pay £150 a day thats if they are self employed, thats for a top groundy, or an ok climber , whats very important is a great understanding of wood, how it grows , tension wood, how it responds when cut, rigging, time management , safety, see where i am going ???
  17. Would also say, i have run Carltons and Predators, both have been unreliable and would never have reached the places my little Jo Beau would,700 Reds are the secret.
  18. Did it not sell then, ? mines in its own league, as i think all the Jo Beau stuff tends to fall into , once you've accessed the places others can not, word does soon get around, i charge around 5 to 6 an " and get it, maybe a bit more the top end clients dont ask how much. Its not out every day but when it out is its SMOKINGLY GOOOOOD. in a monetary way. Long live Jo Beau
  19. Looks like when it was very young someone took a hatchet to it. Striking downwards.
  20. Sorry not read all the posts, my take on it. If its got Amenity Value, have a quite chat with you TO, just ask for his opinion, if hes worth hes salt he wont cause you any problems, if its out of view just do the checks and take it down, dont loose any sleep about it.
  21. Little stat for you Jon, Rattus norvegicus is the most successful mammal on the planet after humans, only trouble is my ratter Jack disagrees .
