  1. Just always contact you local T O BEFORE cutting any trees, you would be amazed at what can be protected, even tiny trees . After a while you will build a good relationship with your T O and have a good understanding of your local area.
  2. Are you reading all this Tom,
  3. Hi Jon, i am now running pest control along with my other services, but as a proper concern. Did the Lantra , got fully insured , joined npta , with firearms cert, shotgun cert as well, and covered for ratting dogs, and all rodenticides nice to get paid for something you enjoy, interesting to see if i make any money at it this year.
  4. To save on legs, if you can chip in someones rear garden and leave them the wood chip in a neat dumpy bag, smaller ones than normal, you are providing a service a little different to others, and if the ground is wet there is less foot damage to lawns, there is less raking to do as you haven't dragged half the garden across the lawn, down the passageway and then blown it into your truck and all over there drive, saves a lot of time, i have one simple set up that goes on a Jo Beau m500 and i dont know if anyone can remember the old purpose made Entec bagging hopper ? well i have one and it fits straight onto a TW190 and works perfectly , just sprayed it TW orange, the bags i use are smaller than the traditional dumpy bag but made of the same material, bags can be reused or i sell them back to the client, for a small profit, full of woodchip
  5. Level 4 qualification Arb officer ? , thats a little over qualified for the UK, are you sure that in Spain it would really trump you up, if its anything to go by in this country its more to do with in house politics as to who gets those jobs, more line management shuffle, rather than some hapless council office worker loose there job by cutbacks in a worthless department , don't they just ask them to , whats the term ? ... consider becoming an arb officer why don't you.
  6. I run Dolmars now 3 saws got them new from Germany , all the 7900 does is get dumped, buried into stumps, the base of trees, all the time, starts every second pull, first choke out then its away, then dumped into a stump, the places no one really wants to put a saw, so i really rate them. Far better than a 66, for some reason my old Stihl was not as good.
  7. Should have said, the age of the estate is the age of the tree, take that number off 65, whats left is the balance of its life, dont loose any sleep.
  8. No its only superficial , like pealing sun burnt skin, but scares the stem. its only my take on it, and dont worry, Birch are not long living trees, pioneer species , grow fast , short life, a tree of that size would be mature, i would worry less about its bark, but more about how in a built up environment its maintained, best to leave alone, don't like to be reduced. 65 years thats it, firewood.
  9. Kids or a kid with an almost tourettes like habit has been peeling the bark over a number of years.
  10. I have to say, having run lots of different machinery, part of my fleet of kit now consists of a Jo beau m500 and Jo Beau B31-110 , great bits of kit, thanks Dean.
  11. Looked a good post:thumbup1: but i only got as far as " make and enforce " ... in this industry no one enforces anything. Should i have read more ?
  12. Be brave, go with what you think will work, you only have one crack at life, fortune favors the brave, i have never looked back on anything i have put thought into all things, and it looks like you have really considered everything. I can still remember my first nudge, i would of been happy to spend the rest of my life as a groundy , unskilled, for the rest of my life, working for Jason ,top man,he had to leave the country, and as i have family in the uk that meant i had to stay. i worked things out, like you are doing and never looked back, good luck. Should of said, i did then enroll at collage to gain confidence and ended up at university after six years, never looked back.
  13. Was it AA guidance note 5 from memory ? Good paper if its the one i remember, but would it not be better just to argue that the tree is dying. The vast majority seem to be.
  14. All great posts, just one query, wouldn't shade from a False Acacia be classed as Dappled shade ? just picking things apart.
  15. Yerr course i am, i just get a little frustrated sometimes. It is a very skillful job that we all do and you never stop learning, but it is a shame that Arboriculture is an industry that can so easily be exploited by those people who have little regard for trees, the law, taxes and the people they peddle money off. Good luck in your return to the UK, I think you will see a big change for the worse from when you were last here. Besides the poor standard of work set by those folk topping trees and tarmacing drives, the crime rate has reached a record high, in the last few weeks break ins both houses next to me, and on a number of other farms close by, police know who it is and the site is only a few miles away, i have seen his facebook and he also trades in tree topping , fencing , chainsaws and anything else he can lay his hands on. Sorry for the derail, good luck
  16. Should of said in the first sentence .....are you ok... Barbados ... to live in ...........the uk ......wtf, idiot .
  17. Should of also said, PPE, as long as you turn up in a wife beater vest, brylcream, and shell suite you be fine boy No one ever asks
  18. Hi, you don't need any certs to do the job in the uk, if i was to advice anything please try and at least obtain PL insurance, as long as you get that i see no problems for you. As much as the uk tries to comply with all eu regs and set the standards we are rubbish at what we do regarding policing what we try to preach. I know of LA contractors with very little qualifications so enjoy and exploit as much as you can.
  19. Gray git, and Mountain man, your both on it, the money to be made with quick turnover is on the £150 mark jobs all day long, and just cram them in to the day, give me domestic all day long over any commercial job.
  20. In Fact saying the above , and looking at the photos again, it looks to be on a few trees, and they are very poor specimens, could be a reasonable recommendation to fell and replant with a different species. They are not very old.
  21. I surveyed one with it a few years ago on Red Horse Chestnut, my recommendation was to monitor , and i agree with what you have said, but saying that whats the Target area value ? mine was Low risk it does weaken the tree but often the trees have compact crowns especially if its on Aesculus x carnea, my tree was taken down a few years later for other reasons , its difficult to predict how long they can go on, any secondary problems , fungal presents?
  22. The more i have researched into this... something is not right. Your best man to represent you would be Dave Dowson from tree life 01162606939
  23. Being a Local Authority contractor, even for 60 years , in no way qualifies you to survey trees at a professional level, the relationship between P C's and contractors over long periods of time always provokes questions with me, as a former P C myself, i raised insurance (PI) and qualification questions regarding contractors in my area and queried why the same contractors were unqualified and under insured and still always getting the work. I think you should ask for details of the Surveyors qualifications and request a copy of his Professional Indemnity Insurance. See what comes of your enquiries.
